Woodcut printer’s device on title of basilisk fighting a bird with motto “Terrena coelestibus obsunt;” in an architectural frame and woodcut historiated headpiece woodcut vignette beginning book of the Institutiones; on leaf 212r a full-page representation of the “arbor civilis.” Text is all-around gloss; printed in black and red. Dedicatory letter of H. Messaggius to Senator Federicus Baduarius prelim. leafs 2 is dated 1558. Period vellum three raised bands; leaves slightly offset slightly browned; hinge cracked at rear some quires loose rear pastedown glue-stained. The Corpus Iuris Civilis or the Justinian Code was the result of Emperor Justinian’s desire that existing Roman law be collected into a simple and clear system of laws or “code.” Tribonian a legal minister under Justinian lead a group of scholars in an effort to codify existing Roman law. The result was the first Justinian Code completed in 529. This code was later expanded to include Justinian’s own laws as well as two additional books on areas of the law. In 534 the Justinian Code made up of the Code the Digest and the Institutes was completed. Justinian’s collections were in ancient times always copied separately and afterwards they were printed in the same way. This part of the Institutiones falls under the whole Corpus Iuris Civilis is an early example before the unification under this heading. The present name of Justinian’s codification was only adopted in the 16th century when it was printed in 1583 by Dionysius Gothofredus. The legal thought behind the Corpus Juris Civilis served as the backbone of the single largest law reform of the modern age the Napoleonic Code which marked the abolition of feudalism. <br/><br/> [F. On the constitutionality in Ohio of taxing and regulating the sale of liquor each passed by a Republican state legislature under pressure from the W.C.T.U.; the Pond Law found unconstitutional required payment of an annual tax and a bond of a thousand dollars for saloon-keepers while the Scott Law further regulated and taxed strong drink. The arugments here for the validity of the Scott Law are in part based on Holst v. Roe which established the constitutionality of a per capita dog tax in Ohio. An ex-library copy from New York Bar Association Library in their characteristic binding with their early embossed stamp and early violet ink stamp to the first two leaves and shelfmark label to the spine. Very good.<br/><br/> Contemporary Dutch account of the Mississippi Land bubble. A renowned monument for the speculative mania of 1720: The great mirror of folly showing the rise progress and downfall of the bubble in stocks and windy speculation in France England and the Netherlands. It constitutes a collection of mostly satirical plates on the operations of John Law in France and the South Sea Bubble in England together with the text of the charters of speculative companies in Holland and a number of satyrical plays and comedies published during the bubble. The first text-part reprints the charters of some 30 speculative companies of commerce navigation and assurance' established or at least projected in Holland between June and October 1720. The following parts contain comedies and poetry published during the mania an explanation of the large print with playing cards known as April-kaart'. The book is divided into six sections with no general table of contents. The first part contains the articles of various Dutch companies. The second section consists of comedies and farces; the third part poems often containing street language; the fourth part descriptions of playing cards satirizing speculators; the fifth part four letters to "N.N."; and the sixth section chiefly pictures. ‎Boston: Heliotype Printing Co 1891. Map. Lithograph. 11' x 17 1/2".<br/><br/> This lovely 1891 map by Frederick Law Olmstead depicts the early plan of the Charlestown Playground. Extending from the Mystic River to Cambridge and Sever Street the map includes the plan for the proposed Men's and Women's Gymnasium at the southern end of the park. Beautifully detailed with trees boat houses bath houses promenades streets etc. Also includes Sullivan Square. <br><br>The oldest neighborhood in Boston Charlestown was originally a separate town before it became a city in 1848 and was annexed by Boston in 1874. The map is in good condition with minor wear along the folds and minor toning. <br><br>The map was created by the renowned Landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted 1822-1903 who also designed some of the most famous parks in the United States including Central Park in New York City and Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Issued as part of the "Third Annual Report of the Board of Commissioners of the Central Park" it covers Central Park in its entirety from 59th Street to 110th Street. The map identifies individual streets shrubbery lakes paths rocks and other features. Surrounding streets and avenues are also noted. The width of the roads are indicated in black while elevation is noted with red numbers. The map also reveals the completed partially completed and proposed areas and landscape of the park showing that at the time the southern portions of the park were completed before the northern.<br><br>The map was created by the renowned landscape architects Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux who were awarded the task of designing and completing what is today the most visited urban park in the United States. The park with around 800 acres was designed with every single tree pond bridge rock and bench individually planned. According to Olmstead "Every foot of the parks surface every tree and bush as well as every arch roadway and walk and been placed where it is for a purpose.'<br><br>Published by Sarony Major and Knapp. Engraved by W. H. Grant. Accompanied by a separate sheet with references to the map. The map is in good condition with minor toning and verso reinforcement align some original folds. Verso repair near top left border. Minor foxing. However the value of the book lies in his description of rural life . one of the outstanding features of the book is the author's attempt to compare and contrast the various social classes of the North and South. Although it is known that Olmsted privately acknowledged that there was a great deal of rowdyism and commonness among the northern farmers and laborers and no true aristocrats in the southern sense still he avoided this in his writing and played up what he considered the higher general level of culture in the North as compared with the general backwardness of the South."
