"In 2004, the Istanbul Archaeological Museums started large-scale salvage excavations at Yenikapi within the scope of Marmaray-Metro projects. For the first time in Istanbul's history, archaeological excavations were conducted at one of its Byzantine harbors. When the excavations started, it was not known what this ancient harbor at the mouth of the Lykos (Bayrampasa) River would yield. At first, Ottoman remains were encountered in the excavation area, which covers over 58,000 square meters. Then, one of Constantinople's most important, and the world's best known harbors, the Theodosian Harbor, was reached only 1 meter below sea level. During the ongoing excavations, countless small finds and works of architecture were unearthed. In addition to wood and rope fragments, an unexpected find, a shipwreck, was found in 2005. As the excavation area expanded, a total of 37 ships dating between the 5th and 11th centuries were brought to light. Among the finds are very well preserved small and large merchantmen, as well as galleys from the Middle and Late Byzantine periods, which have been found for the first time. The Yenikapi wrecks constitute the largest collection of shipwrecks ever found together. Another surprise was waiting for the archaeologists 6,3 meters below sea level: Istanbul's oldest settlement. This Neolithic settlement dates back 8000 years and changes the writing of Istanbul's history. The footprints of Istanbulites who lived there thousands of years ago were found a few meters below. As the excavations go on uninterrupted, we have now acquired much new information about the city. This exhibition has been prepared in light of the finds from Yenikapi and their scientific study. It presents a section of the city from its first inhabitants to the present, and allows a multidimensional view of trade, seafaring, shipbuilding technology, and everyday life in Constantinople through four wrecks that were found together with their cargo. Since the establishment of the Attalid dynasty in the 3rd century bc the ancient city of Pergamon had been the capital and royal residence of the Attalid kingdom as well as a more or less independent Hellenistic polis with all its civic institutions. Consequently this book concentrates above all on Pergamon as a city and a royal capital, on its inhabitants and its sacred spaces, which feature so prominently in the urban fabric and include the Sanctuary of Athena, the Great Altar, the Asklepieion and the Red Hall (or Red Basilica). Although the chronological focus lies on the Hellenistic epoch, the articles in this volume cover a span from prehistory to the Byzantine period, as is essential if one is to understand the prerequisites for the city's development within its landscape, and also to appreciate how the legacy of Hellenism was handed down, changed, enriched and also destroyed in subsequent periods.

The archives of Bogazici University and Robert Collage are normally introduced at Columbia University's Rare Books and Manuscripts Library in New York. However, following the protocol signed between the two universities, digital copies of the documents were sent to Turkey. The archive that unearths over a century of history includes more than 200,000 documents. A huge selection of Ottoman-era magazines such as "Servet-i Fünun," "Asri Türkiye Mecmuasi," and Republican-era daily papers including "Cumhuriyet," "Milliyet," "Medan," "Baris" and "Aksam," as well as news and comments about Turkey in the international media such as The New York Times and National Geographic are open for visitors. The Exhibition not only features digital and hard copies of corporate documents, but also a selection from various archives such as the Adalet Agaoglu Research Chamber, the archive of well-known architectural historian and Bogazici University's founding chancellor Aptullah Kuran, the collection of Aziz Ogan, the Halet Cambel and Nail Cakirhan Archaeology, Traditional Architecture and History and Research Center Archive, the collection of former Foreign Minister Melih Rauf Esenbel, the Architectural Drawings Collection, which features drawings from the 1870s to the 1990s, the archive of the Scott Family and the Fuchs Culture and History Heritage Archive.

The exhibition aims to shed light on the cultural environment of the era following the signatures in the notebook that belong to the leading intellectuals of the period; including the famous archaeologist- spy Gertrude Bell, founder of the illustrated magazine Servet-i Fünun, Ahmed Ihsan, the crown prince of Bavaria Rupprecht and one of the greatest poetess of late Ottoman literature, Nigar Hanim among many others Nazli Hamdi was the youngest child of Osman Hamdi Bey and his wife Marie/Naile Hanim. Born in 1893, Nazli kept a guestbook between 1907 and 1911, for visitors to sign alongside a few kind words, much like her peers. It is this guestbook, bearing traces of over thirty individuals, that constitutes the backbone of the exhibition. The display attempts to present, identify, and relate to Nazli and Osman Hamdi, or even to one another, this mix of visitors; locals and foreigners, men and women, archaeologists, authors, artists, diplomats At the same time, it examines the story of a woman, grew up in a Westernized elite family, whose life extends from the late Ottoman period up through the early years of the Republic of Turkey.".

The name "Byzantine" was used for the first time by the German humanist and philologist Hieronymus Wolf in the 16th century for this empire, whose capital was moved from Rome to the city of Byzantion (with its new name, Constantinople) and became Christian over time. This term became widespread in the 19th century and later. However, the people that this book is about have always called themselves "Roman" and their state the "Roman Empire", while their neighbors also knew them as "Romans". The Byzantine Empire that ruled for about 11 centuries is one of the states whose reign lasted the longest in Anatolia. Anatolia was the geographical, demographic, and economic cradle of this predominantly Greek-speaking Christian population and its culture. The loss of Anatolia as of the 14th century led to the end of the empire in a short time. The cry of Emperor Theodore II Laskaris - "Holy land, my mother, Anatolia!" - in one of his letters from the mid-13th century shows how vital these lands were for the empire. This book aims to present both Byzantine culture and, more specifically, Byzantine Anatolia, through 32 articles by Turkish and foreign Byzantologists, who are experts in their respective fields. While the articles on political, bureaucratic, military, economic and religious life focus on the state apparatus and social structure, articles on literature, health, art, and material culture remains provide valuable information about daily life. In the articles that constitute the last part of the book, the reader is invited to a historical journey through different geographical regions of Byzantine Anatolia.
