As a wedding present, Hardie chose a visit to Konya (ancient Iconium) from the options offered her by her husband, and the couple spent the spring of 1913 there together. Frederick had long been interested in the interplay of Christianity and Islam within the Turkish Empire, and he was gradually to make this a central part of his work. The Haslucks were based in Athens and, over the next four years, had the opportunity to travel widely together in the southwest Balkans. The city of Assur, and the kingdom with its name derived from this city, were established by the early 2nd millennium BC along the bank of the Tigris River in northern Iraq, and continued their existence almost uninterrupted for about 1400 years until the end of the 7th century BC. Assyrian king lists provide a chronology of kings with their capital cities. Albeit with some uncertainties, the sequence begins with the names of kings who reigned at the city of Assur (Qal'at Sherqat) for more than 1000 years and continues in chronological order with kings who resided in the capital cities of the Neo-Assyrian Period, namely Kalhu (Nimrud), Dur-Sarruken (Khorsabad) and Nineveh (Koyunjuk). In this regard, among all states known in ancient Near Eastern history, the Assyrian Kingdom is one of those which maintained its political regime and its institutions of government for the longest time. The political model of governance that had begun to take shape in Mesopotamia during the 4th millennium BC in the lands of Sumer and Akkad matured under Assyrian rule throughout a long historical process of political development. The model of royal sovereignty and its associated institutions of governance and palace architecture, developed by the Neo-Assyrian Kingdom which built upon the experiences and traditions of deep-rooted Mesopotamian civilizations, were adopted and imitated in multiple ways by all kingdoms and empires which followed Assyria in the Near East.

Chr. in der Nähe der alten persischen Residenzsstadt Kelainai (heute Dinar, Provinz Afyon) errichtete Tumulusgrab von Tatarli ist fur das Kulturerbe der Turkei von unschätzbarem Wert, da seine holzerne Grabkammer vollflächig mit qualitätvollen persisch beeinflussten Holzmalereien uberzogen war - eine heute fast gänzlich verlorene Kunstgattung. Das Grab wurde 1969 geplundert, die besterhaltenen Balken herausgesägt und ins Ausland geschafft. Die restlichen Holzbalken wurden ins Archäologische Museum von Afyon gebracht. Vor sechs Jahren wurden vier fehlende Balkenteile in einem Museum in Munchen (Deutschland) wiederentdeckt. Einmal der Nachweis der Zugehorigkeit dieser Stucke mit dem Tatarli-Grab erbracht, starteten Latife Summerer und Alexander von Kienlin, in enger Zusammenarbeit mit dem Ministerium fur Kultur und Tourismus der Republik Turkei, ein Projekt diese vor vierzig Jahren zerstorte Grabkammer so vollständig wie moglich wiederaufzubauen, und auf diese Weise sie fur kunftige Generationen zu bewahren. Mit der Restaurierung der großten aus der Antike erhaltenen Holzmalereien und der Ruckfuhrung aller bereits außer Landes gelangten Teile der Grabkammer ist dieses Projekt nicht nur fur die Wissenschaft ein unschätzbarer Gewinn, sondern leistet auch einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Bewahrung der turkischen Kulturschätze. Mit Forderung der Agentur Istanbul 2010 Kulturhauptstadt Europas und des Auswärtigen Amtes der Bundesrepublik Deutschland wird diese einzigartige bemalte Holzgrabkammer mit ihren farbenfrohen Bildern von Krieg, Kult und Mythos restauriert und zum ersten Mal im Museum Vedat Nedim Tor des Kulturzentrums der Yapi Kredi zwischen dem 17. Starting from Spring 2014, VEKAM organizes an international symposium once a year on Cultural Encounters in Anatolia in the Medieval Period. After the Georgian Empire and the Ilkhanids this year's theme is on "Italians in Anatolia during 12th and 15th Centuries" (Istanbul excluded). The symposium held on May 13th, 2016 at the premises of VEKAM in Ankara/ Turkey. "The Mongol victory over the Seljuks in 1243, the Mongol sack of Baghdad in 1258, which led to the commercial rise of Tabriz, and the rapprochement between Cilician Armenia and the Mongols resulted in a shift of the trade route across Anatolia. Ayas in Cilician Armenia replaced Antalya as its Mediterranean outlet. Mongol rule also furthered trade between Tabriz and the Black Sea port of Trebizond. It is along these itineraries that Italian merchants travelled to and from Mongol territories, as illustrated by the journeys of the father and uncle of Marco Polo and of Marco himself in the second half of the 13th Century. At Ayas on the shore of Cilicia Venice received trading privileges in 1261, well after Genoa's first treaty with the Armenian kingdom (1201). The Venetian element in Ayas' foreign merchant community grew with the general increase in the intensity of trade and with the inception of the state galley run or incanto. But international trading activity at Ayas, and the use of the tracks to Sivas, seems to have been cut short by the Mamluks' acquisition of the port in 1337...".

The work at and around Dana Island (Pityoussa / Pityussa) yielded very important results with regards to archaeology. There is a modern lighthouse to warn seafarers about the shoal just off shore in the west. This shoal is about 50 cm. below the water surface and not visible in stormy weather, thus posing a great threat for seafarers. To the south-east of the shoal is a recently sunken modern ship at a depth of 25-35 m. covering a wide area at the bottom. Based on numerous wreck remains around the shoal, it is thought that this modern shipwreck currently conceals many other archaeological remains. In the vicinity of the lighthouse are numerous amphorae on the bottom and buried underneath the sand. The most significant find from this region is an iron ram used on ancient warships. Detailed underwater exploration around the island attested wrecks along the east, south and west coasts as well as anchors datable to the Bronze and Iron Ages and the Roman and East Roman periods. The most important outcome is the identification of structural remains under water by the coast on the mainland side of the island. Some of the remains belong to walls fallen because of an earthquake on the land. Some others are beaching sites hewn into rocks in the water (or on land but then submerged as the water levels rose)"...
