‎Antioch: The Lost Ancient City‎

‎, Princeton University Press, 2000 Softcover, 253 pages, 23cm x 30.5cm, English text Fine copy. ISBN 9780691049335.‎

‎This lavish exhibition catalog brings to life Antioch, the magnificent city known for its Hellenic culture and luxurious way of life, once ranking with Rome, Alexandria, and Constantinople as one of the great metropolises of the Roman and early Christian world. Located in what is now southern Turkey, Antioch was the capital of Ancient Syria, a vital marketplace at the crossroads between East and West. It was here that St. Paul preached to the first gentile community to be called "Christians" and where a Greek-speaking Jewish culture flourished alongside Roman, Egyptian, and Near Eastern cults. A large middle-class shared in the wealth and culture of the city, and art abounded in numerous forms, especially in beautiful mosaics depicting scenes from mythology and everyday life. Featuring 118 objects excavated from the city's ruins, all reproduced in full color, Antioch: The Lost Ancient City recreates the spatial sensation, visual splendor, and cultural richness of this urban center. Devastated by an earthquake in 526 C.E., as well as by fires, plagues and invasions by Persians, Antioch survived only in memory through ancient written accounts until the 1930s, when excavations revealed a wealth of finds from the private houses of its inhabitants, including a large cache of floor mosaics. In addition, archaeologists found several churches, a stadium, a circus, a theater, and several baths. This catalog displays and describes the excavated artifacts--mosaics, sculpture, glass, metalwork, coins--within their architectural and cultural contexts, thereby evoking the street life as well as the domestic lives of Antioch's citizens. Among the treasures are the mosaics The Drinking Contest between Dionysos and Herakles and The Judgment of Paris, the Antioch chalice, gold jewelry from Syria, bronze tyche figurines, and mosaics of river and sea deities. Antioch emerges as a compelling model of a melting-pot city, one that challenges our own notions of civic community and diversity. The contributors are Susan Boyd, Bernadette Brooten, John J. Dobbins, Anna Gonosov , Susan Ashbrook Harvey, Florent Heintz, Sandra Knudsen, Christine Kondoleon, Michael Maas, William Metcalf, James Russell, Sarolta Tak cs, Cornelius Vermeule III, and Fikret Yegul.‎

‎Clashing Religions in Ancient Egypt Exploring Different Layers of Religious Beliefs‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2025 Hardcover 268 Pages: Size:178 x 254 mm Illustrations:22 b/w, 19 col., 4 tables b/w. Language English NEW. ISBN 9782503614168.‎

‎What did ?religion? mean for the Ancient Egyptians? Was the state involved in acting as a unifying and founding force for Egyptian religion or can we still identify some clashes between different religious practices? To what extent did different rituals, practices, and beliefs intersect and merge across time and space? Such questions have long preoccupied scholars working in the field, but they have often only been considered through the lens of official, ?centralized? texts. Yet increasingly, there is an acknowledgment that such texts require calibration from archaeological data in order to offer a more nuanced understanding of how people must have lived and worshipped. The chapters gathered in the volume aim to offer a thorough exploration of Egyptian cultural and religious beliefs, and to explore how these impacted on other areas of daily life. Contributors explore the connection between religion and central power, the paradigms around burial and access to the afterlife, the interconnections between religion, demonology, magic, and medicine, and the impact of multicultural interaction on the religious landscape. What emerges from this discussion is an understanding that the only truly identifiable clash is that between modern, Eurocentric perspectives and the views of the ancient Egyptians themselves. ‎Gli acquedotti dell'antica Roma‎

‎, Quasar, 1991 Green faux-cloth binding under illustrated dustjacket, 408 pages, 22 x 28,5 cm, Italian text. *very fine condition.‎

‎Leuven, Leuven University Press, 1993 Softcover, 277 pages, 27.5 x 21 cm, English text. *Fine condition. ISBN 9789061865742.‎

‎Sagalassos, once the metropolis of the Western Taurus range (Pisidia, Turkey), was only thoroughly surveyed in 1884 and 1885 by an Austrian team directed by K. Lanckoronski. In 1986-1989 this work was resumed by a British-belgian team co-directed by Dr. Stephen Mitchell (University College of Swansea) and by Prof. Dr. Marc Waelkens (Catholic University of Leuven). In 1990 Sagalassos became a full scale Belgian project and a leading centre for interdisciplinary archaeological and archaeometrical research. Due to its altitude, the site is one of the best preserved towns from classical antiquity, with a rich architectural and sculptural tradtion dating from the second century BC to the sixth century AD. From early Imperial times untiel the early Byzantine period a complete range of coarse and red slip wares was produced locally. Excavations are concentrated on qthe upper and lower agoras to document the plitical and commercial life in the town and also in the area where a late Hellenistic fountain house, which stll functions to date, and a Roman library were discovered. Major efforts are undertaken to restore the excavated monuments in their old glory. Several disciplines integrate the town again within its ancient environment and document the central role which Sagalassos played in the area.‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller95, 2025 Paperback, 420 Pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:81 b/w, 35 col., 20 tables b/w., Language(s):English, Italian, French. *new ISBN 9782503616605.‎

‎The body or relics of a saint could attract divine protection on the community and the place where they were kept. If, in some cases, the monasteries were structures of assistance to sanctuaries of certain notoriety, starting from the 7th century, they increasingly played the role of protagonists, autonomously managing the devotional activities derived from the acquisition or translation of relics. The need to preserve the isolation of the 'clausura' and to manage, at the same time, an increasing flow of pilgrims led these monasteries to build new spaces for prayer, communion and assistance. This book includes the Proceedings of the International Conference held in Naples (Italy) on November 28-29, 2022. The Conference - organized, as part of a Marie-Curie research project, by the Fondazione San Bonaventura with the contribution of the Italian Ministry of Culture - brought together historians, archaeologists, and art historians to discuss the theme of spatial articulation of monasteries chosen as places of pilgrimage during the Early Middle Ages in Western Europe. From this interdisciplinary discussion, exciting insights have emerged on aspects of particular relevance, such as the organization of the funerary space and interaction between monks and laypeople, the elements of balance or clash between 'clausura' and hospitality and the comparison between male and female monasteries as devotional centers. ‎The expansion of Rome into northwestern Europe brought with it the presence and the increased usage of coinage both within the empire and in the Barbaricum. Coin Finds and Monetization in the Roman Northwest presents a study of coin finds and the monetary economy of northwestern continental Europe over much of the Roman period (c. 50 BC?AD 274). One of the largest datasets of coin finds ever assembled is deployed to analyze distribution patterns and fluctuations over time and space. It is clear that the Roman state made a concerted effort to manage coinage and the monetary economy during its rule in northwestern Europe, to the extent that was possible. Regionality is, however, a key feature of the coined monetary economy that resulted from deliberate action or the state?s inability to respond to demand, underscoring how centralized and empire-wide factors had an impact in the study region. Publication of this book has been aided by a grant from the von Bothmer Publication Fund of the Archaeological Institute of America. ‎This issue of Journal of Urban Archaeology combines an open call for papers with a special thematic section focused on the entanglement of political control and colonialism with the archaeology of urban sites in the Near East and Egypt during the late Ottoman and the Mandate periods. The articles in this special issue examine how earlier colonial and orientalist approaches informed and shaped archaeological fieldwork, and created persistent legacies in the study of ancient urban sites, through the use of specifi c case studies. Through this approach, these articles demonstrate how the critical re-examination of legacy data can structure nuanced narratives, and together, the authors point the way forwards for dismantling current paradigms around the urban archaeology of the region. ‎The ancient city of Neapolis (modern Kavala, Greece) was founded by Thasos in the seventh century BCE at a strategic location where the Thracian hinterlands meet the Aegean Sea. The patron deity of this North Aegean polis was Parthenos (the Maiden), a goddess often associated with Artemis and known to us through epigraphic and archaeological evidence. Her sanctuary came to light in the twentieth century, during rescue excavations, and yielded numerous finds, most of which date from the Archaic period. This edited volume draws together the material evidence from the Sanctuary of Parthenos, with a particular focus on the ceramic wares, stone inscriptions, and small finds from the site. Published as a counterpart to an earlier publication in this series, Amalia Avramidou?s monograph, The Sanctuary of Parthenos at Ancient Neapolis (Kavala): Incised and Painted Ceramic Inscriptions from the Sanctuary and in Aegean Thrace, the essays gathered here nonetheless form a stand-alone volume that sheds light on both the importance of the site as a place of cult, and more broadly the role that it played within the commercial networks and cultural dynamics of the Aegean. ‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2026 hardvack, Pages: 594 pages, Size:170 x 240 mm, Language:English. NEW. ISBN 9789603711032.‎

‎Summary Roman Names on Crete: Immigration, Enfranchisement, Integration utilizes the evidence of Roman names in order to document and analyze a wide range of Cretan responses to the Romans and the Roman empire, from influence and citizenship to integration. Three foundational chapters examine the social and historical significance of different Roman onomastic formulae, and the geographical and chronological distribution of Roman names attested for Crete and the Cretans. Three more chapters capitalize on the testimony of the onomastic record to assess systematically the social and historical significance of different types of Roman names: non-imperial and imperial family names (nomina) and personal names (cognomina). A final chapter treats the combined evidence of the preceding three chapters for the immigration of Romans and Italians to Crete, the enfranchisement and integration of Cretans into the Roman Empire, and the integration of Romans into Cretan society. An extensive, annotated catalog presents the evidence utilized for the analysis of the social and historical significance of Roman names attested on Crete and for Cretans; before each non-imperial family name, textboxes assemble the evidence for its (un)commonness and significance in the Mediterranean-wide Roman world. TABLE OF CONTENTS LIST OF FIGURES Acknowledgements Introduction: A catalog of names I. A spectrum of names II. Na mes in a landscape III. A chronicle of names IV. Non-imperial nomina V. ‎Funeral Rites of the Yotvingians Excavations from a Cemetery in North-eastern Poland‎

‎, brepols, 2026 Hardback, Pages: 353 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:57 b/w, 227 col., 27 tables b/w. Language(s):English, Polish. *NEW. ISBN 9782503618593.‎

‎Summary The burial rites of the Yotvingians, a people who inhabited the Suwa?ki region of north-eastern Poland, were until recently almost completely unknown to archaeologists. For a long time, it was considered that the funeral rites of this people could not be identified archaeologically, and while finds such as settlement complexes have been excavated, related necropolises were not found. This changed with the identification of the Mosi??ysko burial ground in the Szurpi?y settlement complex, dated to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries AD, which is the first sepulchral site of the early medieval Yotvingians to have been discovered and surveyed using state-of-the-art archaeological methods. The results from these excavations are presented for the first time in this monograph. The excavations at the site yielded traces of collective cremation burials discovered scattered on the surface of the site, accompanied by stone structures. The equipment of the deceased, intentionally destroyed and burnt, included numerous fragments of ornaments, parts of costume and tools, as well as sporadically occurring weapons and horse riding gear. In addition to finds of artefacts characteristic of the early medieval Suwa?ki region, it was also possible to distinguish interregional varieties akin to finds from Sambia, Curonia, and other lands inhabited by the Balts. The results of this ground-breaking find, documented here, have now made it possible to expand research into the Yotvingians, and to identify similar sites. ‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2026 Hardback, Pages: 160 p.Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:37 b/w, 25 col., 1 tables b/w. Language:English NEW. ISBN 9782503618517.‎

‎Summary The site of San Vincenzo al Volturno, lying in a mountain valley of Molise, southern Italy, might by today?s standards be considered rather remote. In the late eighth and ninth centuries, however, it was one of the most famous Benedictine monasteries of Latin Christendom, home to a thriving centre of leaning and located strategically on the borders of Lombard and Frankish territory. This came to an end on 10 October 881, when an Arab warband sacked the monastery, leaving it in ruins. Now, thanks to extensive archaeological excavations over forty years, a new story can be told about this important site, a narrative that reveals the art, architecture, and archaeology of this monastic city as it thrived during the Carolingian renaissance, as well as the devastating effects of the Arab attack. Through the lens of these excavations emerges a unique narrative for the making of the Middle Ages in Europe. TABLE OF CONTENTS List of Illustrations Preface Chapter 1. ‎Dacia Ripensis Topografia e cristianizzazione di una provincia danubiana nella Tarda Antichit‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2025 Hardback, Pages: 406 p. Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:140 b/w, 16 col. Language(s):Italian, English. NEW. ISBN 9782503609997.‎
