[Charles VII].
Frankfurt, Johann David Jung, 1742-1743.
Folio (230 x 360 mm). 3 parts in one vol. (100), 306, 80, (2), 38, (4), 96, (10), 28 pp. (20), 128, 52, (2), 26, (2), 34, (2), 30 pp. (4), 20, 8, (2), 10, (2), 26, (48) pp. All 3 titel pages printed in red and black. With an engraved frontispiece, 19 engr. portraits, 18 engraved plates (some folding), 2 engr. plans and 17 headpieces (8 woodcuts, 9 engraved). Contemporary vellum with giltstamped spine title. Wants ties. A complete copy of the most sumptuous of all imperial coronation diaries ever produced: the splendidly illustrated account of the coronation of Elector Charles Albert of Bavaria as Roman Emperor Charles VII on 12 February 1742, and of his wife Maria Amalia of Austria as Empress. Notably, Charles was the only person not born of the House of Habsburg to become emperor in over three centuries; it was only his early death in 1745 that once more cleared the way for Franz Stephan of Lorraine and the Habsburg succession through his wife Maria Theresa. - The large folding plates (after Lentzner, Funck, Lippold, Diehl and others) depict the coronation ceremony, entrances, the banquet, other celebrations on the square before the Römer, soldiers, wagons, structures erected for the pageant, the illumination etc., as well as the portraits of the Imperial couple and of the prince-electors. The notice to the bookbinder with the list of plates at the end of vol. 3 comprises only the plates in parts 2 and 3. - An extensive and important source, not least by virtue of its numerous supplements such as the long lists of guests to be entertained, providing hundreds of names, offices of the various retainers and large entourage, even giving the names of the cooks, bakers, and cellarers. "In questo assai grosso volume di circa mille pagine sono compresi tutti gli atti pubblici precedenti e susseguenti l'Incoronazione e l'Elezione. Cominciano le tavole col frontespizio, seguono 15 ritratti, e 18 grandi tavole intagliate [...] con molta e dispendiosa cura" (Cicognara). - From the collection of Karl Bacher with his fine, coloured bookplate on the pastedown. 1832 ownership of "Johannes Lang" on the verso of the frontispiece. Binding rubbed; some warping to vellum edges. Some light fingerstaining but largely unbrowned; upper corner of the flyleaf clipped. - Very rarely encountered complete as thus. Provenance: from the estate of the Frankfurt lawyer Wilhelm A. Schaaf (1929-2015), a specialist in economic, commercial and insolvency law. Lipperheide Sba 28. Kat. der Ornamentstichslg. Berlin 2898. Cicognara 1510. Kat. Sauer 259. Not in Ruggieri.

[China].
[Military Formations According to the Five Stars and the Crescent]. Beijing, Imperial Workshop, ca 1850.
20 x 9½ inches. Bound in star-patterned paper-covered stiff-boards. 5 double-pages, with hand-held woodblock printing (often over 60 per page), hand-coloured highlights. The album depicts military formations and drills. Cavalry, and infantry divisions are seen in various offensive and defensive positions. The illustrations include soldiers carrying rifles, spears and banners. The album contains formations 6 to 9, according to the hand-written labels affixed to the bottom of each illustration. It is complete thus: presumably, formations 1 to 5 would have been contained in another album. "Piling-up Array" is a form of assembling troops where lines upon lines of troops are "piled up". This formation is clearly depicted in the many illustrations. The hand-written text (on red paper labels on each page) reads as follows: The Sixth is Piling-up Array. The sentinels of the two posts on the back left follow the end of the lines. The mounted soldiers charge. The Seventh is Piling-up Array. The sentinels of the two posts on the back left follow the end of the mounted lines. The middle sentinel withdraws and then charges at the enemy. The mounted soldiers retreat. The Eighth is Piling-up Array (made of 2 drawings). The formation turns into 2 dragon lines. The Ninth Gather to the 5 posts. Kneel down for the order to fire. - Minor restorations. Overall in very good condition

Vintage photographic print. , [circa 1959]
356 x 279 mm. Rare shot from the camera of Perfecto Romero, the photographer of the Cuban Revolution, who signed and dated "1959" on the verso. The subject of the photograph is Camilo Cienfuegos (1932-1959), hero of the revolution who was presumed dead only months later when his small plane mysteriously disappeared on a night flight. The verso also has a note from the Museo de la Revolucion, which thanks Rosa Maria Medel, the daughter of the Cuban-American singer Rosita Fornés, for this image: "A usted, por sos valores profesionales, patrioticos, eticos y por su firmeza como digna representante de un pueblo que jamàs ha claudicado / Museo de la Revolución / Octobre - 31 - 1998". - Slightly creased and with a few edge flaws; one larger tear on the left edge rebacked.

[CIVIL AND CANON LAW].
Methodus utriusque juris.
Cologne: colophon: Johann Koelhoff the Elder 1481. 18th-century gold-tooled beige calf with red and green labels lettered in gold on the spine gold-tooled board edges red edges marbled endpapers. Folio. With an anonymous engraved portrait in a sprinkled frame on the verso of the second flyleaf the whole rubricated in red. First incunable edition of the Methodus utriusque iuris emerged from one of the most enterprising presses of the late 15th century that of Johann Koelhoff the Elder active ca. 1471-1487 died 1493.Koelhoff was not originally a printer. Born in Lübeck he began his career as a merchant trading in cattle grain wool and paper a commercial background that would later shape his success in the book trade. By 1471 he had established a printing house in Cologne likely after learning the craft in Venice possibly in the workshop of Wendelin von Speyer active in Venice 1468 to 1477. The clear rotunda type he favoured along with other technical features suggests a Venetian influence carried north to the Rhineland. His press produced over 125 known editions primarily Latin theological and philosophical works though from 1475 onwards he also printed legal texts intended for university use. This Methodus utriusque iuris belongs precisely to that academic world. It served as a methodological guide and lexical aid for the study of the two laws: civil law Roman law rooted in the Corpus Juris Civilis of Justinianus I and canon law. Cologne home to the influential University of Cologne was a centre for the study of the ius commune and works such as this were essential tools for students and jurists alike. With an ownership label mounted on the front pastedown reading Ex libris Van Vaernewyck of Albert-Philippe-Charles Vicomte de Vaernewyck 1762-1841 his library was sold at auction in Mechelen in July 1847. Contemporary manuscript annotations to the recto and verso of the final leaf including references such as Digesti Veteris. [CIVIL RIGHTS] [LAW] GRAY, Fred
Bus Ride to Justice; Changing the System By The System. The Life and Works of Fred Gray
Montgomery Alabama: Black Belt Press 1995. First Edition. Octavo. 22cm. Publisher's gray cloth titled in black to spine. Dustjacket. xvi; 400pp. Light bumping to spine ends and some very light soiling in places in a bright clean dustjacket internally clean a near fine copy. Inscribed by the author to the half title:<br /> "To Walter Burch Keep up the Work Fred W. Gray 4/27/95"<br /> <br /> The Walter Burch in question is almost certainly the man who was originally part of the Greensboro PD and was a witness to and professonal participantin the manner in which the South treated those who defied the shackles and chains of "tradition" and in later life seems to have developed an intense interest and sympathy in the cause. Mr. Burch's LEO history is also possibly the reason for the unusual "keep up the work" inscription rather than the more usual "good work" phrasing; Mr. Gray had more than earned the right to a healthy skepticism but they both would have been men of advanced years at this point. <br /> <br /> Fred Gray was among many other things connected to the African American struggle for Civil Rights a lawyer who worked with MLK Jr. prosecuted on the Tuskegee Syphilis revelations on behalf of men who had been in the program the desegregation of schools in Albama the 1965 Selma March and was the defense lawyer for Rosa Parks in her trial for breaking the segregated seating laws on Montgomery public transport. At just about every major flashpoint in the mid 20th century history of civil rights Fred Gray was present standing up and being counted. Black Belt Press unknown

[Civil War]: [Texas]: [Law]: McGinnis, AD A D
Manuscript Document Involving a Writ of Habeas Corpus in Late-Confederate Texas
March 14 1865. Very good. 2pp. on a folio sheet. Old folds some abrading in the margins minor edge wear. A Confederate Texas legal document in which Judge A.D. McGinnis of the "2nd Judicial District" orders those parties holding William L. Carter to report to court for a hearing on a matter "on a writ of habeas corpus." A month before the end of the Civil War Carter alleges that he was "illegally restrained in his liberty" by Lt. Robert Burton of "Alexander Cowan's Company of the Reserve Corps of Caldwell County of the Confederate States of America." Judge McGinnis states that Carter is now apparently being held by another officer of Cowan's Company and orders that said officer "is hereby commanded to produce the person of said Carter before the district court of said county.and there to show cause why he is held in custody and under restraint." Confederate habeas corpus documents are quite uncommon in the market. March 14 unknown
