MDCIII." - VD17 23:230779Y. Die "Deploratio Lappianae gentis" (Die Beweinung des Volks der Lappen (i.e. Sami)) erschien zuerst in Genf 1520. - Am 3. Februar 1509 gelang es dem portugiesischen Admiral Francisco de Almeida in der Seeschlacht von Diu die ägyptisch-arabisch-indische Flotte zu besiegen. Diu wurde zusammen mit Daman und Goa Teil des portugiesischen Kolonialreiches. "Damião de Góis, auch: Damião de Goes, latinisiert: Damianus de Goes und Damiani a Goes, (geboren 2. Februar 1502 in Triana/Alenquer, Portugal; gestorben 30. Januar 1574 in Alcobaça) war ein portugiesischer Diplomat und Historiker. (...) Góis kam in seinem neunten Jahr an den Hof des Königs Dom Manoel, studierte in Padua, wurde 1523 portugiesischer Geschäftsträger in Flandern, später am Hof des Königs Siegmund von Polen in Vilnius, dann in Dänemark und Schweden. Jahrhundert. Er war Lehrer, Redner, Dichter und der erste Archäologe seines Landes, geboren in Évora 1500 , er starb in der gleichen Stadt am 9. Dezember 1573. (...) Er ist berühmt für seine Tätigkeit als Archäologe und insbesondere als Epigraphiker, als der er sowohl in Portugal als auch in Spanien arbeitete und insbesondere Inschriften auf Stein aus der Römer- oder Mittelalterzeit sammelte. 1553 veröffentlichte er in Portugiesisch 'A História de Antiguidade da cidade de Évora', und nach seinem Tod erschien sein großes historiographisches Werk in Latein, 'De Antiquitatibus lusitaniae' (Évora 1593).
