LIQUOR LAWNDISCRIMINATORY AGAINST THE POOR. Committee to Oppose the 15 Gallon Law.
Fifteen Gallons: or The Tyranny and Injustice of Sumptuary Law: An Appeal to the Good Sense of the People of Massachusetts
Boston: The Committee 1838. . 8vo side-stitiched; title water-stained and soiled; other pages showing evidence of past mold and damp; final sheet with probably wine stains Sabin 24308. OCLC lists 6 copies. This piece is sometimes catalogued under the authorship of Daniel L. Gibbons the Chairman of the Committee and Gardner Brewer the Secretary of the Committee and the Publisher. There is a second edition of the same year found in one copy only AAS. The temperance issue had been in the forefront in Massachusetts politics for a number of years prior to 1840. As temperance became more of an issue in the 1820s and 1830s individual towns began to debate whether to restrict liquor licenses. In 1838 the Boston Temperance Society promoted a law prohibiting the sale of liquor in quantities of less than fifteen gallons. The law passed the predominantly Whig legislature and was signed into law by the Whig governor Edward Everett. The fifteen-gallon law was plainly discriminatory and undemocratic. It was intended to prevent the retail sale of hard liquor in taverns. The poor were thus cut off almost completely from liquor whereas the rich who could buy in large quantities and drink at home were not affected at all. The law did not limit the purchase of beer and cider but its discriminatory nature concerned many of the moderate temperance advocates as well of course as the anti-temperance forces. The state election of 1839 hinged on the 15-gallon law. Although Everett's democratic opponent Marcus Morton was in fact a temperance advocate the Whigs were responsible for the law's passage and the issue quickly became a partisan one. In Worcester County the Whigs were divided on the issue and a group calling themselves the Liberal Whigs split off and supported Morton. The result in 1839 was a slim victory for Morton. The election campaign of 1840 resulted in an apparent reversal of positions on the temperance issue. Utilizing the obvious popularity of the "log cabin and hard cider" slogans the Whigs pulled out the cider barrel as a symbol of their affinity with the common man's way of life. The Democrats of Massachusetts pointed out the seeming inconsistency of the temperance Whigs and accused the Whigs of promoting intemperance and even of lacing the cider with harder spirits. The Whigs however claimed that the cider barrel was merely a symbol that cider was used sparingly with true sobriety. They likewise accused the Democrats of inconsistency with their seemingly holier-than-thou attitude. However though some writers and speakers on both sides went to extremes in their accusations neither side was really inconsistent in its stances on temperance in 1840; temperance and anti-temperance advocates could be found in both parties. See Andrew Baker. Temperance Issue in the Election of 1840: Massachusetts. Boston: [The Committee], 1838. unknown books

A SERMON PREACH'D AT HAZELINGFIELD IN THE COUNTRY OF CAMBRIDGE ON TUESDAY JULY 7. 1713. BEING THE DAY APPOINTED BY HER MAJESTY'S ROYAL PROCLAMATION FOR A PUBLICK THANKSGIVING FOR HER MAJESTY'S GENERAL PEACE
London: Printed for Richard Thurbourne . 1713. 2431pp. Octavo. Extracted and bound in later decorated wrappers without half-title. There are three revisions in the text in an early hand a very good copy. First edition of one of the earliest if not the earliest of Law's publications. He is identified on the title as Fellow of Emmanuel College and had been licensed as curate at Haslingfield in July of 1711. DNB notes two of his sermons from this period one in manuscript and one published at a somewhat later date. His entry into the pamphlet exchange surrounding the Bangorian controversy in 1717 led to his increased public visibility as did his spirited critique of Mandeville. With the publication of A PRACTICAL TREATISE UPON CHRISTIAN PERFECTION 1726 and A SERIOUS CALL TO A DEVOUT AND HOLY LIFE 1729 he evolved as one of the primary influences on the English Evangelical revival and made a lasting impression on individuals as diverse as Gibbon Samuel Johnson and John Wesley. ESTC locates only five copies in North America and only thirteen abroad. ESTC T66733. Printed for Richard Thurbourne ... unknown books

Law George Henry
BEAUTIES OF SINCERITY OR A SELECTION OF PASSAGES PROMPTED BY
PRINTING HISTORY Law George Henry. THE BEAUTIES OF SINCERITY OR A SELECTION OF PASSAGES PROMPTED BY HEART-FELT LOVE. ON THE DEATH OF HRH THE PRINCESS CHARLOTTE OF WALES & SAXE COBURG. London: Printed for the Proprietor and Sold by the Publishers of the Booksellers Remembrancer 1818 First edition. Contemporary rose calf raised bands blind compartments gilt. Light rubbing and short split in upper joint expertly mended but an attractive copy of this unusual example of printing in gold. Four lines of the title-page are printed from gold leaf not illuminated but printed from type: BEAUTIES OF SINCERITY/ HRH/ THE PRINCESS CHARLOTTE OF WALES/ & SAXE CORBURG. OCLC locates six copies of this title all with the Wetton & Jarvis imprint but none with this special imprint. The death of the beloved Princess Charlotte during childbirth in November 1817 shocked the English nation; she was one of the very few members of the Royal family that was universally admired by the public for her honesty grace and sympathetic personality; her death only drew more attention to the corruption at Court which included flagrant back-stabbing insanity drunkenness adultery and mysterious deaths. Nearly every one of the sermons in this volume comments candidly on her virtues as well as the Court scandals. Printing in gold can be traced to an incunable of 1482 one known copy of the first edition of Euclid has survived with its dedication leaf printed in "gold ink". In 1831 Thomas de la Rue printed a single copy of the New Testament in gold for presentation to William IV. And the June 29 1838 issue of `The Sun' newspaper was printed in gold in honor of Queen Victoria's coronation. Under 100 power magnification it is clear that the gold printing in this volume was not from "gold ink" as described by Colin Clair and other authorities although copies of the regular imprint may have been printed with gold colored ink. This copy was printed from gold leaf with a glaze applied in a first pass through the press; the gold leaf applied in the second pass. A hand-colored portrait of Princess Charlotte is laid in. hardcover books

ROMAN LAW.
Corpus Juris Civilis
Amsterdam: Johannes Blaeu Louis and Daniel Elzevier 1664. Hardcover. Near Fine. Two volumes in one. 24 1037 3; 2 820 2 pp. 8vo. 195 x 116 mm bound in contemporary German pigskin remains of two ties at fore-edge edges stained red. Amsterdam: Johannes Blaeu Louis and Daniel Elzevier 1664. Editio Nova Prioribus Correctior. A fine edition of the most comprehensive digest of Roman legislation the basis for all modern civil law. The work was first compiled by order of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I and the first three parts The Institutes Pandects and Codex appeared between 529 and 535. A fourth part the Novellae was added subsequently containing a collection of Imperial legislation up to the year 565. After a four century lull in classical scholarship the eleventh century witnessed a revival of interest in Roman law in western Europe. Copies of the Corpus again began to be copied in great abundance as they had been when the work was first compiled in the sixth century and the work certainly acted as a guide to the foundation of modern national legal systems throughout Europe. The title itself "Corpus Juris Civilis" was a sixteenth century application. The full page engraved title page in contemporary hand-colouring shows a portrait of Justinian surrounded by allegorical figures with Justice at the top. The present copy also contains copious manuscript notes in a contemporary hand.

Johannes Blaeu, Louis and Daniel Elzevier hardcover books

Nineteenth Century American Prison Log Book "Jail Entry Book"
Illinois 1883-1884. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. Contemporary sheep over thick heavy boards; in heavy canvas dust jacket with lettering stamped on upper board and spine; folio 445x287mm; pp. 479 lined ledger paper with about 50 pages blank at rear. Manufactured by J. M. W. Jones of Chicago. Sheep heavily chipped with later repairs; spine perished. Dust jacket tattered torn and stained; frayed along the edges; rear panel competely separated but present and interesting perhaps because it's so battered and because lettering identifies Seth Hanchett Cook County Sheriff see below. Some marginal dust-soiling; last few pages a bit chipped along fore-edge; but text is unscathed and perfectly legible throughout.

Tidy cursive records in black ink the offender's name charge amount of bail sentence and cell number. "Amount of bail" is sometimes left blank but often all fields are complete. Offenders include men and women arrested for larceny burglary assault murder insanity forgery and more. If convicted the sentence is recorded usually with the note "sent to Penit;" if insane a note reads "sent to physician." Seth Hanchett's predecessor Chicago Police Chief William J. McGarigle 1881-1882 was rumored to have been involved in bail bond rackets in cahoots with Michael C. McDonald a wealthy and powerful gamesman who controlled the internal mechanisms of the Democratic Central Committee in the last quarter of the 19th Century. McDonald tried to keep McGarigle in office via internal political machinations which proved to be no match for the plans of Mayor Carter H. Harrison and the people of Cook County who elected Republican Seth Hanchett as Sheriff in 1882. He was the county's first 4-year Sheriff. Hanchett was succeeded by the "bumbling" Canute R. Matson in 1886. Matson was a close friend of McGarigle who by this time had been placed in charge of the disease-infested Cook County Hospital likely due to McDonald's pull. This volume is interesting as a legal document but it may also reveal something about its place in Cook County political history. Worthy of further study. hardcover books
