Prehistoric Farmers of the Washita River Valley: Settlment Patterns and Subsistance: Patterns during the Plains Village
xiv162 pages with maps tables charts illustrations plates figures and appendices. Quarto 11" x 8 1/2' bound in original publisher's wrappers. Archaeological Research Survey Report 23. First edition. An intensive reconnaissance of a 15 mile long segment of the central Washita River Valley was conducted in the summer of 1983. The survey covered a one mile wide corridor from Lindsay in Gary County to Alex in Grady County Oklahoma. The project was designed to document the cultural resources in the area and provide a base line date for management of the resources. No particular interest was the number of distribution of Plains Village sites. No systematic surveys had been conducted in the valley yet many large villages were know for the area. This survey provided the first opportunity to examine the density and distribution of Plains Villagers in central Washita River Valley. Condition: Spine and back wrapper sunned some edge wear else a very good copy. University of Oklahoma Press paperback

Brooks, Robin
THE PORTLAND VASE The Extraordinary Odyssey of a Mysterious Roman Treasure
250 pages; Created for an emperor, exhumed from a burial ground, coveted, traded, smashed, restored, and stuffed full of incident and intrigue, the Portland Vase -- the most famous of all Roman antiquities -- has captivated everyone who has come into contact with it. Robin Brooks's The Portland Vase is a great romp through history with this fragile, enigmatic vessel, which has touched the lives of an array of compelling characters. Following the vase's journey across Europe over the centuries, we meet the notorious tomb-robber-cum-budding-archaeologist Fabrizio Lazzaro, who "discovered" the vase; Pope Urban VIII, who hoped to enhance his image by acquiring it; the Princess of Palestrina, who supported her nasty gambling habit by auctioning it off; the Duchess of Portland, who kept her ownership of the vase a secret; the ceramics genius Josiah Wedgwood, who devoted nearly a lifetime to trying to create a satisfactory reproduction; the Irishman who shattered it and the restorers who have since repaired it; and a host of other politicians, dilettantes, and scam artists. Their stories -- how they came by the vase, how they disposed of it, and how it affected them -- result in a narrative rich with passion, inspiration, and jealousy that spans more than two thousand years.

Dustjacket has edgewear with light chipping and a couple of small closed tears along bottom edge. ; The Memoirs of the American Academy in Rome Volume XXXVII; 431 pages; Cosa was a Latin colonia founded under Roman influence in southwestern Tuscany in 273 BC perhaps on land confiscated from the Etruscans. One of the last textual references to Cosa comes from the work of Rutilius Claudius Namatianus in his De reditu suo. In the passage 1.285-90 Rutilius remarks that by 416 the site of Cosa was deserted and could be seen to be in ruins. In the 20th century Cosa was the site of excavations carried out under the auspices of the American Academy in Rome initially under the direction of the archaeologist Frank Edward Brown. Excavations 1948-54 1965-72 have traced the city plan the principal buildings the port and have uncovered the Arx the forum and a number of houses. Unexcavated buildings include a bathing establishment but no trace of a theater or an amphitheater has been found. In the 1990s a limited series of excavations were carried out under the direction of Elizabeth Fentress then associated with the American Academy in Rome. This latter campaign aimed at understanding the history of the site between the imperial period and the middle agest. Sample excavations took place over the whole site with larger excavations on the Arx the Eastern Height and around the Forum. . Pennsylvania State University Press hardcover
