TRAJAN'S COLUMN AND THE DACIAN WARS
DJ is price-clipped. DJ has minor shelfwear with one repaired tear. ; The spiral frieze of Trajan's Column provides an extraordinary record of the Dacian wars, events of outstanding importance that took place when Rome's military power was at its peak. Indeed, the rich detail on the Column highlights the paucity of extant written sources. Rossi appraises the Column as a social and historical document, sketches the historical and geographical background of the wars, and gives essential information on the Roman armed forces and their Dacian opponents. ; Aspects of Greek and Roman life; 240 pages

ROMAN LONDON
Minor shelfwear. Minor bumping to corners. ; London has recently witnessed one of the most intense programmes of archaeological excavation ever to have been mounted; few ancient cities have received such detailed attention. This book draws extensively on the results of the latest work to present a challenging new account of the rise and fall of one of the principal towns of the Roman empire. An economic and social history of the city, its suburbs and surrounding territories is reconstructed from the archaeological evidence. London is traced from its origins as a mercantile settlement, established to service and supply the victorious Roman legions, through the years of prosperity at the heart of the growing new province and into a period of recession as imperial growth ceased. The story concludes in the fifth century with the disappearance of the Roman city beneath fields and gardens. ; The Archaeology of London; 152 pages

PHILIP OF MACEDON
Dustjacket has edgewear with chipping and small tears. Upper Corners are bumped. ; In autumn 1977 an unplundered royal tomb containing works of art of astounding richness and exquisite craftsmanship was discovered by Professor Manolis Andronicos at Vergina in Macedonia. The excavator's suggestion that the tomb's occupant was probably Philip, son of Amyntas, king of the Macedonians and Captain General of the united Greeks, created an understandable sensation, and aroused world-wide interest in this extraordinary personality: father of Alexander the Great, one of the greatest Macedonian kings, and also one of the most important political figures of antiquity. In response to this interest nine scholars, all eminent specialists in the history of 4th century Greece, describe the tumultuous career of Philip, re-evaluate his personality and re-examine his political achievements in the light of the recent discoveries. The book closes with an account of the excavation of the fabulous treasures of the royal tombs at Vergina by Professor Andronicos. ; 254 pages

Chipping to wraps. Tears along bottom of spine. Browning to wraps. ; Beiträge Zur Assyriologie Und Vergleichende Semitische Sprachwissenschaft V, 4; 118 pages; In this early study of the sources then newly recovered from Sippar, Friedrich offers a monumental amount of information. Sippar had yielded thousands of clay tablets and these were still being published in this period. Friedrich begins with the dated sources from the reigns of Sin-umballit, Hammurabi, Samsu-iluna, Abiesuh, Ammi-ditana, and Ammi-zaduga. This is followed by the sources that are not dated, those approximately assigned and those not assigned at all. Texts are given in transliteration and translation, and commentary is included. The next section concerns the representation from seal impressions, those categorized by gods and those categorized by epic. A comparison of names and an overview of published cuneiform texts also play a role in the discussion. The texts are presented in line drawings and photographs of cylinder-seal impressions conclude the work. With illustrations throughout, this brief study is an essential source for Old Babylonian resources located at Sippar.

THE LIFE OF THEMISTOCLES A Critical Survey of the Literary and Archaeological Evidence
Dustjacket is protected in mylar. One closed tear along front corner of dustjacket. Rubbing to DJ. Minor rubbing to boards. ; 250 pages; Themistocles (ca. 525 BC-460 BC) was a leader in the Athenian democracy during the Persian War. Themistocles favored the expansion of the navy to meet the Persian threat and persuaded the Athenians to spend the surplus generated by their silver mines on building new ships - the Athenian navy grew from 70 to 200 ships. Despite the importance of this enigmatic figure in Greek history, our knowledge still largely comes from the ancient accounts of Herodotus, Thucydides, and Plutarch. Podlecki provides the first modern comprehensive assessment of Themistocles, based on literary and archaeological evidence.
