Moore, Tom [Thomas]
Songs of Ireland [Irish Tunes; Melodies] [RARE EDITION]
RARE EDITION of a selection from 'Irish Melodies' by Thomas Moore (1779-1852) - an Irish poet, singer, songwriter, and entertainer, best known for 'Irish Melodies' (published also under various titles, such as 'Songs of Ireland', 'Irish Tunes' etc.) which became enormously popular throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, for example 'Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms', which is included in this volume. Moore began writing these poems following a request by the publishers James and William Power to write lyrics to a series of Irish tunes with Sir John Andrew Stevenson as arranger of the music, and eventually the poems were published in ten volumes and a supplement between 1808 and 1834, the musical arrangements of the last volumes after Stevenson's death (1833) being done by Henry Bishop. Karpinowitz, Abraham / Zinkin, Dov [Typographical Design]
The Story of the Vilnian righteous proselyte count Valentin Potocki [Abraham ben Avraham; Valentine; Walentyn; Pototzki; Pototski] [IN YIDDISH] [LIMITED EDITION OF 500 COPIES].
IN YIDDISH. RARE LIMITED EDITION OF 500 COPIES - COPY No.119. Rare monograph on Abraham ben Abraham (1700-1749), also known as Count Valentine Potocki (Valentin Pototzki; Walentyn Pototski) - a purported Polish nobleman of the Potocki family who converted to Judaism and was burned at the stake by the Roman Catholic Church because he had renounced Catholicism and had become an observant Jew. According to Jewish oral traditions, he was known to the revered Talmudic sage, the Vilna Gaon (Rabbi Elijah Ben Shlomo Zalman (1720-1797), and his ashes were interred in the relocated grave of the Vilna Gaon in Vilna's new Jewish cemetery. The author - Abraham Karpinowitz (1913-2004) was born in Vilna, Poland (present-day Vilnius, Lithuania), the city that serves as both the backdrop and the central character for his stories. He survived the Holocaust in the Soviet Union and, after two years in an internment camp on the island of Cyprus, moved to Israel, where he lived until his death. 280x210mm. 116 pages. Illustrated Hardcover. Cover slightly dirty. Spine and spine hinges faded/yellowing. Spine edges bumped. This extremely rare and exquisitely published book is otherwise in very good condition.
