Melting pot of civilizations. [Album of photographs].
New New English Original bdg. with original dust wrapper. In special slip-case. Folio. 389 p. In English. Color ills. In the firts chapter of this book Mr. Ersin Alok displays through these pictures how the same motifs and forms were used by different people on different objects. It is quite remarkable to see that the same cross - like symbol of Christianity was later used by Muslims as well. The second chapter of the book comprises striking shots of antique cities and monumental buildings. Anyone traveling along the western and southern parts of Turkey could find remnants of different cultures every 30 - 40 kilometers. With this remarkable localization of the cities, one wonders how these people could live so close to one another yet be so different culturally.

Assyrian queens of the Imperial period in the light of the cuneiform texts and archaeological sources.= Çivi yazili metinler ve arkeolojik kaynaklar isiginda Asur Imparatorluk dönemi kraliçeleri.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 15 cm). In English and Turkish. 85 p., color and b/w plts. Çivi yazili metinler ve arkeolojik kaynaklar isiginda Asur Imparatorluk dönemi kraliçeleri.= Assyrian queens of the Imperial period in the light of the cuneiform texts and archaeological sources. The period between ca. 934-609 BCE is called the Neo-Assyrian or the Assyrian Imperial Period. The kings of Assyria who lived during this period are very well known, but the queens are less so. On these pages is information on the Assyrian queens' positions, titles and activities during the Neo-Assyrian Period. Our knowledge of these queens comes from textual as well as archaeological sources. During the 1988-1989 excavation season at Nimrud the queens' tombs were found at the Northwest Palace. These tombs included jewellery and objects belonging to three Assyrian queens, although ten Assyrian queens are known from this period. It is known that the Assyrian queens lived in the "harem" at the palace. They played an active role in the social, economic, religious and political life of Assyria. Some of them were very wealthy and had their own army under their command. They supported their husbands and sons as wife or mother. According to the sources, most of the Assyrian queens were not natives of Assyria. They came to the Assyrian palace from a foreign country via marriage. They had the title "woman of the palace" (in Sumerian, MI2.E2.GAL, and in Akkadian, segallu). The figure of the scorpion which appears on texts, seals and the other archaeological artefacts was identified with the queenship.

FÜRUZAN KINAL.
Geographie et l'histoire des pays d'Arzava.
Very Good English Paperback. Pbo. Small 4to. (26 x 18 cm). In French. 52 p. Ills. Arzawa in the second half of the 2nd millennium BC (roughly from late 15th century until the beginning of the 12th century) was the name of a region and a political entity (a "kingdom" or a federation of local powers) in Western Anatolia. The core of Arzawa is believed to have been located along the Kestros River (Küçük Menderes), with its capital at Apasa, later known as Ephesus. When the Hittites conquered Arzawa it was divided into three Hittite provinces: a southern province called Mira along the Maeander River, which would later become known as Caria; a northern province called the Seha River Land, along the Gediz River, which would later become known as Lydia; and an eastern province called Hapalla. It was the successor state of the Assuwa league, which also included parts of western Anatolia, but was conquered by the Hittites in c. 1400. Arzawa was the western neighbour and rival of the Middle and New Hittite Kingdoms. On the other hand it was inclose contact with the Ahhiyawa of the Hittite texts, which corresponds to the Achaeans of Mycenaean Greece. Moreover, Achaeans and Arzawa formed a coalition against the Hittites, in various periods.

A[YSE] MUHIBBE DARGA, (1921-2018).
Hitit sanati.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. In special slip-case. 4to. (28 x 23 cm). In Turkish. 373 p., ills. Hitit sanati. Darga was a Turkish archaeologist. She was the granddaughter of Darugazade Mehmet Emin Bey, Sultan Abdülhamid's first chamberlain, the poet and translator of Jules Verne's novels from French into Turkish. Darga was born in Istanbul in June 1921 and was brought up by French governesses. She studied in Paris and Istanbul. Her father was a doctor and because of her father's professional obligations, she traveled through the Anatolia of the 1930s with her family. Roman and Greek history, debates on art and literature were the staple fair at the dinner table of this intellectual family of the late Ottoman era. Moreover, the family celebrated all religious rituals of the city like Christmas, Easter, Ramadan and sacrificial festivals, organizing fancy dress parties. Darge attended Istanbul University's Hittitology Department at the beginning of the 1940s. She would meet many notables of Archeology at this faculty, founded by Prof. Theodor Bossert who fled from Germany to Turkey. Her enthusiasm and extravert personality, excellence in French and German and of course passion for Archeology drew attention. After Prof Bossert discovered Karatape, a very important excavation site from Hittite era, Darga accompanied him in late 40s. She learned a lot from her tutor on the significance of history and archeology, and the Turkey of those days, during their travels and investigations on horseback. After her researches on Archeology in Germany and France, Darga concentrated on philology and then attained her professorship. In her book Woman in Anatolia, she indicated the status of women in this land and in her Hittite Art; she drew the attention of not only intellectuals but also the general public. This is Turkish Edition.

SERACETTIN SAHIN, HALIS YENIPINAR.
Peintures de l'Eglise Sombre.
As New As New French Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Mint. 4to. (31 x 23 cm). Edition in French. 111 p., 75 color ills. French Edition of Paintings in the Dark Church. "After an introduction of the historical background of the Christian art in Cappadocia the book deals with the architecture and paintings of the Karanlik Kilise, popularly known as the Dark Church, situated in the Göreme valley. The church and its paintings date from mid-tenth century. These wall paintings are known as the best-surviving examples of the late Byzantine art. In addition to the description of all of the major wall paintings in Karanlik Kilise, the Byzantine painting tradition of the period has also been dealt with. The consistency of its repertoire, style and colours indicate that the decoration of the Dark Church was done at a single phase of painting and immediately after it was excavated. Although there is no document surviving about the way that the Cappadocian rock-churches were decorated, the Middle Byzantine literature is rich enough to construct the general progress of the work. The paintings of the Dark Church were applied on a dry plaster of lime mixed with tufa and sand and with chopped straw as a binder. The only areas where this technique (secco or dry fresco) was replaced by the fresco technique were the heads of the figures of Christ, the Virgin and St John the Baptist in the main apse.".

Salvage Project of the Construction Area of the Ilisu Dam III: Roman Empire period and Middle-New ages sites.= Ilisu Baraji Insaat Sahasi Kurtarma Projesi III: Roma Imparatorluk döönem ve Orta-Yakin çag yerlesmeleri. Archaeological surveys carried out in the area to be affected by the planned constructions of the llisu Dam and the hydroelectric power plant (HES) projects on theTigris River revealed the cultural wealth of the region. Part of the works that were initiated in the framework of the "Convention Concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage" ratified by Turkey on 14 April 1982 with the Act no. 2658 were conducted on the 1600 hectares expropriation area where the constructions of the body of the dam, the State Hydraulic Works Compound and the hydroelectric power plant are planned. Surface analyses undertaken by our team in 2008 yielded 15 archaeological zones. Anatolia and Armenians. Great Exodus of the Halys Basin Iron Age community to the Eastern Anatolian Plateau.= Anadolu ve Ermeniler. Kizilirmak Havzasi Demir Çagi toplumunun Dogu Anadolu Yaylasi'na Büyük Göçü.

Great Exodus of the Halys Basin Iron Age community to the Eastern Anatolian Plateau.= Anadolu ve Ermeniler. Kizilirmak Havzasi Demir Çagi toplumunun Dogu Anadolu Yaylasi'na Büyük Göçü. Archaeology is a learning process. The recent systematic archaeological excavations in Anatolia started transforming the history of the land we a re living in from myth to reality. Protohistory, contrary to popular belief, is not a general historical concept vvith a clear start and a clear ending. Which means Protohistory did not started and ended in a specific period. Neolithic , Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age a re the Protohistory of the Hittites; just as the Early Iron Age is the Protohistory of the Phrygians and Urartians. On the other hand, the Eastern Anatolian Plateau, vvhich lost it's literary tradition after the Urartians, lived through it's second Protohistorical Period in the Late Iron Age (600 - 200 BC). ¿n this book the author is revaluating the Second Protohistorical Period of the Eastern Anatolian Plateau in the light of present and contemporary archaeological evidence and historical sources; pointing out vvith proof that in order to find the roots in Eastern Anatolia one should look to the West.

Spolia reincarnated: Afterlives of objects, materials, and spaces in Anatolia from antiquity to the Ottoman era. 10th International ANAMED Annual Symposium.
New English Paperback. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In English. 392 p., ills. Spolia reincarnated: Afterlives of objects, materials, and spaces in Anatolia from antiquity to the Ottoman era. 10th International ANAMED Annual Symposium. At the cutting edge of spolia studies, the collected essays in this volume explore diverse forms and types of reuse in Anatolia over centuries through a cross-cultural lens. Gathered from the joining of disciplines archaeology, art history, and the history of architecture and landscapean exceptional array of examples is presented, including architectural elements and decoration, sculpture and statuary, space and buildings, and textiles and other objects. Most significantly, this ground-breaking work reveals how objects, materials, and spaces attained new meanings in their afterlives through various modes of reuse. The scholarly contributions published here stem from the Tenth International ANAMED Annual Symposium "Spolia Reincarnated: Second Life of Spaces, Materials, Objects in Anatolia from Antiquity to the Ottoman Period" held at Istanbul's Koç University Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations (ANAMED) in December 2015. This unique conference marked ANAMED's tenth anniversary and brought together many prominent scholars and former research center fellows, including the volume's editors.

EKREM AKURGAL, (1911-2002).
Bir arkeologun anilari. Türkiye Cumhuriyeti kültür tarihinden birkaç yaprak.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (28 x 20 cm). In Turkish. [14], 302 p., b/w ills. Bir arkeologun anilari. Türkiye Cumhuriyeti kültür tarihinden birkaç yaprak. 1000 copies were printed. Memoirs of Ekrem Akurgal, (1911-2002). He was a Turkish archaeologist. During a career that spanned more than fifty years, he conducted definitive research in several sites along the western coast of Anatolia such as Phokaia (Foça), Pitane (Çandarli), Erythrai (Ildiri) and old Smyrna (Bayrakli höyük, the original site of the city of Smyrna before the city's move to another spot across the Gulf of Izmir). He was born on March 30, 1911 in the town of Tulkarm in the Beirut Vilayet of the Ottoman Empire (today a Palestinian city in the West Bank), where his mother's family owned a large farm. He descended from a family of Ottoman intellectuals and religious men, several of whose members had assumed the office of mufti, the highest title of the Islamic clergy in a given region, for the Ottoman province of Herzegovina. His family moved back to Istanbul when he was two years old. For some time, they resided in another family farm, this time near Akyazi. He received his first education from his father's sister and her husband, who taught literature in Darülfünun (Istanbul University today). Akurgal graduated in 1931 from Istanbul High School for Boys and, having earned a state scholarship, went to the University of Berlin in Germany to study archaeology. In a Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung made in 1990, the interviewer was to remark that, now and then, his German was still unmistakably tainted with Berlinerisch. In 1957, he became a professor in University of Ankara. He worked mainly in the Aegean Region, starting the researches on Phokaia (Foça), Pitane (Çandarli), Erythrai (Ildiri) and old Smyrna (Bayrakli tumulus). He published numerous books on ancient Greek, Hittite and other ancient civilizations of Anatolia. Settled in Izmir since the seventies to pursue his work on the nearby sites with more effectiveness, Akurgal died on November 1, 2002 in Izmir. His work and legacy is being carried on by his wife, Meral Akurgal, an accomplished archaeologist herself and his closest assistant in his lifetime.
