WILLIAM COBBETT 1763-1835 was an English pamphleteer farmer journalist and member of parliament who was born in Farnham Surrey. He believed that reforming Parliament including abolishing the "rotten boroughs" would help to end the poverty of farm labourers. Relentlessly he sought an end to the borough-mongers sinecurists and 'tax-eaters' . He was against the Corn Laws which imposed a tax on imported grain. Early in his career he was a loyalist devotee of King and Country: but later he joined and publicised radicalism which helped the Reform Act 1832 and to his being elected that year as one of the two Members of Parliament for the newly enfranchised borough of Oldham. Not a Catholic he became a forceful advocate of Catholic Emancipation in Britain. He wrote many polemics concerning subjects from political reform to religion but is best known for his book from 1830 Rural Rides which is still in print today. Sm.8vo. Four papers in three volumes foolscap folio uniformly bound in half brown calf and cloth sides spine title labels; ink stamp of the Law Society of the United Kingdom on the title page and final blank page of the second volume. The PAPERS are thus: 1 In continuation of Papers presented May 1854. Presented to both Houses of Parliament by Command of Her Majesty February 1855 xii 222pp. 2 In continuation of Papers presented February 1855. Presented to both Houses of Parliament by Command of Her Majesty August 1855 viii 164pp. 3 In continuation of Papers presented 2 June 1856. Presented to both Houses of Parliament by Command of Her Majesty 21 March 1857 viii 208pp. 4 In continuation of Papers presented 21 March 1857. Presented to both Houses of Parliament by Command of Her Majesty 25 August 1857 vi 100pp. BUT NOTE that the binder has misplaced all but the preliminaries of the August 1855 paper - 2 above - in the third volume of this set where they follow the August 1857 paper. The preliminaries are placed at the end of the first volume. The paper is a little yellowed and some creasing of corners on a few leaves; the first and last leaves of paper 4 have been professionally repaired. The bindings are a trifle rubbed at the extremities but in nice bright condition. A very good complete set albeit with the misplacement of the second paper. The material overwhelming concerns VDL/Tasmania and Western Australia but with some relating to NSW Victoria and South Australia. From each paper: 1 VDL pp1-87 WA pp97-222; 2 Tasmania pp1-67 WA pp87-167; 3 WA pp1-144 Tasmania pp145-83; 4 WA pp1-86 Tasmania pp87-92. . Printed by W.
