ill., br. "Vita Caroli" è l'autobiografia giovanile scritta in latino dall'imperatore del Sacro Romano Impero Carlo IV (1316-1378). Il libro esce in prima edizione italiana in occasione del VII centenario della nascita del grande re e imperatore boemo. Nato a Praga il 14 maggio 1316 da Elisabetta, l'ultima discendente della stirpe reale boema dei Premyslidi, e da Giovanni di Lussemburgo, re di Boemia, Carlo trascorse l'infanzia presso la corte del re di Francia, dove gli fu impartita una solida istruzione e un'educazione raffinata degna di un futuro sovrano. Richiamato in Boemia all'età di diciassette anni, fu coinvolto dal padre nelle dispute politiche e nelle lotte che imperversavano in Europa e in Italia, con l'obiettivo di consolidare il dominio della propria casata. Le vicende dell'infanzia e della giovinezza di Carlo sono narrate in questa singolare autobiografia, scritta con stile sobrio ed elegante, spaziando lungo un arco di tempo che va dal 1316 al 1346, anno della sua elezione a re dei Romani. Nel redigere questa "vita" l'intenzione di Carlo non è anzitutto biografica o autocelebrativa, bensì pedagogico-morale. Carlo vuole ammonire i suoi successori, mettendoli in guardia dai pericoli di una vita dissennata e dedita ai piaceri del mondo da egli stesso sperimentati da giovane; offre loro saggi consigli per regnare con giustizia e dedica alcuni capitoli all'interpretazione di pagine evangeliche nelle quali spiccano le parabole del regno. L’opera, dedicata a Carlo Alberto e lodata dal Cibrario e dal Manno, e pregevole anche perché l’autore non si limitò a riepilogare e a controllare dati già raccolti da altri storici, ma inserì anche notizie nuove desunte “dai conti degli ospizi e delle castellanie”. Splendido esemplare, freschissimo.
