TAKEKO HARADA, FATIH CIMOK.
Roads of Ancient Anatolia. Vol. I.
New English Original bdg. HC. Large 4to. (32 x 28 cm). In English. 240 p., ills. "The book brings together over 250 different ancient roads, rock-cut passes, road inscriptions, milestones, bridges and ruts from Phrygia to the Euphrates, the Euphrates region and beyond, and the Black Sea region. Anatolia entered into the historical era during the latter part of the Bronze Age, shortly before the foundation of the Hittite Kingdom. The pre-Hittite cuneiform tablets uncovered at Karum of Kanes (Kültepe) mention ass caravans moving back and forth between Mesopotamia and central Anatolia, a trip of some 1,000 km. Although these routes can tentatively be reconstructed there is no information about the roads. In a letter recovered from Kültepe, a merchant in tin asks his agent to divide the merchandise into small pieces, hide it into his clothes and bring it to town by the 'smugglers' track'; something usually done to avoid import taxes. His warning implies the existence of better roads than mountain tracks as early as the 1800s BC. For the journey between home and Anatolia the Assyrian merchants mostly employed asses or porters, and paved roads were not necessary. Thus the established caravan routes of the time, controlled by the local authority, were no more than roads in general sense. Still, the repeated use of the safest and easiest routes probably created more or less established caravan trails. The passes through high mountains and crossing points of the Euphrates were not many. Such sites were probably known and used by all the caravans.". Over 250 different ancient roads. Rock-cut passes. Road inscriptions. Milestones. Bridges. Ruts. Over 330 Colour Pictures. Volume 1: Western Anatolia from the Sea of Marmara to the Miditerranean / Southern Anatolia from Pamphylia to the Orontes.

Icons in Turkey.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Large 8vo. (23 x 21 cm). In English. 128 p., many color ills. "This volume brings together 86 Greek and Russian icons from Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya Museum) in Istanbul, Antalya Archaeological Museum, Antalya, Sinop Museum, Sinop, and Tokat Museum, Tokat. Two mosaic icons, from the Virgin Pammakaristos, which are kept in the Church of St George's at Phanar (Fener) in the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate are also included. Compared to the interest that the surviving Byzantine architecture, wall paintings and mosaics receive from Turkish and foreign scholars, the icons in Turkey are obviously neglected. There is almost no record of the icons kept in private collections. Those kept in museums need cleaning, restoration and study. Another more general reason is that icons have been regarded less important than Byzantine wall paintings or mosaics and their study has been overshadowed by them. It is only recently that a more careful study of icons began which approached them as a type by themselves, despite their close relationship close relation ship with the other arts. As far as the provenance of the icons included in this volume is concerned, some of those kept in the Ayasofya Museum are definitely known to have been brought from Russia by immigrants in the reign of Sultan Ahmet I (1603-17).".

Mosaics of Istanbul.
New English Original bdg. HC. Oblong large 8vo. (23 x 23 cm). In English. 72 p., color ills. "This volume brings together some of the most important surviving mosaic panels in Istanbul from the Great Palace, Istanbul Archaeological Museums, Hagia Sophia, the Virgin Pammakaristos and St Saviour in Chora. Except for the few panels brought from elsewhere and now kept in the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, all of these mosaics were made in Istanbul, known then as Constantinople. Chronologically, the earliest of these mosaics is from the late Roman period and the latest from the early fourteenth century. Even if they are far from giving the development of the art of mosaic in the capital of the Byzantine Empire these pavements reflect the importance that was afforded to this art.".

Paintings of the Dark Church.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (31 x 23 cm). In English. 111 p., 75 color ills. "After an introduction of the historical background of the Christian art in Cappadocia the book deals with the architecture and paintings of the Karanlik Kilise, popularly known as the Dark Church, situated in the Göreme valley. The church and its paintings date from mid-tenth century. These wall paintings are known as the best-surviving examples of the late Byzantine art. In addition to the description of all of the major wall paintings in Karanlik Kilise, the Byzantine painting tradition of the period has also been dealt with. The consistency of its repertoire, style and colours indicate that the decoration of the Dark Church was done at a single phase of painting and immediately after it was excavated. Although there is no document surviving about the way that the Cappadocian rock-churches were decorated, the Middle Byzantine literature is rich enough to construct the general progress of the work. The paintings of the Dark Church were applied on a dry plaster of lime mixed with tufa and sand and with chopped straw as a binder. The only areas where this technique (secco or dry fresco) was replaced by the fresco technique were the heads of the figures of Christ, the Virgin and St John the Baptist in the main apse.".
