[Genoa, Republic].
Leggi nuove della Republica di Genova, con le dichiarationi, e gionte, riposte à suoi luoghi [...]. Genoa, [Antonio Roccatagliata], 1584.
8vo. (16), 214, (2) pp. With woodcut title-vignette. Later half calf over marbled boards with giltstamped spine-label. The first edition to feature the laws of the maritime republic in Italian and Latin parallel text. This pocket-size digest reflects the 1528 constitutional reform as well as the laws implemented after the 1575 civil war, which pitted the wealthy "old" nobility against the rising merchant class, the so-called "new" nobility. In addition to several hundred laws and regulations, the present edition is extraordinarily rich in personal names, listing about 400 delegates of the Consiglio Maggiore, as well as the persons admitted to or excluded from the seminary since 1576. The work was first published in 1576 in Latin and saw an Italian translation by the lawyer Giovanni Paolo Pianta in 1577. This 1584 edition was edited by Gabriello Pelo. - The index, which is usually bound at the end, is placed after the foreword in the present copy. Contemporary ownership with the handwritten initials "B.G." to title-page. A description of the book from a Milanese bookseller's catalogue (dated by hand November 1961) is loosely inserted. Extremities slightly rubbed, paper slightly browned throughout; pp. 3-16 with small traces of worming near upper gutter. Rarely seen at auction. Edit 16, CNCE 20653. Manno, Bibliografia di Genova VI, 25309. BM-STC Italian 295. Manzoni, Bibliografia statutaria e storica italiana I, 211. Fontana II, 20. Bibl. enato III, 289.

[Genoa, Republic].
Statutorum civilium serenissimae reipublicae Januensis. Libri sex [...]. Genua, Giovanni Battista Scionico, 1707.
12mo. (22 [instead of 24]), 723 pp., final blank page. Contemporary full vellum with handwritten spine-title. Rare penultimate edition of the Corpus Iuris of the Republic of Genoa, first published by Franchelli in 1573. Among the principal regulations of the maritime republic comprised in this pocket-size work are monetary and prison laws, such as valuation and the liberation of prisoners on religious festivals like Christmas and Easter, as well as aspects of marital law including the case of the "fugitive wife". Further, it includes a brief history of coinage, intriguingly titled "De origine moneta". The popular handbook saw several re-issues in the 17th and early 18th centuries, the final edition dating from 1710. - Contemporary ownership ("Ex libris ... ") to front pastedown, identified by a later hand as Augustinus Senior (1800-73); earlier ownership on title-page stricken out. Lacks the half-title. A clipping from a sheet of headed stationery of the municipality of Genoa is loosely inserted. A few small marginal flaws. Manno, Bibliografia di Genova VI, 25341. OCLC 249961409.

[Gonzaga, Francesco, cardinal (1444-1483)].
Seal of Francesco Cardinal Gonzaga. No place, ca. 1460s.
113 x 76 mm. Vesica-shaped red wax seal. Stored in a paper box. A cardinal's pointed oval seal of the 'aedicula' type often seen from the mid-15th century onwards: three figures with the Virgin Mary and the Infant Jesus, shown within elaborate Renaissance architecture (a single-compartment aedicula framed by columns; the Gothic screenwork canopies of the earlier Gothic fashion have here been replaced by a classical pediment). The seal corresponds precisely to the specimen preserved in the Upper Austrian Archives, Gleink, Urk. 1467 X 08; No. 14. - Cardinal Francesco Gonzaga served during the reigns of Popes Pius II, Paul II and Sixtus IV. The classical design of his seal ties in with his patronage of the arts and his penchant for collecting antiquities. - Lower point of the seal chipped with some loss to the coat of arms, otherwise well preserved.

[Gorchakov, Mikhail Konstantinovich (ed.)].
Sionskie Protokoly. Paris, Doloi Zlo, 1927.
Small 4to. 63, (1) pp. Original printed wrappers with mounted photogravure. Rare émigré edition of this most notorious of anti-semitic slanders. This edition is particularly remarkable for its direct link to the predominantly Jewish make-up of the new Bolshevik government, as illustrated on the front cover: the mounted photogravure, "taken in 1918 and forbidden in the USSR under threat of execution", shows the "Jewish government in Russia" with Leon Trotsky in the front row. - The text of the 24 'protocols' originates from Nilus's 1911 edition, with the addition of an extensive introduction by the publisher, Duke Mikhail Gorchakov. The 'Protocols' are an antisemitic hoax purporting to describe a Jewish plan for global domination. It was first published in Russia in 1903, later translated into multiple languages, and disseminated internationally in the early part of the 20th century. The text allegedly documents the minutes of a late 19th century meeting of Jewish leaders discussing their goal of global Jewish hegemony by subverting the morals of "gentiles", and by controlling the press and the world's economies. Following the October Revolution, the 'Protocols of Zion' came to be seen in a new light by the Russian right. Viewed through the prism of their anti-semitic beliefs, the predominantly Jewish make-up of the new Bolshevik government appeared to provide material proof of the prophecies that the text had purportedly first revealed. In the 1930s it was proved that the source material for the forged text consisted jointly of the "Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu", an 1864 political satire by Maurice Joly, as well as a chapter from "Biarritz", an 1868 novel by the antisemitic German novelist Hermann Goedsche. - Covers loose. Interior very well preserved. Formerly in the collection of Grigorii Vladimirovich Berezhetskii (d. 1971), a White Army officer. OCLC 215277235.
