Boston: Joseph Knight Company 1896. Celebrated Crimes was originally published in France between 1839-1840 in eight volumes. This First Edition Thus is an English translation published in 1896 by Joseph Knight Company of Boston. Unlike other American publishers who followed the French prototype of releasing this work of famous true crimes in eight volumes this publisher chose instead to release the entire work in three volumes only of which this is Volume III from a broken set. This particularly handsome and ornate book includes four famous crimes: The Marquise de Ganges Karl Ludwig Sand Vaninka and Urban Grandier. Joseph Knight had several alternate bindings using the same designs but with different colors. This is the red-cloth version. There was also one in brown cloth. The elaborate design shows nine vignette drawings of a gilt sword within a mirrored border of black bats on the front panel plus three identical vignette designs on the spine. The titles in die-stamped gilt are also found on both the front panel and spine. There is a small area of discoloration on the front panel as if from a spill shown in the photo. The spine is a little darkened but completely readable. There is light rubbing at the spine tips and corners. The book has top-edge gilt. The original owner's signature and address is on the front free end paper. The pages are clean and bright throughout. The book also includes six full-page drawings with tissue guards. . There is an embossed cameo vignette of two sword-fighting men on each front cover and two crossed swords embossed on each spine. The books are tightly bound with only minor shelf wear. Some volumes have some sun fading on the front or rear panels. The spine cloth also shows some fading and light soiling although the gilt remains bright. There are no signatures of former owners. The pages have only light age toning and are mainly clean and bright. According to the Introduction the contents of these volumes are a series of stories based on historical records. They were originally published in Paris between 1839 and 1840 in eight volumes comprising eighteen titles all of which now appear in the present carefully translated text. The books include a colored illustration on the Half-Title pages as well as scattered black-and-white illustrations throughout. The report of a Parliamentary Commission gave rise to considerable suspicions against him, as it was conclusively shown that large sums of public money during his tenure of office as Treasurer of the Navy (1782-1783 and 1784-1800) had been applied to other uses than those of the navy. It is interesting to note that Dundas could have avoided these proceedings, had he submitted to criminal charges, but he chose to face impeachment, anticipating that his chances were better before his fellow Lords.
