Havin travelled together in Turkey (Asia Minor / Anatolia) for several years in succession, in recently visited the area of Silifke (Seleucia ad Calycadnos) on the MEditeranean coast north of Cyprus. With the exception of the great archaeological site of Uzuncaburç (Olba / Diocaesarea), the many fascinating ruins spread around there, some along the beautiful sea-shore, others on the slopes or rocky promontories of the Taurus mountains, are practically unknown. We were deeply impressed by these rich, often wel-preserved remains, dating from Hittite to mediaeval times, comprising castles, temples, theatres, cisterns, a wide variety of graves, reliefs, churches and chapels, monasteries, mosaics. Among the most striking witnesses of the past besides Olba / Diocaesarea with the oldest preserved Corinthian temple in Asia Minor, are the extensive Roman / Byzantine city of Kanlidivane (ancient Kanitelis), the ROman rock reliefs of Adam Kayalar, the manby ornate temple-like tombs and the splendid early_Christian onastery of Alahan, perched high up in the Taurus.

Frederick had long been interested in the interplay of Christianity and Islam within the Turkish Empire, and he was gradually to make this a central part of his work. The city of Assur, and the kingdom with its name derived from this city, were established by the early 2nd millennium BC along the bank of the Tigris River in northern Iraq, and continued their existence almost uninterrupted for about 1400 years until the end of the 7th century BC. Assyrian king lists provide a chronology of kings with their capital cities. Albeit with some uncertainties, the sequence begins with the names of kings who reigned at the city of Assur (Qal'at Sherqat) for more than 1000 years and continues in chronological order with kings who resided in the capital cities of the Neo-Assyrian Period, namely Kalhu (Nimrud), Dur-Sarruken (Khorsabad) and Nineveh (Koyunjuk). In this regard, among all states known in ancient Near Eastern history, the Assyrian Kingdom is one of those which maintained its political regime and its institutions of government for the longest time. The political model of governance that had begun to take shape in Mesopotamia during the 4th millennium BC in the lands of Sumer and Akkad matured under Assyrian rule throughout a long historical process of political development. The model of royal sovereignty and its associated institutions of governance and palace architecture, developed by the Neo-Assyrian Kingdom which built upon the experiences and traditions of deep-rooted Mesopotamian civilizations, were adopted and imitated in multiple ways by all kingdoms and empires which followed Assyria in the Near East.

Jh. v. Chr. in der Nähe der alten persischen Residenzsstadt Kelainai (heute Dinar, Provinz Afyon) errichtete Tumulusgrab von Tatarli ist fur das Kulturerbe der Turkei von unschätzbarem Wert, da seine holzerne Grabkammer vollflächig mit qualitätvollen persisch beeinflussten Holzmalereien uberzogen war - eine heute fast gänzlich verlorene Kunstgattung. Das Grab wurde 1969 geplundert, die besterhaltenen Balken herausgesägt und ins Ausland geschafft. Die restlichen Holzbalken wurden ins Archäologische Museum von Afyon gebracht. Vor sechs Jahren wurden vier fehlende Balkenteile in einem Museum in Munchen (Deutschland) wiederentdeckt. Einmal der Nachweis der Zugehorigkeit dieser Stucke mit dem Tatarli-Grab erbracht, starteten Latife Summerer und Alexander von Kienlin, in enger Zusammenarbeit mit dem Ministerium fur Kultur und Tourismus der Republik Turkei, ein Projekt diese vor vierzig Jahren zerstorte Grabkammer so vollständig wie moglich wiederaufzubauen, und auf diese Weise sie fur kunftige Generationen zu bewahren. Mit der Restaurierung der großten aus der Antike erhaltenen Holzmalereien und der Ruckfuhrung aller bereits außer Landes gelangten Teile der Grabkammer ist dieses Projekt nicht nur fur die Wissenschaft ein unschätzbarer Gewinn, sondern leistet auch einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Bewahrung der turkischen Kulturschätze. Mit Forderung der Agentur Istanbul 2010 Kulturhauptstadt Europas und des Auswärtigen Amtes der Bundesrepublik Deutschland wird diese einzigartige bemalte Holzgrabkammer mit ihren farbenfrohen Bildern von Krieg, Kult und Mythos restauriert und zum ersten Mal im Museum Vedat Nedim Tor des Kulturzentrums der Yapi Kredi zwischen dem 17.
