Magness, Jodi
The archaeology of Qumran and the Dead Sea Scrolls
Blue illustrated glossy dj; 238 pg. ; illustrations ; 24 cm.; bibliographical references and indexes "The Dead Sea Scrolls are among the most interesting and important archaeological discoveries ever made, and the excavation of the Qumran community itself has provided invaluable information about Judaism and the Jewish world in the last centuries B.C.E. Like the Dead Sea Scrolls, however, the Qumran site continues to be the object of intense scholarly debate. In a book meant to introduce general readers to this fascinating area of study, veteran archaeologist Jodi Magness here provides an overview of the archaeology of Qumran and presents an exciting new interpretation of this ancient community based on information found in the Dead Sea Scrolls and other contemporary documents. Magness's work offers a number of fresh conclusions concerning life at Qumran. She agrees that Qumran was a sectarian settlement but rejects other unconventional views, including the view that Qumran was a villa rustica or manor house. By carefully analyzing the published information on Qumran, she refines the site's chronology, reinterprets the purpose of some of its rooms, and reexamines the archaeological evidence for the presence of women and children in the settlement. Numerous photos and diagrams give readers a firsthand look at the site. Written with an expert's insight yet with a journalist's spunk, this engaging book is sure to reinvigorate discussion of this monumental archaeological find." óPubisher. || Qumran community. Wood, Michael
The Road to Delphi: Scenes from the History of Oracles
For thousands of years, and in many different cultures, cities, and states, individuals have consulted oracles in time of need. In this fascinating exploration of the history and enduring popularity of oracles, Michael Wood examines how they are interpreted and why.The inherent ambiguity of many oracular pronouncements and the ingenuity and tendentiousness of many readings of them form the basis for Woods analyses of oracles, both real and imagined. Using examples from actual oracles at Delphi, Dodona, and in pre-Hispanic America to fictional-but influential-oracles in literature from Oedipus to Macbeth, Wood combines storytelling and commentary to provide an entertaining and concise account of humanitys persistent faith in signs. He also looks at later instances of oracles, arguing that consultations have evolved in many ways over the years, and that echoes and survivals of old practices in modern literature and popular culture.continue to exert an important influence over human civilization. Lively, engaging, and remarkably revealing, The Road to Delphi shows an ancient art at work in many times and places, and invites us to think again about the ways in which we deal with our longing for the certainties we know we cant have.271p. bibliography. index Book

Courtesans and Fishcakes : The Consuming Passions of Classical Athens
The luxury of the ancient world is legendary, but the Athenian reputation is sober because this wealthy, successful city-state spent all its money on the conspicuous consumption of ephemeral things. Their consuming passions for food, wine and sex drove their society, as well as generating the rich web of privilege, transgression, guilt and taboo for which they are remembered today. Using pamphlets, comic satires, forensic speeches - from authors as illustrious as Plato and as ignored as Philaenis - as source material - this study combines a traditional classicist's rigour with an appreciation of the new analytical techniques pioneered in gender and cultural studies to provide an alternative view of ancient Athenian culture and to bring its reality into a focus easier on the modern eye. A fascinating investigation of how ancient Athenians looked at food and women and sex..372p. plates. bibliography.index. Book

The Athenian Trireme : The History and Reconstruction of an Ancient Greek Warship
"Shortly before the successful launch of the "Olympias" a reconstructed Greek warship, the first edition of "The Athenian Trireme" was published, providing historical and technical background to the reconstruction of the ship in a Greek shipyard. Since then 5 seasons of experimental trials have been conducted on the ship under oar and sail, and the lessons learned have been supplemented by historical, scientific and physiological research over the last 15 years. for this second edition the text has been recast and a number of substantive changes have been made in the light of the sea trials and new research. In addition there is an entirely new chapter which describes the trials of Olympias in detail, reports the performance figures obtained and outlines the changes which the authors would wish to incorporate in any second reconstruction. There are 19 new illustrations, including 11 photographs of Olympias at sea demonstrating features of the design which could only be represented by drawings in the first edition. 319p. illus.bibliography.index Book

The Cruise of the Dolphin
"This is the log book, written as fiction but based on fact, of the voyage of an ill-fated Roman galley from Delos in the Aegean to Massalia, the modern Marseilles, in about 145 B.C. The wreck, with the remains of ots cargo of 10,000 amphorae and pottery from Megara was found in 9 fathoms of water . outside Marseilles . [by] Commandant Cousteau and his team. From the evidence provided by the surviving fragments of the hull and anchor, marks on the pottery and customs seals on the amphorae, the author has been able to retrace the voyage . Further clues allowed the owner of the Dolphin to be identified as Markos Sestios . 160p. illus plates, maps and diagrams Book
