ISBN-13: 9781584771852; ISBN-10: 1584771852. Hardcover. New. $24.95 An English translation with a thorough index of Justinian's Institutes. After assuming the throne of the East Roman or Byzantine Empire in 527 Justinian Favius Petrus Sabbatius Justinianus A.D. 483-565 sought to revise the most important legal writings of the original republic and empire including the body of laws that had accumulated during the last 300 years. His revision of the Institutes of Gaius c.A.D. 115-c.180 is perhaps the most significant volume to emerge from this program. Written around A.D. 161 it is an elementary treatise on Roman private law that served as a standard text for 300 years. Justinian's revision brought the original up to date while maintaining its qualities of clear exposition and perspicuous judgment. It was later combined with three other revisions the Digest Code and Novels to form the Corpus Juris Civilis a profound influence on European law from the tenth century onwards. Teall 1849-1924 studied science at Cambridge University and in 1874 he was the first recipient of the Sedgwick prize for geology and he was elected a Fellow of his college St John's in 1875. 'Teall was one of the first British geologists to study the mineralogical changes induced by stresses within the earth's crust and to deal with the natural history and genesis of many important metamorphic minerals…Teall's extensive study of British igneous rocks led him to publish his greatly admired British Petrography 1888 a beautifully illustrated work that remains a monument to his scientific ability his broad outlook and his clear interpretation of geological phenomena. His wife was responsible for some of the fine illustrations' ODNB. Unusually this copy retains the original title-page with the Birmingham: Watson Brothers and Douglas 1886 imprint and a leaf of 'Abbreviations' which were presumably intended to be removed at the end of publication and replaced with new preliminaries issued with the final section published the new preliminaries are also present here. The presence of the original title would indicate that this copy was bound up from the original parts. BMNH V p. 2080. hardcover

Blaeu, 1642. Un fort vol. au format pt in-12 (148 x 88 mm) de 1 page de titre unknown
