Land Transfers: a Case Study [Hardcover]
Over the years, and specifically since the enactment of land ceiling laws in a number of States in the country in the 1950s, agricultural land has changed hands in a manner that needs a searching enquiry not only for academic purpose but the planners and rural development agencies as well. Land transfer is of utmost significance as it offers vital clues to the emerging agrarian structure. Land alienation is nor only uprooting hundreds of thousands of small farmers but also adding to the population explosion in the urban areas which are already tottering under the weight of too much population. What are the factors behind land alienation? Which classes are losing land and which classes are gaining it? Why is landlessness on the increase? Is it due to immiserisation or has the diversification of the economic abetted the process. All these and other questions have been analysed in this empiricial study in the context of dynamics of new agricultural technology in a backward state like U.P. with its marked regional diversities. About The Author:- Dr. Kripa Shankar, obtained his D.Phil, degree from University of Allahabad and has been an activist in the Kisan movement. He continued with his academic pursuits, doing empirical studies on rural poverty, development and growth process. He has been contributing articles to various journals and presenting papers to seminars and conferences. Currently he is in the faculty of Govind Ballabh Pant Social Science Institute, Allahabad. Sven Hedin Foreword By K. Vatsyayana
Trans Himalaya Discoveries and Adventures in Tibet Volume 3 Vols. Set [Hardcover] Volume 3 Vols. Set
"My long journey backwards and forward over the Trans-Himalaya cannot be regarded as more that a cursory and defective reconnaissance of a country hitherto unknown. It is easier to go to Lhasa with a force armed to the teeth, and shoot down the Tibetans like pheasants if they stand in the way, than to cross Tibet in all direction for two long years with four governments and all the authorities of the land as opponents, twelve poor Ladakis as companions, and not a single man as escort. It is no merit of mine that I was long able to maintain a position which from the first seemed untenable. The same lucky star looked down, as often before, on my lonely course through vast Asia, since I first took up my pilgrim staff. “Go, then, out into the world thou ringing and sonorous name for one of the world’s mightiest mountain systems, and find thy way into geograp hical text-books and remind children in the schools of the snow-crowned summits on the Roof of the World, among which the monsoon storms have sung their deafening chorus since the beginning. As long as I live, my proudest memories-like royal eagles, will soar round the cold desolate crags of the Trans-Himalaya.” About The Author:- Sven Hedin’s journey through the Himalayas was on of the most hazardous but at the same time most fascinating exploration of his time. His three-volume reportage of the journey remains a classic of travel writing to this day. Besides writing, Hedin had meticulously drawn pictures of what he saw and encountered during his journey to Tibet, which again are classic works of art. This publication contains the entire travelogue of Hedin. With an entourage of helpers, Hedin set out to his destination-Lhasa. He began interestingly, from India. From Simla to Leh to Lhasa the caravan journeyed through the inhospitable Himalayan track and reached the destinations in to Nepal, the sight to picturesque Mansarovar, the holy Lamas in caves and monasteries, the search for the sources of Indus and Brahmaputra- the mosaic is arrestingly charming. A gem of a travelogue, Trans-Himalaya is sheer delight to read, and contains a mine of information. Kishori Lal Sarkar
The Hindu System of Religious Science and Art [Hardcover]
The words-science and art, are not used in a uniform way. Sometimes the word are is used in contrast with nature, whereas the term science is applied to the elaborations of laws of nature. Keeping this interpretation in mind Sarkar suggested that art is conceived as something which is human, but not natural but as a matter of fact the human is also natural. The author has discussed the various interpretations of religious science and art in this book and has organized all the materials into nine chapters, besides a brief introduction. Kishori Lal Sarkar made a praiseworthy attempt to explain the Hindu religion, both as a science and art as early as in 1910 when religion was considered to be the subject matter of orthodox pandits and classical intelligentsia. About The Author:- Late Kishori Lal Sarkar, was a great indologist and practiced law at the Calcutta High Court, and wrote this valuable book “The Hindu System of Religious Science and Art,” which was published as early as in 1910 from Calcutta. The Great Divide: Muslim Separatism and Partition
It takes a fresh look at the perennial problem of the divide between the Hindus and Muslims and the partition of India it led to. Historical reasons have been analysed in the study in considerable depth and conclusions have been drawn. It debunks the efforts made by some apologists of Jinnah to shift the blame for partition on to others' shoulders and delineates the growh of separtism from the earliest times. The doctrine of two nations led to the creation and division of Pakistan and the inevitable division of the Muslims of the sub-continent into three nations. Historical forces which helped in the creation of a separate nation have been studied. About The Author:- An experienced media man scholar and author, S. C. Abolghasem Dadvar
Iranians in Mughal Politics and Society: 1606-1658 [Hardcover]
Historians have taken into account the Iranians presence in 17th century India in the context of their studies of the Mughal state and its apparatus. They do not, however, examine in depth the Iranians share in the formation of this apparatus. Many key questions pertaining to the migration of the Iranians in Mughal India remain unclear. This book examines the regions of Iran wherefrom the migrants came, the type of the people who migrated to India and the place where they finally settled. A major concern of the present work is to study and highlight the reasons and factors that determined the Iranians migration to India. Why did Iranians people migrate to India, why not to Central Asia? What were the factors which influenced and shaped the Mughal policy towards the Iranian nobility? Was it guided by the interests of the Mughal state? If yes, to what extent? Did religion exert any influence on the migration of Iranians into India, and or on their relationship with the Indian Mughal rulers? The book is an attempt to answer these questions. The study is based on a large number of sources, including Persian chronicles and tazkiras, both Iranian and Indian, and European accounts and travelogues. K.M. Ashraf
Life and Conditions of the People of Hindustan [Hardcover]
The author has made a successful attempt to script a social and political life of the Hindustan of the period stretching from 1200-1550 A.D. The author very convincingly brings home the impact of the invasion of the Muslim on the ancient Hindu order which was almost completely destroyed. The book draw a clear picture of how the early Muslim invaders succeeded in leaving foundations which proved strong enough for the later Mughals in raising their glorious edifice. Thereby, the author proves that how Akbar as well as his successors followed the pattern their Turkish and Afghan predecessors had shaped for them.
