New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (29 x 23 cm). In Turkish. 502, [2] p., color and b/w ills. 101 yapi ve yer, Türkiye. This treatise on the built environment and consequentially man-made structures in Anatolia starts from Prehistory and focuses on the dimensions of space and time in particular. Contemporary approaches to cultural historiography not only aim to highlight the continuity of the dimensions of Space and Time but also to effectively examine and explain the pursuit of the 'environmental-formal-institutional-semiotic and evolutionary.'. This comparative study covers historic periods and epochs in Anatolia, the major determinant space, whose history is now proven by archaeological findings to start around 500,000 BC. The built environment in Anatolia has a history of nearly twelve thousand years; the contextual consistency methodology followed here exerts buildings to examine the continuous stages of this cultural history in detail. Limiting the extent to 101 buildings has facilitated focusing on the comparison of their functional and formal features in a historical context; these landmarks only become iconic and gain meaning in a mutual relationship with their immediate environment. This book is a compulsive experimental attempt in contemporary cultural historiography with the classifications and chronological order that have enabled the comparisonof functional and stylistic evolution. Le voyage a Nemrud Dagi d'Osman Hamdi Bey et Osgan Efendi, 1883.
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (28 x 22,5 cm). In French. 144 p. B/w ills.
2. Manisa Çevre Günleri.
As New English Paperback. Pbo. Mint. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Turkish. Color and b/w ills. 144 p. Manisa Tarzan, the most symbolic person of Manisa City who was living in Spylus Mt. and the Mount Spylus: The ancient Mount Sipylus (Ancient Greek: ???????) (elevation 1,513 m/4,964 ft), is a mountain rich in legends and history in Manisa Province, Turkey, in what used to be the heartland of the Lydians and what is now Turkey's Aegean Region. Its summit towers over the modern city of Manisa as well as over the road between Izmir and Manisa. The contiguous mass of Mount Yamanlar, also overlooking the Gulf of Izmir, has often been considered as an extension of Mount Sipylus massif with which it shares much history, although it is actually an extinct volcano and a distinct geographical formation. A full faced statue of Cybele carved in rock, dated to the late-Hittite or Luwian period in late second millennium BCE, is found near Mount Sipylus, several kilometers east of Manisa. The sculpture is known as Tas Suret in Turkish (meaning "Stone Figure") and sometimes referred to as such also in international literature. The mountain was considered a favorite haunt of the mother goddess. According to an old myth the sculpture was carved by Broteas, Tantalus' ugly son. According to the Byzantine commentator John the Lydian, the unknown author of the 7th century BCE epic poem, the Titanomachy, placed the birth of Zeus, not in Crete, but in Lydia, which should signify Mount Sipylus. The names "Sipylus" or "Sipylum" are mentioned by Pliny the Elder, supported by other sources, as the site of a very celebrated city called "Tantalis" or "the city of Tantalus", by the name of its cited founder. Presumably located on or very near the mountain, the city's ruins were reportedly still visible around in the beginning of the Common Era. The same Tantalus is famed through Greek mythology by the accounts relating that he had cut up his son Pelops and served him up as food for the gods. His son Pelops is said to have migrated later to the Peloponnese, named after him, and to have founded a kingdom. Tantalus' daughter was the tragic Niobe, who is associated with the "Weeping Rock" (Aglayan Kaya in Turkish), a natural formation facing the city of Manisa. Later in ancient times, Mount Sipylus, located in Lydia, (Ancient Greek: ???????), rose above the site of Magnesia ad Sipylum (the southern portion of modern Manisa), whose existence is traced back as far as the 5th century BCE. Magnesia was located along the Hermus River (Gediz River) on the plain below and was the scene of the defeat of Antiochus III "the Great" by the Romans, at the Battle of Magnesia in 190 BCE. Smyrna lay nearby.

Restoration and Conservation Project of Urartian Jewellery Collection of Rezan Has Museum.= Rezan Has Müzesi Urartu Takilari Restorasyon ve Konservasyon Projesi.
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (30 x 25 cm). In English and Turkish. 100 p., color ills. Jewelleries such as pectorals (breastplate), medallions, beads, amulets, neck rings, ornamental pins, fibulae, armlets, bracelets, rings and furthermore, the most comprehensive Urartian belt collection of Turkey with approximately 70 belts will reveal the mysterious thoughts, religious beliefs and traditions of the Urartian society. Among the most important factors in the development of the Urartian art of jewellery is the presence of rich mineral deposits of Eastern Anatolia and the profitable use of these deposits by the Urartian jewellery masters. Gold, silver, lead, iron and particularly copper deposits in the region were effectively mined for the first time by the Urartians. With the mission and vision it has upheld since its inauguration, Rezan Has Museum has arduously strived to preserve the historic assets of our land, which has been home to countless civilizations, and to ensure that they are transmitted to future generations. Our most important mission is to safeguard the Museum's jewellery collection of the Urartian civilization, which reigned over Anatolia for 250 years and to entrust future generations with a collection preserved at least its present condition. Each new study on these treasures to be handed down from one generation to the next will shed light not only upon our past but upon our future as well.".

Antioch mosaics. A corpus.
New English Original bdg. HC. Large 4to. (32 x 28 cm). In English. 320 p., color ills. "The book includes the most important Antioch mosaic pavements displayed in the Hatay Archaeological Museum in Antakya, Turkey, seventeen different institutions in the USA and the Louvre. The mosaics were brought to light in and around Antioch on the Orontes (Antakya), Seleucia Pieria (Çevlik) and Daphne (Defne) in 1932-37. As a group, the Antioch mosaics demonstrate a remarkable continuity with the Hellenistic artistic tradition as seen in the preservation of classical subjects and decorative devices, such as the illusionistic treatment of the inhabited vine scrolls or ribbon borders. The common use of multiple borders to frame figural panels at Antioch is also reminiscent of the framing of Hellenistic emble-mata, or portable panels prepared in workshops and then inserted at the sites. The three-dimensional treatment of interiors and landscapes, the naturalistic representation of the human anatomy, and the variety of colors employed for the Antiochene compositions, indicate a dependence on painting styles. Such skill in the production of stone 'paintings' effectively denies the solidity of the floor and tricks the eye of the viewer, not to mention their physical relationship to the room itself. Finds from nearby sites (Apamea, Zeugma, Shahba-Philippopolis, and Palmyra) are similarly 'traditional' and point to the existence of a 'school' of eastern art beyond that of the Antiochene workshops. Such illusionism reaches the height of fashion during the Severan period in Antioch.".

ANNELIESE PESCHLOW-BINDOKAT.
Herakleia on the Latmos. City and environment. A Carian Mountain landscape.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21,5 x 12 cm). In English. 262 p., color and b/w ills. Our Archaeological guides are written by well-know archaeologists in the hope that they might evoke the spirit of these sites for anyone interested in the remains of Anatolian civilizations. Illustrated with beautiful photographs, equipped with helpful plans and drawings, they are essential resources for travelers in Turkey. 'Who crosses the area of the Maeander, is at his east side threatened by the dark zig zag top of the Latmos, a granite mountain created by eruptions.Inhospitable and poor, this mountain, separated from the thoroughfare by a lake, has always been the most desolate area of the region. In the unparalleled wildness of jumbled rocks, the Latmos is one of the greatest nature experiences a traveller can be granted.' (M. Schede,1936). In this mountain region, which was so aptly described in his time by M. Schede, in the past years numerous, largely unkown settlement traces have been found, which are decisively characterised by the rock landscape of the Latmos. Mount Latmos was one of the sacred mountains of Anatolia; its top was the residence place of the highest god, the Weather God. Among the numerous recent discoveries the Prehistoric rock paintings with their unique imagery are undoubtedly the most important. In the Karadere Cave, presumably the central sanctuary of the Weather God, even the modern visitor becomes aware of the connection between the rock paintings and the mountain top. Dr. Anneliese Peschlow-Bindokat, scientific researcher at the German Archaeological Institute- Berlin (DAI), has been the director of the Latmos Project for more than 20 yeras.
