Speeches Delivered at the City-Hall of the City of New-York in the Courts of Oyer and Terminer Common Pleas and General Sessions of the Peace. Second edition with Additions
New York: Printed and Published by Goerge Forman 1812. 140pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Contemporary red quarter roan and marbled boards. binding worn and slightly rubbed but sound text slightly browned else very good. Engraved bookplate. 140pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Much expanded second edition from the first of the same year. Graham's florid summations at trials both civil and criminal involving seduction murder rape grand larceny arson assault counterfeiting etc. - and all in our fair City of New York!. There are some surprises: Graham successfully defends pro bono a Negro girl against charges that she murdered her mistress. On the other hand in his successful defense of a man accused of beating his wife here is the rhetoric of the day: "I myself have always been of the opinion that people of sensibility would endeavour to draw a veil over unfortunate family transactions so as to hide them from the fact of the world. This was the sentiment of the prisoner otherwise he would have exposed her baseness long since . I shall prove to you that the prosecutrix is the most fiery masculine and blood-thirsty of any woman this court or jury ever saw: in short she is a disgrace to her sex . (LINGUET, S.N.H.)
Théorie des loix civiles, ou principes fondamentaux de la société. Tome Premier [- Tome Second.]
A Londres, 1767. 2 volumes. (4), 496 pp.; (4), 528 pp. 8vo. Contemporary marbled calf, spine richly gilt with raised bands, labels with gilt lettering, sprinkled edges, marbled endpapers, some minor defects to joints but a very nice copy. Conlon 67:1044; Einaudi 3420; Goldsmiths 10377; Higgs 4251; INED 2930; Kress 6459. Usually described as the first edition, this probably is the second edition, preceded, in the same year, by an edition set from different type, having a different pagination and collation, and with errata. It still remains a scarce and important book by this predecessor of Marx. The Théorie des Loix civiles is Linguet's Magnum Opus in which he refocused earlier reflections on history, retrospective cultural anthropology, law, political economy, and public administration, and integrated them into a theory of the origins of society, the organization of its institutions and cultural superstructures, and the dynamics and directions of its development. It is a refutation of Montesquieu and the Physiocrats, and one of the major achievements of early socialist thinking. Linguet's book was highly praised by Marx, particularly because of the thesis Linguet developed in the second book, 'On the Origin of Laws.' Linguet wrecked Montesquieu's illusory 'Esprit des Lois' with a single word: the 'esprit des lois is property.' 'Moreover, occupying himself almost entirely with the fate of living people, workers and peasants, and analyzing the mechanism of their condition, Linguet stands much nearer to the modern industrial socialists than to the first French socialist school, and he is one of the few writers before 1789 of whom could be said with good reason that he is more a predecessor of Karl Marx than an ancestor of Fourier or Cabet!' (Lichtenberger, Le Socialisme au XVIIIe siècle, pp. 288-305).In Linguet's perception that economic facts are more important in the life of the individual than political background Linguet was far in advance of any other thinker of his age. When in his Théorie des Loix civiles, perhaps his most important work, he declared that men could not be really free if "they must go upon their knees to a rich man to gain from him permission to increase his wealth," he was crudely foreshadowing the doctrine of surplus value. His fame died before him, but his ideas had an important influence on Karl Marx (see Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences, vol 9, pp. 488-489).

(Louis XVI of France).
Recueil de reglemens pour les corps et communautés d'arts et métiers, commençant au mois de février 1776. Paris, P. G. Simon, 1779.
4to. 287, (1) pp. With fine vignette on title-page and at the head of p. 3. Contemporary full marbled calf, spine attractively gilt, gilt triple-fillets on both covers. All edges red. First and only edition. A collection of official documents relating to Turgot's dissolution of the craft guilds and their partial revival after Turgot's fall as minister of finance. The famous preamble has been recognized as among the most important statements in political economy: here, Turgot declares man's fundamental right to work: "God, by giving to man wants, and making his recourse to work necessary to supply them, has made the right to work the property of every man; and this property is the first, the most sacred and the most imprescriptible of all". It has been noted that this preamble includes arguments against trade corporations similar to those used in the same year by Adam Smith in the tenth chapter of the first book of his "Wealth of Nations". The function of the guilds or jurandes was to maintain the interests of their members by limiting the admission of new members, regulating the length of apprenticeship and the issue of "lettres de maitrises" to those who qualified for membership. Though the system did offer some guarantees of consistent quality, they also prevented free competition and caused increases in prices. In early 1776 Turgot presented his famous six edicts to the King. The first contained the abolishment of the corvees, the second, third, fifth and sixth the suppression of various taxes and tolls. The important fourth edict contains the suppression of the guilds. Turgot's proposals were accepted by the King, but parliament refused their registration, and a lit de justice was necessary which earned Turgot the animosity of many, leading to his dismissal shortly after. - The present volume begins with the text of the fourth edict, the "Édit du Roi, portant suppression des jurandes & communautés de commerce, arts & métiers" of February 1776 (pp. 3-22), with Turgot's famous ten-page preamble. This edict is followed by several other edicts and numerous Arrets du Conseil d'Etat du Roi restoring the old corporations, though in a more liberal sense: the edict of August ordering the establishment of the Six Corps and 44 other corporations, the Lettres-patentes du Roi inviting tenders for supplying the court, the Declaration du Roi ordering the establishment of a Syndic for the free professions, the Declaration du Roi en faveur des artisans du Fauxbourg Saint-Antoine, the edict reforming the corporations in Lyons, the similar edict for the other towns, the Declaration du Roi concerning the pharmacists and chemists, etc. - A fine copy. Not in Kress, Goldsmiths' or Einaudi. OCLC locates 3 copies in U.S. libraries. Coquelin & Guillaumin II, p. 777ff.

(Marx, Karl / Engels, Friedrich).
L'Alliance de la démocratie socialiste et l'Association Internationale des Travailleurs. Rapport et documents publiés par ordre du Congrès Internationale de la Haye. London & Hamburg, A. Darson & Otto Meissner, 1873.
8vo. (4), 137, (1) pp. Original printed wrappers. First edition. From the collection of the French socialist and writer Paschal Grousset (1844-1909) with his autograph note on the title, repeated on the final page: "Ce Rapport est en entier l'ouevre de Karl Marx. Londres, Dec.bre 1874. Paschal Grousset". - In fact, scholarship today agrees that the text of the Conclusion was jointly edited by Marx and Engels in July 1873, to serve as the final chapter to this brochure which Engels and Lafargue produced according to a resolution at the Congress of the Hague. On the 26th of July 1873, Engels wrote to Sorge: "Lafargue et moi l'avons écrit ensemble, seule la conclusion est de Marx et de moi". - The Corsican-born Grousset was elected a member of the Paris Commune, serving on its Executive Committee and as Delegate for External Affairs. Deported to New Caledonia in 1872, he escaped via Australia, the U.S., and Britain, and it was during this period of exile that he penned the quoted lines in the present volume. Grousset returned to France after the 1880 amnesty and became a sometime collaborator of Jules Verne, as well as a Socialist Deputy for the 12th arrondissement of Paris. - Paper brittle and chipped in places, the printed wrapper more so; spine professionally repaired. Extremely rare. Rubel 726. Stammhammer I, 3.
