First Edition of the first ordinances of Lorraine as part of France. Although the Duchies of Lorraine and Bar had been ceded to France by the Treaty of Vienna in 1738 for political reasons Louis XV postponed annexation and named his father-in-law Stanislas Leszczy ski deposed King of Poland as the last titular sovereign Duke of Lorraine and Bar. The two duchies were not officially annexed to France until the latter's death in 1766. This comprehensive set of revised laws governing the newly French capital city of the province of Lorraine was promulgated three years later on 4 January 1769. The highly detailed regulations cover matters of municipal safety and hygiene commerce and trade and interpersonal relations providing a vivid and sometimes surprising view of daily life. The 18 chapters are devoted to: protection of Sundays and holidays on which only fruit and vegetable sellers are allowed to work before 9 am; regulation of foreigners and their conditions of residence and admission to the status of bourgeois; relations between servants and their masters; regulation of the grain market delivery of grains etc.; rules for bakers butchers sausage-makers fishmongers open-air-markets taverners restaurateurs and billiard-hall owners; general commerce delivery of wood drivers and delivery-boys private porters of chairs public carriages street hygiene and safety fires and échenillage  the obligatory extermination of caterpillars and other arboreal pests. ‎Fannin County Texas: Clerk 1845. . Printed broadside 12 3/4 x 7 3/4 inches finished in manuscript; has been folded in half and then in thirds. It is docketed on the verso Baker is fined $10.00 plus $1.75 costs and 60¢ interest. The bottom half of the document is a "Taxed list of Costs" on the "Clerk's Fees" side the relevant articles have been filled in which amount to the $1.75. Beside this is a list of "Sheriffs Fees" covering Empanneling a jury; summoning witness; taking bond levying execution etc. Baker moved to Texas in 1837 and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Houston & Texas Central Railroad 1852. From 1880Ð1886 he was Mayor of Houston. He owned part of the Houston Post 1883. The judge was William N. Porter who also came to Texas in 1838 and in 1841/42 he represented Bowie County in the House of the Sixth Congress. ‎Jackson County IN 1841. Buff wove paper black or brown ink. Occasional chips splitting along folds toning ink splotches and light soiling; fold lines. Texts largely unaffected and legible overall. Good to Very Good condition. 97 loose documents of varying lengths and paper sizes. Most single leaf and written recto only; few multiple pages/leaves. Sizes vary from ~ 2-1/2" x 7-1/2" slips to ~12-1/4" x 8" leaves. <br/><br/>Large lot of signed documents by various Jackson Circuit Court justices of the peace primarily recording the verdicts of court cases nature of the offense and fines assessed and collected or not yet collected. The vast majority of the cases tried are for assault and battery usually receiving a $1 fine if found guilty and "profane swearing" a $5 - $10 fine although "affray" trespass forced imprisonment and "passing spurious money" are also listed. Documents include names of plaintiffs defendants justices occasional other parties sheriffs clerks etc and usually the township in which the case was tried. Justices include William Crenshaw John Goble Charley W. Sitwell James Kelly John Moore William Williams Jonathan Graham Jacob Kester Jacob Brown and many others. Most are from the years 1838 - 1841 ~85%. A nice cache of material documenting this era in Indiana history. unknown books‎
