Ads 1-3: Rare interesting collection of laws ordinances instructions decrees etc. regarding Dutch navigation and shipping in Holland and in Europe during the Dutch golden age; containing also a treatise on the insurance of ships and cargos by Quintijn Weytsen 1518-1565. The edition of the treatise by Weytsen in our copy is the enlarged edition by Simon van Leeuwen 1626-1682.Ad 4: First edition of an important manual on Dutch maritime law long considered the standard work on the subject. Further editions appeared in 1695 1707 1710 1727 and 1753. Taco van Glins 1619-1673 was a lawyer from Friesland who had studied in Leiden and who became Professor of Law in Franeker in 1673.With some annotations in contemporary handwriting on the blank leaves or in the margin and some underlining throughout the text. ‎8vo (205 x 137 mm). 23 pp., 1 blank p. (after which are bound 20 blank leaves). Contemporary marbled half cloth with giltstamped spine rules and title "Marx, Manif. und Katech". The founding document of communism: a previously unknown copy of the extremely scarce first issue of the first edition, owned by a Rhenish councillor of justice in the 1860s. - Of this first printing, only 27 copies are known worldwide: the 26 enumerated in Kuczynski's census and one more, sold in Hamburg in 2001. So rare is it that Kuczynski's statement, made in 1995, today requires almost no qualification: "In vain will specimens of the first edition of the 'Manifesto' be sought in the world's great libraries. Neither the Library of Congress in Washington nor the Lenin Library in Moscow, neither the British Museum in London nor the Bibliothèque nationale in Paris, not the Vatican's Bibliotheca Apostolica nor Berlin's Staatsbibliothek own a copy. All that is left is held by specialist historical libraries or archives, was acquired in passing with posthumous papers or bought and sold by private collectors" (cf. p. 78). - Previous to this copy, only four examples passed through the international postwar book trade: that formerly in the collection of Salman Schocken (Kuczynski B6c: Hauswedell 211 [1976], lot 574 = Christie's Paris, 2008, lot 12); that of Eduard Wiss (B4-6b: Sotheby's 1986, lot 159 = Christie's 1991, lot 314); the Rehdiger copy (B5b: Sotheby's 2006, lot 93); and a copy unknown to Kuczynski (Hauswedell 356 [2001], lot 428). Excepting the Schocken copy, which was acquired by the British Library, none of these recently-surfaced specimens went to institutional collections, and to this date the BL remains the only major research library in the world that has succeeded in acquiring the much-coveted first edition of what is universally admitted to be "one of the outstanding political documents of all times" (PMM). Even the great Karl Marx exhibition held in 2018 at China's National Museum in Beijing to mark the 200th anniversary of Marx's birth, as well as the Chinese National Library's 2021 exhibition, dedicated specifically to the Communist Manifesto and co-hosted by the CPC's Zhejiang Provincial Committee, were unable to source a copy, although the 2021 exhibition showed no fewer than 306 versions of the book in 55 languages. - Quite insignificantly and evenly browned throughout due to paper stock. Pages 7-10 trimmed fairly closely at the lower edge by the binder's knife, leaving the last line of page 7 slightly shaved (minimal loss but still legible) and descenders of "g" and "z" barely touched on page 8. Minute paper abrasion to the word "aufgehoben" in the last line of page 14; the printed letters transferred to the opposite blank margin. A small browned rectangle in the gutter of pp. 14/15 (ca. 3.5 cm), apparently due to formerly inserted small slip of paper; light offsetting from the original ribbon bookmark on pp. 18/19. Altogether in excellent condition, showing the characteristics of variant B4-6 as called for by Kuczynski: 23 pages, p. 17 numbered correctly, misprint "heraus beschwor" in the last line of p. 6; cover variant undeterminable (but traces of the original green wrapper's colour are evident in the gutter of the title). Tantalizingly, the entirely contemporary binding's spine title reads "Marx, Manif[est] und Katech[ismus]": an uncanny echo of the work's catechetical form as originally envisaged by its authors, before Engels, in November 1847, suggested the word be abandoned in favour of "Manifesto". Is this a mere misreading of the title by the bookbinder - or was he possibly himself a member of the "Bund der Kommunisten" who was acquainted with the genesis of the work and Engels's "Communist Confession of Faith", as the draft version of the Manifesto was called?. - Provenance: from the library of the Elberfeld district court councillor and justice Peter Kremer with his autograph ownership in blue ink to the flyleaf, noting the edition's rarity even then: "Selten. // P. Contains Marx's first political pamphlet, the anonymous "Bemerkungen über die neueste preußische Censurinstruction. Von einem Rheinländer" (in vol. I, p. 56-88). Another anonymous essay, "Luther als Schiedsrichter zwischen Strauß und Feuerbach" (II, 206-208), has also been attributed to Marx, though Feuerbach may also have been the author of this brief piece. - Marx had sent Ruge his manuscript of the "Bemerkungen" from Trier on 10 February 1842 as a submission to the "Deutsche Jahrbücher", asking him for the time being not to reveal the author's identity to anyone save the publisher. Indeed, the essay was not published there, but in Ruge's present collection of "Anekdota", printed in Switzerland and comprising such contributions as either had been not admitted by the Saxon censorship or which he had not even bothered to submit. - Published in January 1843, the "Anekdota" appeared at the very moment when the liberal, democratic-leaning German press was particularly vigorously suppressed. The book struck a sensational blow against the pettily bureaucratic, reactionary censorship in the German countries by unmasking specifically the Prussian and Saxon censors' bias against all progressive scholarship and writing (cf. I. Taubert/W. Schuffenhauer, Marx oder Feuerbach?, in: Beiträge zur Marx-Engels-Forschung [1975], p. 37). - Contemporary Viennese ownership stamp to title page. Contemporary marbled boards. Moses Hess' "Gesellschaftsspiegel" was an influential journal of pre-revolutionary social criticism, counting among its authors Karl Marx and (as a more occasional contributor) Friedrich Engels, as well as Rudolf Matthäi, Hermann Püttmann, Heinrich Bürgers, Friedrich Schnake and Georg Weerth. The present volume, comprising the latter six of the total of twelve issues that appeared, contains what scholars have considered perhaps Marx's most singular publication: an article entitled "Peuchet: vom Selbstmord" (in issue VII, pp. 14-26). Compiled from translated excerpts from Jacques Peuchet’s "Du Suicide et de ses Causes", a chapter from the author's memoirs, this long-neglected Marx piece constitutes "a precious contribution to a richer understanding of the evils of modern bourgeois society, of the suffering that its patriarchal family structure inflicts on women, and of the broad and universal scope of socialism" (Michael Löwy, Unusual Marx, in: Monthly Review 53:10 [2002]). It was Marx's habit to compile such excerpts from other authors in his notebooks, but this is the only example of such a collection being published by himself, during his own lifetime. Curiously, as Löwy has pointed out, the author chosen is neither an economist, nor a historian, nor a philosopher, not even a socialist, but none other than a former head of the French police archives under the Restoration! Also, the excerpted work is not a scientific one, but a loose collection of 'life incidents', anecdotes, and small stories, followed by some comments. Nor does the subject matter of the article belong to what is usually considered the political or economic spheres, but has to do with private life, specifically suicide; the main social issue discussed in this connection is women’s oppression in modern societies. "Each one of these traits is unusual in Marx's bibliography, but in combination, they make this piece unique [...] Marx left his imprint on the text in several ways: by his introduction, by the comments with which he peppered the piece, by his selection of the excerpts, and by the modifications introduced through the translations. And the main reason why the piece can be considered as expressing Marx’s own views is that he introduced no distinction whatsoever between his own comments and the excerpts from Peuchet, so that the whole document appears as a homogeneous piece of writing, signed by Karl Marx" (Löwy). - Occasional insignificant edge flaws or remarginings (without loss to text); binding somewhat bumped at extremeties, but in all a fine survival. ‎Sixteen Letters to John Hall Watson from Spring 1851 Describing Financial “bamboozling†by the Prominent Saunders Family of Lawrence the “free soil stork rising†and Business and Family Matters‎

‎Massachusetts and New York 1851. Sixteen letters totaling fifty-seven pages. Folded else Fine. A collection of sixteen letters written to John Hall Watson 1820–1901 from various family and friends shortly after Watson’s departure for Europe in March or April of 1851. Correspondents are his brother Benjamin Franklin “Frank†Watson 1826–1905; family friends John H. Kimball – and Joshua Foster Burgess 1827–1908; and his wife Elizabeth Merrill Watson 1829–1859.<br /> <br /> Frank Watson’s letters which total ten pages highlight the group. Watson was a prominent attorney in Lawrence Massachusetts was appointed the town’s Postmaster elected City Solicitor published the Democratic newspaper The Lawrence Sentinel and was present as a Major in the 6th Massachusetts Regiment1—the first unit in the Union Army to suffer casualties when they were fired upon by civilians during the 1861 Baltimore riot. At this time however the younger Watson had not yet attained this level of success. Instead he was a trial lawyer working under Daniel Saunders Jr.—son of one of Lawrence’s founders and later the city’s mayor—about whom Watson has numerous complaints:<br /> <br /> “I hardly know what to say to you about my business and prospects – I must confess that it seems to me that even if I remain in the law I had full as well separate from Saunders as to keep with him. He is selfish and grasping and has a powerful notion of his own importance and superiority which is decidedly more apparent to him than to any more distant observer. . I could put up with these things if I was getting a living from this business. It is clear that I am not – there is nominally from 10 to 1500$ coming to me this year but I shall not see $500 of it between this and next January. Daniel is in want of all the money he can get his hands hold of and he takes it without rendering any account therefore on the books and I trust luck to find it out. This is not done for the purpose of cheating me I presume but I have no doubt that it is intentionally done for the purpose of useing the amount without my knowledge so that I may consider myself bound to share everything I receive in. . I am not going to be bamboozled by the Saunders tribe any longer – I am going to have my rights strictly fully and as though they truly belonged to me or I am going to take a stand which will compel him to buy me out or remain in a very uncomfortable situation. . In the first place I am to devote every instant of time between 8 Oclock in the morning until 9 Oclock at night to the office business or else the office will have to be closed as I am of course the only one responsible in the concern.†May 11<br /> <br /> Watson also provides his brother with much detail about the cases he was currently trying—noting that “Daniel has only tried one case and got beat at that†while he “had 13 deposed of and only two have been decided†against him April 26—including a fraud case in which:<br /> <br /> “the judge once or twice tried to resist me but let me go to the jury on my persisting on a right to do so he then instead of charging argued for an hour and quarter against me telling the jury in some many words that there were no evidence of fraud – the jury went out at 2 ½ Oclock and came in at 10 ½ next morning with a verdict for me – much to the chagrin of His Honor and much to the disappointment of the opposing counsel Wrights who offered to bet 50$ that they would get a verdict after the jury had gone out . The whole bar were tremendously tickled to see the jury go against the judge so. . The judge has been as good as honey to me ever since.†April 26<br /> <br /> Despite fighting for the Union Frank Watson was a Democrat and comments on the April 1851 arrest of Thomas Sims:<br /> <br /> “There has since your departure been a great excitement in Boston on the arrest of one Sims a ‘fugitive’ – the military were under arms during the trial which lasted over a week. He was safely taken off by water to Savannah where on landing the papers report that he made a speech thanking his stars that he had got out of the hands of the abolitionists.†April 26<br /> <br /> On the subject of abolitionist politics John Kimball writes:<br /> <br /> “Yesterday Charles Sumner was elected Senator to Congress for six years it being the 26th balloting. He had just the number of votes necessary to a choice; the free soil stork is rising and that party is in a high state of felicity. The whig city government of Boston have refused Faneuil Hall for Danl Webster to speak in – he has made his last bid for the Presidency & it not come to him – poor fellow! he has seen his best days .†April 26<br /> <br /> Webster had fallen from popularity and been denied a speech at Faneuil Hall in large part because of his support for the Compromise of 1850 and its Fugitive Slave Act which had resulted in the arrest and re-enslavement of Thomas Sims as Watson mentions.<br /> <br /> Kimball also reports on a fire in a mill whose owner “Mr Bois†“wants the matter kept shady†and on sales of cloth and clothing items—Kimball was located in Lowell. Joshua Burgess writes of the state of business in New York City:<br /> <br /> “Mr. Clark came in and bo’t sixty dollars worth of collars he is a hard old chap beat us down then said you could buy the same thing cheaper here than we offered to him he went out said he could get the same otherwheres for half the money was gone about an hour came back and took all we had at our price he is worse than Lowell Factory Girls.†April 29<br /> <br /> John Watson's wife Elizabeth writes from Holyoke mainly updating him on her health and worries for his safety and “blessing the inventor of steam navigation†and the telegraph ND though she also informs him that he is “allowed to look at the ladies just look enough to gratify my curiosity†about how “lovely†they are May 7.<br /> <br /> Of interest to historians of the politics and industry of pre-war Massachusetts.<br /> <br /> 1 Paul Russinoff “A Savior of the Capitol†Military Images Magazine April 9 2021. unknown‎

Ami personnel de Ferdinand VII, engagé contre les Français pendant la Guerre de l'Indépendance, Joaquin José de Melgarejo (1780-1835) fut élevé en 1815 par le roi au titre de premier duc de San Fernando y de Quiroga. En septembre 1819, il devint premier ministre du royaume (jusqu'en mars 1820).Aucun exemplaire au CCF. ‎Le procès avait été intenté à la suite de la parution d'un article du 12 mars 1923 ("Une révélation formidable : la Banque de Paris et des Pays-Bas est-elle l'associée de Stinnes?"), très dans le genre des révélations de scandales financiers qui firent, durant toute sa vie, les délices de Roger Mennevée.Créée en avril 1920 par Pierre Claret de Fleurieu (1896-1976), pilote de la Grande Guerre, la Compagnie franco-roumaine de navigation aérienne, devenue en 1925 la Compagnie internationale de navigation aérienne ou Cidna, fut la première de l'histoire de l'aviation intercontinentale à transporter par avion de ligne des passagers dans un cadre commercial. ‎demi-veau brun moucheté, aut. doré sur pc. grenat, dos à 5 nerfs encadrés de doubles filets dorés, impression en double colonnes (mors fendu au plat sup., coiffes affaissées et lég. accidentées, coins émoussés, plats et coupes lég. émoussés avec qq. petits mq., fortes mouillures claires sur l’ensemble du texte sans atteinte à la lisibilité, qq. marques, notes et soulignures à l’encre) Texte capital sur le statut et le pouvoir juridictionnel dont la première édition remonte à 1573 et qui fut constamment republié tout au long du XVIIème puis du XVIIIème siècle. Tous les auteurs français de pays de droit écrit se réfèrent à ses analyses. L’ouvrage est divisé en deux parties. Dans la première nous avons un traité général par questions, dans la deuxième plus de 600 cas résolus. L’ensemble est terminé par un substantiel index qui rend l’ouvrage très utilisable. Relevons parmi les différentes matières traitées des réflexions sur le droit de pauvres à accéder en justice (cas n° 60 et 61), sur la discipline des magistrats (quæstio 59 ss.), sur les principes généraux qui gouvernent le prononcé des jugements (quæstio 8 ss.), les derniers centaines de cas sont consacrés à des matières spéciales : pouvoir du juge en matière pénale, en matière féodale, en matière religieuse.‎

The present work covers the period from January 1825 to September 1826; the previous volume published separately the same year contains the laws from 1823 and 1824. This volume contains laws on the judicial and financial operation of the state regulations regarding the church and indigenous populations and many other subjects during a formative period of Mexican independence. ‎Zacatecas: Imprenta del Superior Gobierno en Sto. Domingo 1824. Good plus. 14pp. Small quarto. Stitched as issued. Minor dampstaining at edges. Light purple discoloration at foot of text block. A later Zacatecas reimpression of a Spanish law regulating the behavior of magistrates judges and other public servants. The pamphlet is concerned primarily with the first two categories and prints thirty-three numbered points concerning their various responsibilities. The general category of "other" comprises seventeen points. The timing of the printing and reprinting is interesting. The law was first promulgated at Cadiz in 1813 but not printed in Zacatecas until 1824 meaning that Mexican independence occurred during the intervening years. Nevertheless the Zacatecan state government clearly thought that these laws sufficed as they ordered it reprinted "for its proper understanding and circulation throughout the state."
