‎L'histoire de la découverte et de la restitution des textes anciens, inscriptions et manuscrits, auxquels nous sommes redevables de notre connaissance du passé. — "Si l'on voulait traduire exactement le titre américain, il faudrait dire : “Legs du passé”. Et pourtant le titre choisi par le traducteur indique mieux le contenu de l'ouvrage. Car c'est bien d'écrits qu'il est question, écrits sur papyrus, parchemins, tablettes d'argile, et de leur découverte. Découverte qui, à quelques exceptions près, a commencé au début du XIXe siècle et s'est poursuivie jusqu'à nos jours, en Egypte et dans le Proche-Orient. Il y a là le récit d'aventures prodigieuses. Celle, par exemple, des fouilles menées dans les décharges des anciennes villes égyptiennes amenant à jour des papyrus de toute espèce, celles qui ont permis de trouver le Sinaïticus ou les parchemins de la Geniza du Caire, et naturellement l'histoire des manuscrits de la Mer Morte, etc. La connaissance que l'Occident d'aujourd'hui avait de la vie et de la littérature de ces siècles lointains en a été bouleversée, miraculeusement enrichie. Mais plus que toute autre, c'est l'étude de l'Ancien et du Nouveau Testament qui a bénéficié de ces découvertes. L'auteur, dans son dernier chapitre a élargi le champ de son enquête à l'Asie et à l'Amérique précolombienne. On a comparé son livre à celui de Ceram, “Des dieux, des tombeaux, des savants”. A vrai dire, il en est la suite et le complément. C'est la même investigation du passé, passionnante pour les chercheurs. et pour le lecteur." (E.
