brossura Finita la seconda guerra mondiale a Niscemi, come in altre parti della Sicilia, esplose il fenomeno del banditismo. Decine di persone guidate da Rosario Avila (detto Canaluni) e Salvatore Rizzo si diedero alla macchia, commettendo decine di delitti: estorsioni, rapine, sequestri di persona e tanti omicidi, terrorizzando la Sicilia orientale. Come per la banda Giuliano, i carabinieri furono le vittime preferite: il 16 ottobre 1945 in un agguato in contrada Apa ne uccisero tre, ma la strage più eclatante fu quella di Feudo Nobile con il sequestro di 8 carabinieri orrendamente massacrati in territorio di Mazzarino. L'eccidio - secondo la ricostruzione storica - fu perpetrato come rappresaglia per l'arresto di Concetto Gallo, capo dei Separatisti, dopo la famosa battaglia di Monte San Mauro tra l'esercito italiano e quello dei Separatisti. Quando le radici vengono divelte e la stessa terra non è più un bene primario, appare del tutto anacronistico rappresentare una commedia che ha perso la trama e perfino l'ordito.

Caccia grossa. Scene e figure del banditismo sardo
br. Edito nel 1900 e firmato con lo pseudonimo di Miles dall'autore Giulio Bechi, "Caccia grossa" rappresentò un vero e proprio libro scandalo. Tenente dell'Arma spedito nel 1899 in Sardegna per prender parte alle operazioni contro il banditismo volute dal governo Pelloux, Bechi diede un ritratto, tra cronaca e romanzo, della stagione forse più acuta della criminalità in Sardegna, quella di fine Ottocento. Uno sguardo esterno che ai lettori sardi parve viziato da un atteggiamento "coloniale", per l'approssimazione con cui si osservava la società isolana, assimilata al fenomeno del banditismo, escludendone la "società civile". Oggi si tende a dare un interpretazione più misurata del libro di Bechi (più volte riedito nel Novecento), per quanto in quelle pagine si andava minando la mitologia e la mistica del "bandito-eroe" e si proponevano soluzioni sociali che di fatto testimoniavano il superamento delle posizioni ottocentesche sulla "razza delinquente".

br. Tre ritratti di banditesse sarde vissute in periodi differenti. Donna Lucia Delitala (Nulvi - Settecento): a capo di un esercito personale imperversò nel nord Sardegna con stragi e razzie. Mai catturata, sparì improvvisamente nel nulla. Ma prima che la sua scomparsa diventasse leggenda ne trovarono il corpo arso nell'incendio di una sua casa, abbracciato stretto a quello di un uomo del quale non si seppe mai niente. Maria Antonia Serra-Sanna (Nùoro Ottocento): detta Sa reina (La regina) per il potere di morte e malefatte esercitato assieme ai fratelli latitanti, Elias e Giacomo. Nel 1899 è condannata a 20 anni di carcere. Recita la sentenza: "Triste figura di donna dal cuore perverso quanto i suoi fratelli, crudele con le vittime, eccitatrice e consigliera con ogni modo possibile dei banditi". Paska Devaddis (Orgòsolo Novecento): indicata fra gli assassini di Antonio Succu nell'ambito della faida (disamistade) che insanguinò dal 1905 al 1917 il paese di Orgòsolo, si diede alla latitanza e morirà di tisi a 25 anni, in una grotta del Supramonte, assistita dal fidanzato e dai banditi. Fu trovata sul tavolo di casa, vestita con il costume della festa.

N.p. Pennsylvania 1822. German-American murder poetry broadside recounting the life and death of the Prussian-Polish immigrant Joseph Müller who eloped to Lebanon Pennsylvania with his upper-class wife. Destitute and homesick Müller would eventually murder his pregnant wife and two children with an axe before hanging himself. Poem consists of sixteen stanzas of eight lines apiece and appears to have gone through as many as sixteen editions some spelling the name "Miller." A search in OCLC provides three separately catalogued records under the "Müller" spelling none conforming to the dimensions of this copy. Early American slang dictionary by a commissioner of the New York City police force about two-thirds of the work plagiarized from English sources though the author here claims that "Occupying the position of a Special Justice and Chief of the Police of the great Metropolis of New-York where thieves and others of a like character from all parts of the world congregate and realizing the necessity of possessing a positive knowledge of every thing connected with the class of individuals with whom it was my duty to deal I was naturally led to study their peculiar language" p. iv. The work appears to be aimed at readers of Matsell's newspaper the "National Police Gazette" advertized on the last leaf of text. A random dip into the early leaves reveals such unknown slang words as "Ard" hot though the OED only defines this as an obsolete form of "Hard." More recognizable listings appear under "Cow" a dilapidated prostitute while her "grease" is butter her "juice" is milk and "Cows and Kisses" applies to the ladies.
