"In 2004, the Istanbul Archaeological Museums started large-scale salvage excavations at Yenikapi within the scope of Marmaray-Metro projects. For the first time in Istanbul's history, archaeological excavations were conducted at one of its Byzantine harbors. When the excavations started, it was not known what this ancient harbor at the mouth of the Lykos (Bayrampasa) River would yield. At first, Ottoman remains were encountered in the excavation area, which covers over 58,000 square meters. Then, one of Constantinople's most important, and the world's best known harbors, the Theodosian Harbor, was reached only 1 meter below sea level. During the ongoing excavations, countless small finds and works of architecture were unearthed. In addition to wood and rope fragments, an unexpected find, a shipwreck, was found in 2005. As the excavation area expanded, a total of 37 ships dating between the 5th and 11th centuries were brought to light. Among the finds are very well preserved small and large merchantmen, as well as galleys from the Middle and Late Byzantine periods, which have been found for the first time. The Yenikapi wrecks constitute the largest collection of shipwrecks ever found together. Another surprise was waiting for the archaeologists 6,3 meters below sea level: Istanbul's oldest settlement. This Neolithic settlement dates back 8000 years and changes the writing of Istanbul's history. The footprints of Istanbulites who lived there thousands of years ago were found a few meters below. As the excavations go on uninterrupted, we have now acquired much new information about the city. This exhibition has been prepared in light of the finds from Yenikapi and their scientific study. It presents a section of the city from its first inhabitants to the present, and allows a multidimensional view of trade, seafaring, shipbuilding technology, and everyday life in Constantinople through four wrecks that were found together with their cargo. The fascinating pictorial scenes on pieces of a bronze shield from a room on the west side of the Haldi Temple in the Upper Anzaf Fortress, discovered in 1995, add greatly to our knowledge of Urartian religion and art. During the fire caused by a Scyhtian attack in the late seventh century B.C. objects and weapons of bronze and iron stored in this small room became molten and distorted, a large portion turning to slag. In recent years conservation of this mass of molten metal, weighing more than 13 kilograms, a number of bronze and iron objects and weapons have been recovered and preserved for the benefit of science. In particular, seven votive rings of cast bronze with cuneiform inscriptions from the co-regency of King Ispuini, Menua and Inuspua has added much to the poorly known political history in the early period of the Urartian Kingdom. Most of the fragments of bronze sheet bearing pictorial scenes come, it has been realized from the same large shield. Conservation of the bronzes is still continuing. Conservation a 78 cm. long piece of the shield over the last three years has, however, revealed scenes of great interest that shed significant new light on our understanding of the art and, particularly, the religion of Urartu. A row of 12 gods are depicted in the same sequence as the pantheon of gods in the Meher Kapi rock inscription which provides much detailed information on the religion of Urartu. Nothing similar to the pantheon in the Meher Kapi inscription, where each god is gven his divine attributes and local characteristics, has previously been found. In its 20 anniversary Arkeoloji ve Sanat is pleased to share with its readers this valuable study which, we believe, makes an important new addition to Anatolian archaeology.

Aphrodisias was a free and autonomous city within the Roman province of Asia, in Western Turkey. It was best known for the sanctuary of its patron goddess, Aphrodite, and for its marble sculptors. The community prospered under the early and middle Roman empire (first-second centuries AD), when it built a complete set of marble buildings that made the town a proper city in ancient eyes. Aphrodisias sheds valuable light on interaction between Greek and Roman identity, the functioning of empire, religious conflict and accommodation,and transition from antiquity to the Middle Ages. Aphrodisian sculptors are known to have worked abroad on prestigious commissions, for example, at Hadrian's villa at Tivoli. The surviving body of sculpture is rich and varied. There are statues of gods, heroes,emperors, benefactors, philosophers, and athletes, as well as mythological groups, decorativefigures, and ornamental and figured relief sculptures. Many of the key pieces occupy key positions in the history of Roman art. The sculpture of the city is a legacy of unrivalled importance in this field. The archaeology of Aphrodisias gives a fuller, more vivid picture of later classical art in its ancient context than is possible at any other site. The book which is 47.8 by 35cms, is 240 pages. 175 full-colour plates, and plans with drawings give an amazing panorama of the marble city and its sculptures.
