Matos Moctezuma, Eduardo (1940- )
La Piedra del Sol: Calendario Azteca
137 pages unpaginated with black and white and color plates facsimiles 6 plastic calender overlays appendix bibliography and index. Square folio 12" x 12" bound in grey cloth with silver lettering to spine and blind stamped with title in rectangular box to cover. Photographs by Salvador Guil'liem Arroyo. Forewords by Carols Salinas de Gortari and Maria Terresa Franco. First edition.Momentous work on the Aztec calendar stone with new interpretations by this leading scholar on the subject. Included is a review of the most relevant studies about the symbols and iconography contained in the Piedra del Sol and a comparison of it's history with that of La Coatlicue another important monolith of the Mexican culture that was also unearthed in 1790.The Aztec calendar stone is a large monolithic sculpture that was excavated in the Zócalo the main square of Mexico City on December 17 1790. It was discovered while Mexico City Cathedral was being repaired. The stone is approximately 12 feet across and weighs approximately 24 tons. Despite being known as a "calendar stone" modern archaeologists such as those at the National Anthropology Museum in Mexico City where the stone is housed believe it is more likely to have been used primarily as a ceremonial basin or ritual altar for gladiatorial sacrifices than as an astrological or astronomical reference.Condition:Jacket rubbed at spine ends else a near fine copy in like jacket. Mattson, John L
Puget Sound Prehistory: Postglacial Adaptations in the Puget Sound Basin with Archaeological Implications for a Solution to the "Cascade Problem"
John Lyle Mattson 1986. Limited edition copy No. 39 of fifty bound in blue cloth. Printed by University Microfilms International in Ann Arbor Michigan. This copy inscribed dated and signed by author on first free endpaper. A dissertation submitted to the faculty of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for author's PhD in 1985. This study synthesizes archaeological and environmental data for the postglacial Puget Sound Basin in order to redefine the region's cultural chronolgy. The Puget Sound basin resulted from massive glacial activity during the Pleistocene. Of particular concern to this study is evidence for human adaptations to changing Late Pleistocene and Holocene environments as indicated in technological subsistence and settlement shifts. xx 547pp maps including some topographical bibliography artifacts sites.
