‎coiffe superieure frottée, L'ouvrage est un des plus importants de Mably, celui où il affirme et développe ses idées politiques. Profondément marqué par la lecture des anciens, dont l'ouvrage est d'ailleurs prétendument traduit, il soutient que la politique doit être soumise à la raison, que le bohneur des hommes repose sur la vertu et, enfin, que le rôle de la politique est de régler les moeurs. Ce traité de morale contient l'essentiel des théories de Mably, « le plus important, après Morelly et Rousseau, des socialistes moraux du siècle » (Lichtenberger).INED, 2992.Mably fut cependant méfiant envers tout système politique, sa vraie croyance portait sur l'homme de la nature tel que l'a exposé Rousseau. ‎(Représentant du peuple aux Assemblées constituante et législative) Armand Barbès, condamné à mort en 1839 pour tentative d’insurrection et amnistié par Louis-Philippe, est envoyé au Mont-Saint-Michel le 17 juillet 1839 avec trois autres condamnés dont Martin-Bernard, qui laissera un récit détaillé de son séjour. Blanqui et cinq autres insurgés les rejoignent le 6 février 1840.Les détenus luttent dès leur arrivée contre les rigueurs de l’isolement cellulaire, se parlant par les croisées, les conduits de cheminée et à travers les parois et contactant aussi les habitants du Mont. Barbès, Martin-Bernard et Delsade réussissent à ouvrir les portes de leurs chambres pour se réunir. Découverts en avril 1841, ils sont sanctionnés par un premier emprisonnement dans les loges du Mont. L’administration fait alors équiper leurs cellules du Petit et du Grand Exil de doubles grilles, pour empêcher les prisonniers de s’approcher des croisées. Dans la nuit du 10 au 11 février 1842, Barbès, Blanqui et quelques autres tentent de s’évader, par temps de brouillard, à l’aide d’une corde de draps noués. Barbès descend le premier mais se blesse en tombant et fait échouer la tentative. Tous sont à nouveau enfermés dans les loges où Barbès contracte cette fois la phtisie. Toute la presse d’opposition condamne le régime cellulaire et les doubles grilles.edition of this 'prison-literature' classic: during the trial following his imprisonment together with Blanqui et Barbès for taking part in the Seasons-Uprising ('l'insurrection dite des Saisons') Bernard refused to defend himself in the Chamber of Peers (Chambre des Pairs) calling his opponents ''my enemies, not my judges'' which resulted in his deportation to Mont-Saint-Michel. . Her opponent in the ‘bowling alley’, a barren hillside outside a castle, is the seasoned diplomat Talleyrand, who is sitting on the ground facing her, his crutch visible to the right. The skittles are miniature images of European princes; King Louis Philippe is recognizable from behind in the centre of the print, and half-hidden in front of him, is his eldest son, the young Ferdinand-Philippe Duc d’Orleans. Supporting himself with his left hand, Talleyrand has restored to its place the diminuative effigy of Dom Miguel I, the auto- cratic young ruler of Portugal, with his right hand.A vitriolic caricature of all members of the July Monarchy govern- ment, mocking its repression of the opposition, and its weak foreign policy. Louis Philippe, represented as a fat, effeminate king wearing a toga, is accompanied by a decadent family and scheming, corrupt ministers. The composition is dominated by Talleyrand to the left who is portrayed as Vulcan, forging chains and protocols. He is sitting on netting with which he ensnares the world; a fleur-de-lys is tattooed on his right forearm; his orthopaedic shoe is on the correct foot and his crutch is partly buried under documents to his right.‎

The king is represented as puppet-master controlling his theatre below; he is pulling into action the recently appointed Marshal Gerard, who is standing in front of a table surrounded by seven other ministerial puppets; the rivals Thiers2 and Guizot3 are recognizable in the centre, whilst Talleyrand occupies a prominent position to the right supported on a crutch under his left shoulder. Some light traces of foxing.1 Etienne Maurice, Comte Gerard (1773–1852) had an exceptionally distin- guished military career throughout the Napoleonic period reaching the rank of divisional general. Louis-Philippe appointed him Minister of War and a Marshal of France. In this capacity he commanded the French army during the Belgian Revolution and briefly served as prime minister in 1834;2 LouisAdolpheThiers(1797–1877),politicianandhistorian,wasamemberof the liberal opposition during the reign of Charles X. He persuaded Louis- Philippe to act in 1830, and served as foreign minister to the July Monarchy in 1836 and in 1840. Thiers became Head of State after the Franco-Prussian War;3 Francois Pierre Guillaume Guizot (1787–1874), statesman and historian, was a liberal opponent to the reactionary Restoration government of Charles X. As Orleanist Minister of Education (1832–37), he established primary schooling. Guizot subsequently served as Orleanist foreign minister (1840–47) and prime minister (1847–48).Dwyer 763. Platemark 32 × 27cm; overall paper size 36.3 × 27.6 cm.,rare,bon étatFrench caricature of the Quadruple Alliance between France, Great Britain, Spain, and Portugal signed on 22nd April 1834 which crowned Talleyrand’s diplomatic career. The treaty, conceived by Palmerston to strengthen the liberal countries of western Europe against the auto- cratic northern monarchies, supported progressive governments recently installed in Spain and Portugal, against the claims of rival pretenders to the throne representing traditional interests. The infant Queen Isabella II of Spain1 was challenged by her uncle Don Carlos,2 and the young Queen Maria II of Portugal3 by her uncle Dom Miguel.4 The print shows Talleyrand peacefully reclining on a monument, as the architect of the treaty with pandemonium surrounding him. In apseudo-resurrection scene Don Carlos is shown flying on high shed- ding proclamations causing an explosion on the stock exchange, whilst below, the Queen Regent of Spain with her daughter Isabella, King Louis-Philippe and two other princes are looking up in a daze. Military conflict is indicated in a dark, brooding background.1 Isabella II of Spain (1830–1868), daughter of Ferdinand VII and Maria Cristina of the Two Sicilies, succeeded to the throne, because her father induced the Cortes to set aside the Salic law to re-establish the ancient law of succession. This was contested by her uncle, the Infante Carlos, who fought a civil war to support his claim with the help of the conservative opposition;2 Carlos Maria Isidro de Borbony Borbon-Parma(1788–1855),younger brother of King Ferdinand VII, known as Count of Molina, claimed the throne of Spain according to Salic law which excluded female succession introduced during the 18th century; the law was changed by Ferdinand in favour of his daughter Isabella. As a result the country was rent by civil war between the incumbent regency supported by the liberals and the Carlist pretender backed by the traditionalists;3 Dona Maria II (1819–1853), daughter of Pedro I Emperor of Brazil, became Queen Regnant of Portugal, when her liberal father abdicated the Portuguese throne. The decision was disputed by her absolutist uncle Miguel who usurped the throne, but was forced to abdicate in 1834;4 Dom Miguel(1802–1866),secondsonofKingJoaoofPortugal,aconserva- tive influenced by Metternich, led two revolts against his liberal father, and was exiled as a consequence. After betrothal to his young niece Maria II of Portugal, he took sole power and ruled as Miguel I of Portugal from 1828 to 1834, overthrowing the liberal constitution. In 1831 his elder brother Pedro abdicated the throne of Brazil, and ejected Miguel after a three-year civil war to re-establish Maria as Queen Regnant in 1834.‎
