Cahuachi in the Ancient Nasca World
xvi371 pages with charts tables figures plates maps bibliography and index. Quarto 11 1/4" x 8 3/4" bound in original publisher's black cloth with silver lettering to spine in original jacket. First edition.

Silverman shows that Cahuachi was much larger and more complex than portrayed in the current literature but that surprisingly it was not a densely populated city. Rather Cahuachi was a grand ceremonial center whose population size density and composition changed to accommodate a ritual and political calendar. Silverman meticulously presents and interprets an abundance of current data on the physical complexities burials and artifacts of this prominent site; in addition she synthesizes the history of previous fieldwork at Cahuachi and introduces a correct map and a new chronological chart for the Rio Grande de Nazca drainage system. On the basis of empirical field data ethnographic analogy and settlement pattern analysis Silverman constructs an Andean models of Nasca culture that is crucial to understanding the development of complex society in the Central Andes.

Condition:

A fine copy in like jacket. Izapa Relief Carving: Form Content Rules for Design and Role in Mesoamerican Art History and Archaeology
vii103 pages with figures tables and bibliography. Quarto 10 1/2" x 7 3/4" bound in original publisher wrappers. Dumbarton Oaks Studies in Pre-Columbian Art and Archaeology Number 27. First edition. Izapa is a very large pre-Columbian archaeological site located in the Mexican state of Chiapas; it was occupied during the Late Formative period. The site is situated on the Izapa River a tributary of the Suchiate River near the base of the Tacaná volcano the sixth tallest mountain in Mexico. The settlement at Izapa extended over 1.4 miles making it the largest site in Chiapas. The site reached its apogee between 600 BCE and 100 CE; several archaeologists have theorized that Izapa may have been settled as early as 1500 BCE making it as old as the Olmec sites of San Lorenzo Tenochtitlán and La Venta. Izapa remained occupied through the Late Classic period. The period of Izapa's height is still unknown due to little material for carbon dating so the issue is still widely debated. Descripcion de la Piedra del Calendario
236 pages with star charts figures plates and bibliography. Royal octavo 9 1/4" x 6 3/4" issued in wrappers. From the library of professor Anibal Buitrón. First edition.

The Aztec calendar was the calendar of the Aztec people of Pre-Columbian Mexico. It is one of the Mesoamerican calendars sharing the basic structure of calendars from throughout ancient Mesoamerica. This calendar is recorded as a carving on the Aztec Calendar Stone currently found in the National Museum of Anthropology and History located within Chapultepec Park Mexico City. The calendar consisted of a 365 day calendar cycle and a 260 day ritual cycle. These two cycles together formed a 52 year "century" sometimes called the "Calendar Round".The calendric year began with the first appearance of the Pleiades asterism in the east immediately before the dawn light. Every month had its name and the days of the month were numbered from one to twenty. The days of the last month Nemontemi were numbered from one to five. The box at the top of the stone contains the stone's year of creation in this case 1479 CE. The solar calendar of 365 days was inseparable from the Sacred Round or Sacred Almanac. The priests used this ritual calendar of 260 days called Tonalpohualli primarily for divinatory purposes. The method of naming the individual days consisted in the combination of twenty pictorial signs with the numbers one to thirteen. Each of the day signs also bears an association with one of the four cardinal directions. The 20 day signs are depicted in the calendar image to the right. They are arrayed in a circle surrounding the central face. The original Aztec Calendar is a 12' massive stone slab carved in the middle of the 15th century. Many renditions of it exist and have existed through the years and throughout Mexico. Historically the Aztec name for the huge basaltic monolith is Cuauhxicalli Eagle Bowl but it is universally known as the Aztec Calendar or Sun Stone. It was during the reign of the 6th Aztec monarch in 1479 that this stone was carved and dedicated to the principal Aztec deity: the sun. The stone has both mythological and astronomical significance. It weighs almost 25 tons has a diameter of just under 12 feet and a thickness of 3 feet. On December 17th 1790 the stone was discovered buried in the "Zocalo" the main square of Mexico City. The viceroy of New Spain at the time was don Joaquin de Monserrat Marquis of Cruillas. Afterwards it was embedded in the wall of the Western tower of the metropolitan Cathedral where it remained until 1885. At that time it was transferred to the national Museum of Archaeology and History by order of the then President of the Republic General Porfirio Diaz.

Anibal Buitrón Born 22 January 1914 in Otavalo Ecuador. Earned master's degree in anthropology at University of Chicago in 1950. Had a Gugenheim Fellowship in 1949. Co-author with the anthropologist John Coller of the well-known book The Awakening Valley 1949. During his career he worked with the Pan American Union of the Organization of American States and with UNESCO. In these positions he played important roles in the development of indigenista-oriented anthropology in Latin America. Retired to Watsonville California. Died sometime before 2006.

Condition:

Buitrón's initials on front wrapper. Soiled spine age toned with chips to head and heal edge wear else a good to very good copy.
