L'acquisizione del MIBAC per la Galleria Nazionale di Palazzo Spinola di un prezioso servizio di porcellana cinese commissionato a fine Settecento da un raffinato esponente della prestigiosa famiglia degli Spinola è l'occasione per approfondire l'affascinante storia del tè e dell'origine del suo uso, prima in Cina e poi in Giappone, dove divenne protagonista del rigido e complesso rito della "cerimonia del tè". Sviluppandosi l'importazione in Occidente grazie ai commerci delle Compagnie delle Indie, con il tè si diffuse la necessità di oggetti per servirlo prima anche essi importati dall'Oriente, poi prodotti dalle manifatture europee che dall'inizio del Settecento riuscirono a produrre porcellana. Il libro ricostruisce questo viaggio, dalle terre della Cina ai salotti dell'Europa settecentesca, e attraverso i documenti dell'aristocratica famiglia degli Spinola e la presentazione dei servizi a essa appartenuti offre un quadro del diffondersi della moda del tè anche nella società genovese.‎
