GREEK OARED SHIPS 900-322 B.C.
Cambridge University Press. 1968. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. Former owner's embossed seal on ffep and titlepage. Light foxing to textblock. Dustjacket has edgewear with chipping and small tears now protected in mylar. Light browning to DJ. DJ is price-clipped.; This book is written in the belief that a proper understanding of Greek civilization in antiquity requires some knowledge of its background of seafaring. A knowledge of nautical practice is required for an understanding of some passages of Greek poetry and prose writing and for a correct interpretation of numerous historical events. This is an attempt at a thorough study of the evidence both literary and archaeological. Modern reference books tend to repeat the misconceptions of nineteenth-century scholars. In contrast Mr Morrison and Mr Williams have written a scholarly and scientific study of the subject. They collect in this volume evidence for Greek oared ships between 900 and 322 BC. The book is primarily a catalogue of decorated pottery and quotations from literature and from naval inventories. The pottery is illustrated by diagrams and plates; and the quotations are given in full.; 356 pages . 0521057701 . Cambridge University Press hardcover

THE SANCTUARY OF HEMITHEA AT KASTABOS
Cambridge University Press. 1966. Hardcover. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. DJ is price-clipped. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing.; 23pp of photos 78 figures. "This is an account of the excavation of a Greek sanctuary in the south-west corner of the mainland of Asia Minor opposite Rhodes--once known as the Carian Chersonese. The excavations took place in 1959-1960. This is the first Greek temple of any size uncovered in that part of Asia Minor and the discovery of the site of Kastabos whose existence was known from book V of Diodorus' world history has entailed the re-siting of several ancient towns in the region. The sanctuary itself whose main buildings date from c. 300 B. C. was dedicated to the Goddess Hemithea. It adds to our knowledge of a special sort of Greek shrine which was popular in the early Hellenistic age and is a perfect instance of a religious gathering place designed for a short well attended festival. The excavations show that although it was an Ionic temple the style of the great contemporary temples in Ionia such as that at Ephesus has been modified and the design is somewhat similar in plan and proportion to that of the temple of Epidaurus. In particular the discovery of a decorative screen with little shrines round the temple area throws new light on Greek architectural complexes."; 180 pages . Cambridge University Press hardcover

Pastoralist Landscapes and Social Interaction in Bronze Age Eurasia

CONDITION: The book itself is in fine condition and comes in fine dust jacket. More specifically: Boards have no wear rubbing or soiling. Dust jacket is in excellent condtion. . Dust jacket is protected in clear plastic sleeve. Pages are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. ABOUT THIS BOOK: Offering a fresh archaeological interpretation this work reconceptualizes the Bronze Age prehistory of the vast Eurasian steppe during one of the most formative and innovative periods of human history. Michael D. Frachetti combines an analysis of newly documented archaeological sites in the Koksu River valley of eastern Kazakhstan with detailed paleoecological and ethnohistorical data to illustrate patterns in land use settlement burial and rock art. His investigation illuminates the practical effect of nomadic strategies on the broader geography of social interaction and suggests a new model of local and regional interconnection in the third and second millennia B.C.E. Frachetti further argues that these early nomadic communities played a pivotal role in shaping enduring networks of exchange across Eurasia. Quantity Available: 1. Drawing on research carried out since "Reading the Landscape" was originally published in 1981 Muir provides a synthesis of thinking about the history of the key elements in England's rural landscape. As well as covering familiar topics such as villages woodlands and roads he explores how landscape features are human ideas made manifest - boundary walls and hedges reflect territoriality churches and henges reflect belief and castles and hillforts reflect status and the need for defence. Helaine Silverman
Cahuachi in the Ancient Nasca World

xvi371 pages with charts tables figures plates maps bibliography and index. Quarto 11 1/4" x 8 3/4" bound in original publisher's black cloth with silver lettering to spine in original jacket. First edition.

Silverman shows that Cahuachi was much larger and more complex than portrayed in the current literature but that surprisingly it was not a densely populated city. Rather Cahuachi was a grand ceremonial center whose population size density and composition changed to accommodate a ritual and political calendar. Silverman meticulously presents and interprets an abundance of current data on the physical complexities burials and artifacts of this prominent site; in addition she synthesizes the history of previous fieldwork at Cahuachi and introduces a correct map and a new chronological chart for the Rio Grande de Nazca drainage system. On the basis of empirical field data ethnographic analogy and settlement pattern analysis Silverman constructs an Andean models of Nasca culture that is crucial to understanding the development of complex society in the Central Andes.

Condition: A fine copy in like jacket.
University of Iowa Press hardcover
