‎La Salle aux Tresors du Musee du Cinquantenaire presente des oeuvres medievales comptant parmi les plus belles, les plus precieuses et les plus rares conservees aux Musees Royaux d'Art et d'Histoire. Nombreuses sont les pieces qui proviennent de tresors d'eglise comme celui de Tongres ou de Maastricht. L'art Mosan, qui fut florissant entre 950 et 1250 et dont le musee possede une collection mondialement reputee, constitue la base de cette collection. Celle-ci rassemble, en effet, un ensemble unique de pieces d'orfevrerie, de sculptures polychromes et d'ivoires precieux. L'art Mosan, comme son nom l'indique, est originaire de la vallee de la Meuse: les centres principaux furent Liege, Aix-la-Chapelle, Maastricht, Cologne et Stavelot. Il fut fortement influence par les styles carolingien, ottonien, byzantin et antique et fut particulierement florissant aux XIIe et XIIIe siecles. Les pieces principales sont, sans aucun doute, le chef reliquaire du Pape Alexandre, date de 1145, et le superbe autel portatif de Stavelot de 1160 environ. Ce dernier est decore de scenes de l'Ancien et du Nouveau Testament. Ce sont des reliquaires de grande valeur realises, en cuivre et en argent dore, en laiton, ornes de pierres precieuses et emaux. Le culte des reliques etait particulierement developpe au Moyen Age. Pour transporter et conserver celles-ci, les orfevres de l'epoque ont realise des coffrets, des croix ou des reliquaires somptueux. Leur conservation a exige l'amenagement de salles aux tresors ou de sanctuaires dans les eglises. Les deux plats de reliure en ivoire de Genoels-Elderen, uniques et celebres dans le monde entier, datent du VIIIe siecle. Des tissus precieux, comme l'Antependium de Rupertsberg de 1230, font partie de l'ensemble: la soie rouge sert de support a une representation d'Hildegarde de Bingen, resplendissante de beaute.‎

‎Despite some field research our knowledge of the sacred among the Mumuye is still embryonic. In all these acephalic groups of a binary and antinomic nature, the complex va constitutes an extremely varied semantic field in which certain aspects are accentuated depending on the circumstances. Religious power is linked to the strength contained in sacred objects, of which only the elders are the guardians. Moreover, this gerontocracy relies on a system of initiatory stages which one must pass to have access to the status of 'religious leader'. Geographically isolated, the Mumuye were able to resist the attacks of the Muslim invaders, the British colonial authority and the activities of the different Christian missions for a long time. As a result the Mumuye practised woodcarving until the beginning of our century. In 1970 Philip Fry published his essay on the statuary of the Mumuye of which the analysis of the endogenous network has so far lost nothing of its value. Basing himself on in situ observations, Jan Strybol attempted to analyse the exogenous network of this woodcarving. Thus he was able to document about forty figures and some masks and additionally to identify more than twenty-five Mumuye artists as well as a specific type of sculpture as being confined to the Mumuye Kpugbong group. During and after the Biafran war, hundreds of Mumuye sculptures were collected. Based on information gathered between 1970 and 1993 the author has demonstrated that a certain number of these works are not Mumuye but must be attributed to relic groups scattered in Mumuye territory.‎
