‎ROMAN COINS AND PUBLIC LIFE UNDER THE EMPIRE E. Togo Salmon Papers II‎

‎Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; 0.72 x 9.48 x 6.2 Inches; 216 pages; Roman coins often shed light on Roman public life and society through the legends, portraits, and images they bear. The papers collected in this volume were originally presented at the Second E. Togo Salmon Conference on Roman Studies. The eight contributors are specialists in Roman coins or Roman history and in the relations between them. Coins are a unique source of information about the Roman world. In the case of the Roman Empire they were issued by or with the approval of the ruling power. The representations and legends they show therefore present an official view of contemporary affairs. The coins themselves, minted for official purposes such as paying the army, when studied carefully can help reconstruct official policies. They can also occasionally reveal what monuments now lost may have looked like. It is not infrequent to come across pleas that the ancient historian should make more frequent use of numismatic evidence. These essays make clear that efforts are being made both by numismatists and by historians to bring the two disciplines together. At the same time the papers reveal that the task is by no means a straightforward one. The survival of Roman coins is variable, and so attempts to reconstruct the size and distribution of issues calls for skilled and experienced analysis. This collection of papers provides evidence for the kind of deductions that the historian may make from Roman coins as well as the illustrations of the pitfalls that await the unwary. Those interested in Roman history, amateur coin collectors, and professional numismatists will all find much here to widen their knowledge of the public context of Roman coins. ‎THE ANCIENT GREEKS A Critical History‎

‎Minor shelfwear. Small chip along foreedge. Minor edgewear. ; 1.46 x 9.2 x 5.98 Inches; 736 pages; An esteemed teacher offers a major reassessment of the history of Greece from prehistoric times to the rise of Alexander. This is a work of prodigious scholarship written in grand style. John Fine surveys the archaeological work that has revealed so much about the civilization of Crete and Mycenaean Greece, and discusses the age of colonization during which Greek colonies were established from the Crimea to the Nile, from the Caucasus to Spain. Analyzing social and economic developments, as well as foreign and inter-city affairs, he assesses the history, culture, and democracy of Athens, and Sparta's institutions and military exploits; recounts the Greeks' relations and then war with the Persian empire; details alliances, struggles, and the varying fortunes of the Greek city-states; and relates the rise of Macedon. Fine treats the Greeks' story in the context of events elsewhere in the eastern Mediterranean. Throughout he indicates the nature of the evidence on which our present knowledge is based, masterfully explaining the problems and pit-falls in interpreting ancient accounts. The Ancient Greeks is a splendid narrative history and a refreshing reinterpretation that will please students of ancient history, and everyone interested in early civilizations.‎

‎RECHTS UND LINKS Untersuchungen Über Bewegungsrichtung, Seitenordnung Und Höhenordnung Als Elemente Der Antiken Bildsprache‎

‎Minor creasing along top of DJ. Minor rubbing to DJ. "‎

‎THE SO-CALLED PELEUS AND THETIS SARCOPHAGUS IN THE VILLA ALBANI‎

‎Iconological Studies in Roman Art , No Iconological Studies in Roman Art , No 1; 0.9 x 8.9 x 6 Inches; 179 pages; In this iconological study, the author demonstrates the invalidity of the current interpretation of the relief on the so-called Peleus and Thetis sarcophagus in the Villa Albani in Rome, an interpretation which goes back to Winckelmann. By applying a modern art-historical method, he arives at a fundamentally new interpretation. It becomes clear that the splendid sarcophagus in the Villa Albani is highly characteristic of ‘academic’ art of the Hadrianic era. The unique nature of the representation on the Albani sarcophagus, which consists mainly of allegorical figures, makes it an excellent point of entry for the interpretation of mythological scenes applied in a funerary context.‎

‎Former owner's embossed seal on ffep and titlepage. Light foxing to textblock. Dustjacket has edgewear with chipping and small tears now protected in mylar. Light browning to DJ. DJ is price-clipped. ; This book is written in the belief that a proper understanding of Greek civilization in antiquity requires some knowledge of its background of seafaring. A knowledge of nautical practice is required for an understanding of some passages of Greek poetry and prose writing, and for a correct interpretation of numerous historical events. This is an attempt at a thorough study of the evidence, both literary and archaeological. Modern reference books tend to repeat the misconceptions of nineteenth-century scholars. In contrast, Mr Morrison and Mr Williams have written a scholarly and scientific study of the subject. They collect in this volume evidence for Greek oared ships between 900 and 322 BC. The book is primarily a catalogue of decorated pottery and quotations from literature and from naval inventories. The pottery is illustrated by diagrams and plates; and the quotations are given in full. ; 356 pages‎

‎THE SANCTUARY OF HEMITHEA AT KASTABOS‎

‎DJ is price-clipped. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; 23pp of photos, 78 figures. "This is an account of the excavation of a Greek sanctuary in the south-west corner of the mainland of Asia Minor opposite Rhodes--once known as the Carian Chersonese. The excavations took place in 1959-1960. This is the first Greek temple of any size uncovered in that part of Asia Minor, and the discovery of the site of Kastabos, whose existence was known from book V of Diodorus' world history, has entailed the re-siting of several ancient towns in the region. The sanctuary itself, whose main buildings date from c. 300 B. C. , was dedicated to the Goddess Hemithea. It adds to our knowledge of a special sort of Greek shrine which was popular in the early Hellenistic age and is a perfect instance of a religious gathering place designed for a short, well attended festival. The excavations show that, although it was an Ionic temple, the style of the great contemporary temples in Ionia (such as that at Ephesus) has been modified and the design is somewhat similar, in plan and proportion, to that of the temple of Epidaurus. In particular, the discovery of a decorative screen with little shrines round the temple area throws new light on Greek architectural complexes." ; 180 pages‎
