‎MELIH ARSLAN.‎

‎The Museum of Anatolian Civilizations. The guide to Ankara throughout the ages.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 208 p., color ills. The earliest archaeological finds in the region of Ankara date to the Paleolithic period. Intensive work on the Paleolithic took place particularly during the early years of the Turkish Republic. The vicinity of Maltepe and its Coal Gas Factory (Maltepe Havagazi Fabrikasi), the work fields of the Institute of Agriculture (Ziraat Enstitüsü), Gazi Institute of Education (Gazi Egitim Enstitüsü), Ludumlu, Egmir and Mogan Lake, Gavurkale, Etlik, Keçiören and its vicinity, Haci-Kadindere, Ergazi, Etiyokusu, Güdül, the village of Ilhan, Dikmen and Çaldag, Hüseyin Gazi, Çubuk Valley, the village of Ivedik, Etimesgut, Eryaman, Çayyolu (specifically Çayyolu Sondurak) and Karaköprü, Sincan, Karasal, Sindiran-Yaniktarla, the vicinity of the villages Peçenek and Dodurga; they are sites yielding Paleolithic period chipped stone tools. These stone tools display a number of characteristic features that help date these artifacts to various periods between the Lower Paleolithic and Epipaleolithic periods. Research publications indicate that most of these stone tools were not found in situ but were moved from their original spots. Ankara and its vicinity were intensively inhabited during the Paleolithic period. Only a single site has so far been located, however, for the following Mesolithic/Epipaleolithic period. Kansu and Ozansoy collected numerous microliths at Macunçay; they have been identified as Mesolithic. There is, as of yet, no excavated Neolithic period site in Ankara and its vicinity. There are difficulties identifying and analyzing the Chalcolithic period in the region of Ankara. The problem for the Neolithic period applies here also. There is, as of yet, no excavated site clearly dating to the Chalcolithic period. There are a few settlements that can merely be dated to the Late Chalcolithic/Early Bronze Age Transition period. A number of important sites dating to the Early Bronze Age II and III (2500-2000 BC) have been identified in the province of Ankara. The first of these is Etiyokusu, just near the Stream of Çubuk (Çubuk Çayi). The excavations were headed by S.A. Kansu in 1937. Three levels of occupation were unearthed in the settlement of Etiyokusu. The finds of Etiyokusu indicate that it was a village settlement built upon stone foundations and mud brick walls, dating to the Early Bronze Age II-III. Furthermore, structures with circular stone foundations (a well-pit or barley silo) have been identified. There are also the settlements Ahlatlibel and Koçumbeli very near Ankara central, vital for understanding the Early Bronze Age in the region. In 1933, H.Z. Kosay identified.‎

Jewel and jewellery culture in Anatolia throughout history.= Tarih boyunca Anadolu'da taki ve kuyumculuk kültürü. It is observed that, along history, cultures and levels of development of societes have reflected on the jewellery pieces, accessories and designs that were used. For that reason, we believe that examining the historical development of jewellery business and jewellery design on this piece of land will give us an idea about our past, judgement values and the utilization process of gold and silver as well as it will shed on the light on the future of the society and the sector and add value to it. In this period where ccorporate social responsibility is as important as the corporate identities of companies, to be involved in this publications, second of which has been prepared by IKO, since the very beginning has become o part of the mission of Lidya (Lidia) jewellery which has taken its name from Anatolian history. We believe that sharing information will unite our sector on a common ground and make us stronger and will be able to form the concept of 'Golden Furute'.‎

‎A Hittite chrestomathy.‎

‎Very Good English Original cloth bdg. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 230 p. A Hittite chrestomathy. Sturtevant was an American linguist. Besides research on Native American languages and field work on the Modern American English dialects, he is the father of the Indo-Hittite hypothesis, first formulated in 1926, based on his seminal work establishing the Indo-European character of Hittite (and the related Anatolian languages), with Hittite exhibiting more archaic traits than the normally reconstructed forms for Proto-Indo-European. He authored the first scientifically acceptable Hittite grammar with a chrestomathy and a glossary, formulated the so-called Sturtevant's law (the doubling of consonants representing Proto-Indo-European voiceless stops) and laid the foundations to what later became the Goetze-Wittmann law (the spirantization of palatal stops before u as the focal origin of the centum-satem isogloss). Karatepe: A priliminary report on a new Hittite site.= Karatepe: Yeni bir Eti harabesi (Ilk rapor). (Publications of the Institute for Research in Ancient Oriental Civilisations No. 1). "The exploration in Anatolia undertaken in summer 1945 by the Institute for Research in Ancient Oriental Civilisationsof the University of Istanbul (the staff of the expedition, consisting of Prof. Dr. H. Th. Bossert, his assistants Dr. Halet Çambel, Nihal Ongunsu and Muhibbe Darga, were accompanied by Bay Ali Riza Yalgin of the Direction of Antiquities from ankara), led us along the road over the Taurus pass connecting Kayseri with south-eastern Anatolia and North Syria over Gezbel, Saimbeyli, Feke, Kozan and Ceyhan. Our aim was to determine as far as possible, the anient Hittite road at the time of the new Hittite Empire. On our way we seized every opportunity of getting information from the inhabitants about possible Hittite monuments in the vicinity. In this way we collected a number of pieces of information which seemed worth while examining. Among others was a rumour about a supposedly Hittite lion-relief worked on the rock, somewhere in the mountainous region east of Kadirli. It being already very late in the season, we were unable to check this information right away and had to postpone the matter until next year...". This rare first preliminary report on Karatepe, that this discovery of a Hittite site and of an Old-Semitic inscription. Signed and inscribed by Bossert to Bahadir Alkim.‎

Tabula Peutingeriana (= The Peutinger Map), also referred to as Peutinger's Tabula or Peutinger Table, is an illustrated itinerarium (an ancient Roman road map) showing the layout of cursus publicus, the road network in the Roman Empire. The map is a 13th-century parchment copy of the Roman original, and covers Europe (without the Iberian Peninsula and the British Isles), North Africa, and parts of Asia (including the Middle East, Persia, and India). The original map which the surviving copy is based on is thought to date to the 4th or 5th century and was itself based on a map prepared by Agrippa during the reign of the emperor Augustus (27 BC-AD 14). Named after the 16th-century German antiquarian Konrad Peutinger, the map is today kept at the Austrian National Library in Vienna (Spurce: Wikipedia).‎

‎ATHANASIOU A. ANGELOPOULOU.‎

‎Nikolaos Kavasilas Khamaetos. I zoi kai to ergon autou. Analecta Vlatadon 5. Edited by Panayotis C. Christou.‎

‎Fine Greek, Modern (post 1453) Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Greek (Modern, 1453-). 147, [1] p., 13 b/w plates. Nikolaos Kavasilas Khamaetos. I zoi kai to ergon autou. Analecta Vlatadon 5. Edited by Panayotis C. Christou. Nicholas Kabasilas or Cabasilas, (1319-1392) was a Byzantine mystic and theological writer. Kabasilas is a saint within the Orthodox Church. His feast day is June 20. The Roman Catholic Church uses extracts from his Life in Christ as readings in the Liturgy of the Hours (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of the Fifth Week of Easter in Year II of the two-year cycle for the Office of Readings). He was on intimate terms with the emperor John VI Kantakouzenos, whom he accompanied in his retirement to a monastery. He was once thought to have succeeded his uncle Neilos Kabasilas as archbishop of Thessalonica; however contemporary records of that see do not show Nicholas as serving in the capacity of archbishop. It is more likely that he served as a priest at the Mangana Monastery at Constantinople. In the Hesychast controversy he took the side of the monks of Mount Athos and Saint Gregory Palamas. Biography of Kavasilas. Scarce.‎
