Sir Nicholas Conyngham Tindal as Solicitor General. Autograph Letter Signed 'N. C. Tindal' to Lord Lyndhurst Lord Chancellor proposing his friend Rev. T. Foord Bowes for the living of Thwing Yorkshire. With Lyndhurst's autograph endorsement.
No place or date. November 1827. Tindal is notable for defending Queen Caroline in her 1820 adultery trial and for introducing the special verdict 'Not Guilty by reason of insanity' in the case of Daniel M'Naghten. The letter is undated but Tindal states that it was a written a week after the death of Rev. John Kirk Rector of Thwing which took place on 6 November 1827 see Kirk's death notice Gent. Mag. November 1827. 3pp. 4to. Bifolium. In fair condition aged and worn. Folded four times. Tindal begins his letter: 'My dear Lord Chancellor I am requested by my friend the Revd. T. Foord Bowes who I believe is not altogether unknown to your Lordship to use what Interest I may have with you in his favour as an applicant for the Living of Thwing in the County of York which became vacant by the sudden death of the late Incumbent in the course of last week.' He proceeds to describe Bowes's attainments: 'Mr. Foord Bowes is a Master of Arts of Trinity College Cambridge who has lived from the time of his quitting the University in a House belonging to a small property of his own in the immediate Vicinity of the parish. His Father was the Rector of this Living some years since and he himself has performed the Duty as Curate for the last 20 years to the greatest satisfaction of the Parishioners. During this time he has been an active Magistrate of the West Riding of the County of York.' A change in Bowes's circumstances has 'made this Living a very great and important Object to him independely of the Value which he sets upon it from his long and early association with it'. Lyndhurst has endorsed the letter in faint pencil on the reverse of the second leaf the writing being difficult to decipher. In the event the living being presented to William Joseph Butler. For the subject of the letter Timothy Fysh or Fish Foord Bowes 1777-1861 see Alum. Cantab. He was Chaplain to King George IV Deputy Clerk of the Closet to King William IV and Chaplain to Queen Victoria. In 1845 he was successfully sued by a former groom for criminal conversation. Oxford Union Society leaflet dated from 'Christ Church May 24th 1955'. A nice piece of Oxford Union ephemera with the three signatures - 'James Robertson-Justice.' 'Compton Mackenzie' and 'Michael Maclagan' - printed in a row on the otherwise blank reverse of the 25.5 x 20.5 cm leaf which is aged and worn with closed tears to extremities and a fold line. Printed beneath the text of the advertisement on the other side of the paper is an attractive illustration in imitation of infant drawing printed in brown red green black and white on a pink ground. Gibraltar 1892 and 1901. . Thirteen items from the Harington family papers. Sir Richard Harington of Ridlington 12th Baronet was educated at Eton and Christ College Cambridge. Called to the Bar in 1886 he practised as a barrister on the Oxford Circuit before taking up an appointment as a Puisne Judge in the High Court of Justice at Fort William in Bengal in 1899 serving in that capacity until returning home in 1913. In later years he acted as Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant for Herefordshire. The collection is in fair condition aged and worn. ONE: Printed document completed in manuscript signed by the Governor of Gibraltar Sir Robert Biddulph 1839-1918 docketed by Harington 'Letters patent appointing Sir R. Harington temporarily Chief Justice of Gibraltar' dated 8 May 1892. The document with damaged seal of Queen Victoria under paper appoints 'His Honour Sir Richard Harington Baronet Judge of the County Court of Worcester … to act as Chief Justice of Gibraltar during the absence on leave of His Honour Sir Henry James Burford Burford Hancock Knight Companion of Our Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George'. TWO: Typed document signed by Colonial Secretary of Gibraltar Henry More Jackson 1849-1908 docketed 'letters Patent appointing Sir Richard Harington Bt acting Chief Justice of Gibraltar' dated March 1901. With seal of Edward VII under paper. Appointing Harington to the position 'during the absence on leave of His Honour Stephen Herbert Gatty'. 2pp. folio. On letterhead of the Colonial Secretary's Office Gibraltar 3 April 1901. 1p. 8vo. Informing him of the Easter closure of the 'Public Offices'. FIVE: Printed grey-paper 'Pass to Sketch or Photograph' in Gibraltar issued to Harington. Signed by Major Crawford Assistant Adjutant General stamped and dated 30 June 1901. SIX: Printed pink-paper 'Officer's Pass' made out to Harington and giving him 'permission to pass along the roads but not off them nor along the footpaths comprised in the triangle – Willis's Signal Station and Windmill Hill Gate'. Signed by Crawford and dated 31 March 1901. SEVEN and EIGHT: Two duplicated letters in facsimile manuscript from the Assistant Military Secretary. 14 and 15 March 1901; the first from Government House the second from 'The Convent'. Each 1p. 12mo. The two relating to a visit by 'the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York'. The first with the names of 'Sir R. and Lady Harington' added an invitation to 'the Dinner to be given by His Royal Highness on board the “Ophir†on the 21st. March. The second with 'The Acting Chief Justice' added inviting Harington to 'the Landing Stage on H. M. Dock … to receive Their Royal Highnesses'. NINE: Eastern Telegraph Company telegram from 'Nicolson' inviting Harington and his wife to dinner. 4 April 1901. TEN: Notebook with waxed black cloth cover containing itemised manuscript account of expenditure on food. No evidence of author or place but compiled during Harington's second tenure between 5 March and 19 May 1901 by Lady Harington's household. 118pp. 12mo with 2pp. 12mo on leaves loosely inserted. Adolphus the proof Sheet of the judgment of the Court of Exchequer Chamber in Wilson v. Fuller. He has made no other alteration therein than the addition of a word thinking the Judgment expresses very clearly and faithfully what was delivered by the Court'. On letterhead of the 'Judges' Chambers' 'Supreme Court Gibraltar.' Dated by Harington 'Gibraltar 18 May 1901'. 10pp. 8vo. In fair condition lightly aged and worn on ten leaves held together with a brass stud. With a number of deletions and emendations. The first paragraph reads: 'Rex v Alvarez Rex v Galliano This was an application by the Attorney General acting on the instructions of the British Minister in Morocco that certain dies a punching machine & a quantity of <> partly in dies partly in rolled plates & partly in ingots found in the possession of the prisoners respectively should be delivered up to the Government of Morocco - the application purporting to be founded on S27 of 24 & 25 Vict c. 99. The prisoners being convicted plus undergoing their sentence had no more standing before the Court nor had they instructed counsel but Mr Ballon who defended Galliano at his trial was heard as amicus curiae & raised the question .' After going into the details of the case Harington concludes: 'On the whole I am of opinion that I have no power to make any order in the matter except to direct as I do that the articles in question shall remain in the charge of the police unitl otherwise disposed of in due course of law.' Early on in the judgment he elaborates: 'In this state of things it appears to me clear that the only persons who can claim them under S27 are the Officers of Her majesty's Mint or the Solicitor to Hks Majesty's Treasury or some person authorised by them to receive them. The learned Attorney General was not in possession of authority from either the one or the other - nor was there any evidence that the abstruction called the Moorish Government the Sultan of Morocco as an individual or any person representing him was in possession of any such authority.' White label 'ON VIEW' stuck to front cover. 392 3 lots fully priced in manuscript for the proprietor with the firm's stamp and a signature dated from 'The Exchange Calcutta 24th. February 1912'. An interesting and evocative piece of Raj social history itemising the property of a judge who was selling up before retiring to England. The first item is 'A CURRY Stone with muller' '-/8/- lot' and Item 392 'a Salamander' '3/- lot'. The last three lots unnumbered are 'a Standard Square Pianoforte by Schiedmayer and Soehne Stuttghart in mahogany case resting on four supports' '125/- lot' 'a teakwood morocco covered revolving Music Stool' '10/-â€-' and 'a Chubb's Fire-resisting Iron Safe with key … on teakwood stand' '115/-â€-'. 25 February 1911. On letterhead of Failand House Failand near Bristol. See Fry’s entry in the Oxford DNB. Dickinson was an influential proponent of the League of Nations. The present item concerns the London Declaration concerning the Laws of Naval War an international code of maritime law following on from the second Hague Conference. Great Britain as the world’s chief naval power had felt that such a court should be governed by defined principles and had convened an international concerence in London in 1908. The Declaration that was issued three years later comprised 71 articles. 3pp 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition lightly aged. Folded once. Signed ‘Edw: Fry’ and addressed to ‘W. H. Dickinson Esq MP’. He begins by expressing a willingness to ‘join the General Committee to promote the ratification of the Declaration of London’ feeling that ‘if both it & the Convention for the prize Court be not satisfied our Governt. will stand in a sad position amongst the nations. We proposed the International Court at the Hague we carried it through we called the Conference of London we got what we were contented with - & if now we withdraw who will take the trouble to negociate with us’ Were Britain’s ‘food supply’ being ‘placed in peril’ then of course ‘we would withdraw & accept our disgrace - but I do not think that this is so’. 25 February 1911. All three published in London by His Majesty's Stationery Office. The first two published in 1925 and the last in 1926. All three 8vo; the first and last 12pp the second 8pp. All three in good condition on lightly aged and worn paper. With shelfmarks stamps and labels of the Board of Education Reference Library London. The remit of the committee was 'to examine the problem of child adoption from the point of view of possible legislation and to report upon the main provisions which in their view shuold be included in any Bill on the subject'. In an amendment to the final report Home Secretary Sir William Joynson-Hicks instructs the committee 'to enquire into the working of the provisions of the Children Act 1908 which deal with the protection of infant life and the visitation of voluntary homes'. The only copies of the three reports on COPAC are at the University of Southampton. All three published in London by His Majesty's Stationery Office. Caricature of the Author Philip James Bailey 1816-1902
Near Fine. N.d. circa 1900. The pen and ink ink drawing is 20 by 11.5 cm. Depicted is Philip James Bailey who is carrying under his arms his 1839 magnum opus the very long poem "Festus" admired by Tennyson and other leading poets of the day and supposedly an influence on James Joyce. The work was Bailey's only success and he continued to add to it during his long life following its initial appearance. It is this pattern of accretions which Ford would appear to be lampooning in this caricature. Ford is best remembered today for illustrating the dozen Andrew Lang colored fairy book series and next for illustrating works by Scott Kipling and many others. He also did free-standing painting and some of his work belongs now to museum collections. Matted. unknown

Not to be mistaken for the automaker industrialist who lived during the same time the English artist Ford is best remembered for illustrations in the popular Andrew Lang colored fairy book series. Besides doing illustrations for books by Scott and Kipling among many others Ford did free-standing painting some of which today hangs in museum collections. Matted. Ford, Henry Justice (1860-1941)
Caricature Self-Portrait "Little Breeches
Near Fine. N.d. circa 1900. The pen and ink lightly tinted drawing is 20 by 15 cm. It is an amusing self-portrait all big blocky head boots and suspenders suspended over the artist's pate. Not really characteristic of this versatile artist's work yet a splendid work of great economy and humor somewhat in the vein of Edward Lear. Ford is best remembered today for illustrating the dozen Andrew Lang colored fairy book series and next for illustrating works by Scott Kipling and many others. He also did free-standing painting and some of his work belongs now to museum collections. Matted. unknown

Very good in the publisher's navy cloth with the front inner hinge cracked but holding and a few ink markings to the front paste-down. Else crisp and clean. INSCRIBED on the title page by Chief Justice Earl Warren "For Don J. Campbell with the best wishes of Earl Warren." Campbell was an advertising salesman for the Dallas Morning News. According to Warren Commission Exhibit number 2436 Campbell testified that Jack Ruby was in his office around 12:00 noon when Kennedy's motorcade was proceeding and just before he was assassinated. Campbell testified that Ruby who was a regular advertising customer was complaining about the seedy nature of his business and also bragging about some of his political connections see Campbell's full official testimony here: https://www.history-matters.com/archive/jfk/wc/wcvols/wh25/pdf/WH25_CE_2436. pdf The Warren Commission Report is often found signed by future President Gerald Ford who sat on the commission but rarely found signed by Warren. The infamous Henry Justice Lord of the Manor of Rufforth inveterate bibliophile and book-thief was eventually sentenced to exile for robbing the Cambridge University Library before residing in Italy & expiring at The Hague. Henry's wife travel-writer Elizabeth Justice noted that his love of books destroyed their lives and marriage. This set belonged to prolific & notable French librarian Anatole de Montaiglon with his gilt monograms ornamenting spines and exquisite bookplates adorning front pastedowns 'de jour en jour en apprenant mourant'.
