‎Cultural History of Bengali Proverbs [Hardcover]‎

‎Bengali proverbs are found from the earliest literary specimens down to the present day. They encompass a wide range of subjects dealing with gods and goddesses, mythical characters, folkloric figures and historical persons, social and family life, love, human body and behaviour, materials of everyday use and luxurious items, agriculture and food, nature, place-names, birds, beasts and insects, and the like. These thus reflect the gamut of Bengali society and, at times, the spirit of social revolt. The book then analyses the structure of Bengali proverbs and compares them with other forms of folk literature such as nursery rhymes and riddles, songs and ballads, matters concerning women's rituals in Bengal. It also traces the similarities of Bengali proverbs and proverbs prevalent in other parts of Indian and beyond- a testimony to the commonality of human experience and emotion. ‎Cementing Ethies With Modernism an Appraisal of Sir Sayyed Ahmed Khan's Writings [Hardcover]‎

‎Cementing Ethics with Modernism: An Appraisal of Sir Sayyed Ahmed Khan's Writings Sir Sayyid Ahmad Khan (1817-1898) better known as the founder of the Aligarh Muslim University was not only the first Renaissance Indian Muslim of the 19th century but was also one of the prime movers of modern, scholar and democratic India. The book, running into six chapters zeros in on Sir Sayyid’s writings that explore a stunning variety of topics. The study makes it clear that his relentless efforts for bringing about social reforms and intellectual awakening could bear fruits thanks to his widely known periodicals - The Aligarh Institute Gazette and Tahzibul Akhlaq that proved to be Avanti - courier of modernism in 19th century. The book concentrates on his periodicals that articulate Islam’s moral and social commitment to a rational and humane society. His Islam is not a world of religious bigotry, intolerance and clairvoyance. The book turns attention to his concrete actions (As a member of Vice regal Legislative Counci, Education Commission and Public Service Commission) and his writing that unfailingly obliterate all traces of parochial and sectarian attitude attributed to him by the namby-pamby scholars. ‎India of Our Times: an Experiment in Democracy [Hardcover]‎

‎This book explores the recent history of India -a history that focuses on the British Empire, and all that it did on the vast subcontinent during centuries of governance. While, it was neither planned nor premeditated, the slow and complex historical process of British rule resulted in the unfolding of a new process of viable governance and modernisation that transformed the socio-ecnomico-political map of India-a transformation India had never experienced before. The British legacies—negative and positive—are enormous. While much has been written on the dark period of colonial repression inflicted by the British, this treatise focuses on the positive side of the British presence in India. It is the purpose of this publication to show that the establishment of ideological pragmatism, political pluralism, the initial enactment of social reforms, the introduction of self-governing institutions, and the introduction of technology are the legacies that remain an undeniable part of post-independent India. The British past, thus, has not been completely unkind to India. What the country is today, and the direction in which it is heading are the results of the legacies that the British left, the foundations of which are still visible. About The Author:- Dr. Harish Kapur is professor emeritus of the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland. Also he is the Director of the European Institute in Switzerland and India. The author has spent much of his academic career teaching international relations, and monitoring Ph.D. dissertations of students from different countries. He was recipient of many awards from different European and US Foundations, including a two year grant from Rockefeller Foundation that resulted in his appointment as Research Associate of the Russian Research Centre at Harvard University. Perhaps the most prestigious award he has received is that he has been nominated as the outstanding intellectual in the 20th and 21st centuries, along with 1000 intellectuals from all over the world by the Cambridge International Biographical Centre in the United Kingdom. Before joining the Institute in 1961, he functioned as The Deputy Legal Adviser in the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. While teaching international relations, Professor Kapur devoted much of his time to foreign policy of States with a focus on the former Soviet Union, China, Taiwan, India and the European Union. Most of his writings have been published in Europe, the United States and India. Contents:- Contents, Preface, Introduction, PART I -THE PAST, 1. Colonialism, 2. Nationalism, 3. ‎Untouchable Chandals of India: the Democratic Movement [Hardcover]‎

‎ABOUT THE BOOK:- This is a thrilling tale of changing of political structure and imparting social democracy in a country with very ancient heritage of orthodoxy with anti-democratic, anti-national and anti-human character that marched through the bumpy paths of traditional hurdles and difficult process of democratization initiated by the British ‘Bureaucratic Democracy’ soon after the destruction of Paris Commune in Europe in 1871. The process started in the epicenter called Calcutta, the capital of British India till 1912. This is a tale of the rise of liberation movement of the Untouchables and the Sudras; its fall and restarting again under the colonial rule in India. It narrates the untold tales of the historical and pioneering democratic movements of the untouchable Chandals of Eastern India who formed the immense majority and the lowest stratum of the society. The audacious hope of the ‘Divine Slaves’, the ‘hereditary subject classes’ of the Hindu social system, poorest of the poor, devoid of human status, education and experience in the governance for becoming Kings and Rulers in the Parliamentary Democracy posed a tremendous threat for the ‘Hereditary Ruling Classes’ of India. The saga of this modern movement and cry for equal political rights to have proportional representation in the instrumentalities of the state i. e. Legislature, Executive and Judiciary eventually took a pathetic turn to ugly hatred between communities. The creamy-layer-ruling classes, foreign and Indian combine eventually pushed the country towards partition and declare the unfortunate untouchables and tribes of Eastern and Western India foreign nationals. About The Author:- S. K. Biswas was born in Calcutta on 21st August 1947. He was educated in a missionary school, The Scottish Church Collegiate School and College; graduated in (Political Science Hons), did MA in History. He had passed the IAS Etc. ‎Jurisprudence in India: Through the Ages [Hardcover]‎

‎The book Jurisprudence in India: Through the Ages, is another link in the attempt made by the writer in tracing the modern systems—administrative, political, religious, spiritual, social and legal—available in our ancient times and which have been lost sight of with the passage of time, particularly because of over 600 years of Mohammedan rule followed by British rule. In the present book, the existence of judicial system in India in Vedic period, Hindu period, Mohammedan period and British period has been traced out that our Smritis contain the provisions of present codes of laws—I.P.C., Cr.P.C., C.P.C., Evidence Act, etc.—in more elaborate way, establishing that what British think they have given to India (present legal system) was already available in our ancient India and had eclipsed during Mohammedan rule, when Shariat was in vogue, which did not have detailed codified laws and legal system. This book will certainly be of interest to the people having interest in the ancient Indian systems compared with the modern ones. About The Author:- D. D. Aggarwal, born in 1933, had his schooling in Sonipath (Haryana) and graduation and post- graduation from Delhi. He joined Ministry of Railways through the IAS and Allied Services Examination and retired from there as a Joint Secretary. After retirement he adopted writing books as his pastime and has already written many books including Protocol in Ramcharitmanas and Protocol in Srimad Bhagwat (both in English and Hindi); India Ever Independent: Why only 50years, CBI and Policing in India since Vedic Period and Jurisprudence in India Through the Ages. In these books, the writer has tried to trace the respective modern systems in our ancient books viz., Vedas Samritis Puranas etc. The present book protocol in Mahabharata is another link in the chain depicting all aspects of modern protocol-spiritual, social, political and administrative-existing in Mahabharata, an ocean of contents of Hindu way of life in that era. The author is still busy in bringing out more works in that direction. The Title 'Jurisprudence in India: Through the Ages written/authored/edited by D.D. Aggarwal', published in the year 2002. ‎Protocol in Mahabharata [Hardcover]‎

‎Mahabharata is a comprehensive Puran, projecting all aspects of human life- spiritual, political, administrative and social-as these existed in ancient period. This book Protocol in Mahabharata compares the same with the prevailing aspects in modern times. Spiritual protocol indicates protocol within Gods, seniority in Gods, God-being relation; political protocol indicates the duties of a raja in war and peace, his relation with the subjects and other rajas; laws of war and peace and international agreements. In administrative protocol the raja is said to be bound with the advice of his Secretaries, of course with the veto power. The administrative set up and judicial working appears to be more comprehensive than what it exists today. The social protocol envisages the strict following of the Varnasharama Dharma and any breach was punishable by law. For the sake of maintaining flow and continuity, aspects not having direct relation with protocol have been included in the text to make it a précised book of Mahabharata. The book is particularly informative and educative in view of the content of Bhagwat Gita and Bhishama-Yudhisthra discussions covering all aspects of human life, whose following shall make life most enjoying. ‎Indian Nationalism and Political Awakening in 1920S [Hardcover]‎

‎India of 1920’s was overflowing with sentiments of nationalism and patriotism. With the new methods of agitations like Satyagrah introduced by Mahatma Gandhi in 1920’s came a new hope to the countrymen. The Government of India Act of 1919 was essentially transitional in character. Dominion status for India was the thought for the day. But the appointment of an all White Statutory Commission and non-inclusion of Indias disappointed our political leaders and countrymen. Hope of those leaders dwindled from British Empire who had an undying faith in the administration of British. Apart from the political annoyance of this course, it was regared as a racial insult to have deliberately ignored Indian representation on it, as it was to decide the basis of the future constitution of India. The coming of Simon Commission to India in 1928 to investigate India’s constitutional problems and to make recommendations to the Government in the future Constitution of India worked as a spark in the already tensed political arena of India. It was greeted with the strong protest in all parts of India and all assurances that the Government would consider the Indian view point in all matters was rejected. The Commission Report further infuriated the Indians and the national leaders and the call for ‘Purna Swaraj’ was heard all over the country. This book covers all aspects of the appointment of Statutory Commission. The Historical Background. The Controversial Appointment, Political Awakening and Protest Meeting, Anti-Simonite Demonstrations, The Reports and the Reaction. About The Author:- Dr. Garima Prakash, was born in 1976 and presently she is teaching as a History lecturer with Kamla Nehru College, Delhi University. ‎National Movement and Communal Strife in India From 1937 to 1947: (A Study in Strategy and Interactions) [Hardcover]‎

‎Communalism is one of the most serious problems of the Indian social system and political structure. In the present book the author has tried to analyse the islamic psychology behind the Communal riots in India. The popular belife that Communal riots, Communal bitterness and Communal rivalry has been introduced by Britain in India while Hindus and Muslims in this country had been living for centuries side by side in perfect peace and amity, is thoroughly untenable and uncorroborated by history. Also the Muslim policy of the Indian National Congress has been defective from the very beginning, because instead of profiting from Knowledge and experience. It had sought to go against history simply by ignoring it. Nationalism had different meanings for Hindus and Muslims. Among the varied social groups of mankind, it is difficult to imagine a more striking, contrast than that between Hindu and Muslim social organisation. Cultural and Religious Nationalism could neither be neutralised nor eliminated by the British rule and in due coures of time it changed into political nationalism but the Hindu and Muslim Nationalism turned into divergent directions, clashing with each other dividing India in 1947. ‎Building the Siam Burma Railway During World War-Ii [Hardcover]‎

‎No subject created so much controversy during and after the Pacific war as the Japanese treatment of the Allied Prisoners of War (P.O.W.) in flagrant violation of the Geneva Convention. Whether it was due to the racial war carried out by the Japanese or was the outcome of the mistaken value of “Bushido” the question has never been resolved. The harsh and brutal treatment of the P.O.W. was fully demonstrated, when the Japanese decided to utilize them for the construction of Siam-Burma railway. As a result thousands of them died while working on Siam-Burma Railway, which came to be known as “Railroad of Death”. A fuctional account of the sufferings of the Allied P.O.W. was made famous by Hollywood few years back in the film The Bridge on the River Kwai. ‎India-Pakistan Relations: the Story of a Afractured Fraternity [Hardcover]‎

‎This book makes a critical survey of the origin of Pakistan and its relations with India since 1947. A researcher with keen interest in the topic, the author has brought forth some home truths while assessing the India’s dealings with Pakistan. He argues that it was the Indian rulers’ lack of political farsightedness and pugnacious patriotism and Pakistan’s internal turmoil that failed both the nations to cut their long-drawn ice. India, of course, had been victorious in all the battles to which Pakistan provoked her, but was defeated by Pakistan at the diplomatic counters. The author heavily comes down upon the immaturity and intellectual poverty of those who ruled India during the preceding decades and wrote off the victory, which her military had won, at the counters of diplomacy and negotiation. He says: “it was a national misfortune that the Indian politicians never reached the heights and intellectual level that the scientists and military officials of India attained in their respective fields” with the result that she continued to be the customary loser. He argues that Indo-Pakistan issue could have been easily setlled had the Indian rulers been endowed with patriotism and earnestness to solve it. Students of the history of India-Pakistan relations will find ample material in this work for their academic purpose. The book is narrative as well as critical. ‎History of the Later Harappans and Shilpakara Movement Volume 2 Vols. Set [Hardcover] Volume 2 Vols. Set‎

‎The author has proved that ethnically Harappan people were Dravidians, Australoids and Alpines and not Aryans. They were highly civilized, their heritage and culture very rich. They were efficient artisans, great producers and courageous traders. The book says Aryans, a white race of central Asia, reached North West India in 1700 BC. They destroyed Harappans towns, who had fled to east. The book gives information about denominational Harappan tribes who have settled in various regions of north India including Kumaon hills.
