C'è chi presenta le virtù o le debolezze delle donne, chi racconta i vizi o le qualità degli uomini, chi difende gli uni, chi difende le altre, c'è chi si chiede quale sia il comportamento migliore, chi medita sui drammi o sulle gioie dell'amore, dando così vita a un ricco mosaico di emozioni, di sentimenti e di reazioni proprie dell'essere umano.

L'idillio tenero e casto del Re Sole e Maria Mancini
brossura Non bellissima, ma con lo spirito di un angelo, Maria Mancini nipote del cardinale Mazzarino, conquista il cuore di Louis XIV, il Re Sole, che desidera farne la sua sposa. I due giovani sono inseparabili, vivono il loro amore puro, sostanzialmente platonico, secondo i dettami della letteratura cavalleresca del 1600. Ed è in quell'atmosfera idilliaca che matura e si consolida la loro profonda passione, ma il drastico divieto del Cardinale e della Regina-madre, ostacola il loro amore. Crudelmente mettono in atto un complotto per troncare quel legame che sta minando le trattative per la pace tra Francia e Spagna. Maria è esiliata nel castello di Brouage e Louis XIV deve piegarsi alla ragion di stato e sposare l'Infanta di Spagna, ma l'amore per la giovane italiana è ancora forte e prepotente, così la prega di rimanergli accanto come sua "favorita". Maria vorrebbe cedere alla passione, in fondo il Re le ha confermato il suo amore, ma lei non ama i compromessi, il suo carattere fiero e ribelle la trattiene, così dopo un momento di esitazione, spinta dall'orgoglio sceglie di lasciare per sempre la Francia.

Le lettere private indirizzate da Madame de Sévigné, alla figlia Françoise-Marguerite, dopo che si è allontanata da lei per raggiungere il suo sposo in Provenza, l'hanno resa, suo malgrado, una delle scrittrici francesi più autorevoli del genere epistolare del seicento. In uno stile libero, spontaneo, fuori dagli schemi prestabiliti, "a briglia sciolta", la marchesa ci offre un delizioso affresco della vita mondana e culturale parigina sotto il regno di Louis XIV. Ci racconta, ancora, il suo profondo affetto e la sua totale dedizione alla figlia; quel grande amore materno che non è mai venuto meno e che solo la morte è riuscita a troncare, come si legge in questa sua lettera: "Volervi bene, pensare a voi, commuovermi in ogni momento, interessarmi al vostro bene, provare le stesse preoccupazioni e le vostre pene, desiderare di subirle io, se fosse possibile; in una parola, comprendere profondamente chi si ama più di noi stessi, ecco come io sono".
