‎American Museum of Natural History New York 1947. 1 folded sheet 3 pages. The only recorded copies in OCLC are at the American Museum of Natural History and the DeGolyer Library Special Collections. The scarcity of this item is that school teachers as well as parents would pin these ideas on the wall since character-building was often the main concern in the post-World War II generation. This copy lacks the usual posts. The cover titles is the text on the walls of the American Museum of Natural History's Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Hall which opened in 1936. It was during his appointment as Superintendent of Game Preservation in Sudan 1901-1915 that he met Roosevelt as he led the Smithsonian-Roosevelt African Expedition in 1910. Roosevelt's two-page autograph letter is written from Gondokoro Southern Sudan on 27 February 1910: "Dear Mr Butler/ …We have obtained white/ rhino giant eland buffalo/ roan &c. We'll have little/ time to hunt now…/ Mohammed has proved/ excellent; just what we/ needed. Only three weeks after he was succeeded as president by William Howard Taft in 1909 Theodore Roosevelt embarked to British East Africa on The Smithsonian East Africa Expedition. Roosevelt was accompanied by his son Kermit who served as official photographer and to whom this text is dedicated. The expedition collected over 20000 specimens which would take the Smithsonian over eight years to catalog. During the yearlong trip Roosevelt wrote monthly report articles about the expedition for Scribner's Magazine; in 1910 the articles were published in book format as African Game Trails. "In March 1909 shortly after the end of his presidency Roosevelt left New York for a safari in east and central Africa. Roosevelt's party landed in Mombasa British East Africa now Kenya traveled to the Belgian Congo now Democratic Republic of the Congo before following the Nile up to Khartoum in modern Sudan. Financed by Andrew Carnegie and by his own proposed writings Roosevelt's party hunted for specimens for the Smithsonian Institution and for the American Museum of Natural History in New York. The group included scientists from the Smithsonian and was led by the legendary hunter-tracker R.J. Cunninghame and was joined from time to time by Frederick Selous the famous big game hunter and explorer. Among other items Roosevelt brought with him four tons of salt for preserving animal hides a lucky rabbit's foot given to him by boxer John L. Sullivan an elephant-rifle donated by a group of 56 admiring Britons and the famous Pigskin Library a collection of classics bound in pig leather and transported in a single reinforced trunk. All told Roosevelt and his companions killed or trapped over 11397 animals from insects and moles to hippopotamuses and elephants. These included 512 big game animals including six rare white rhinos. The expedition consumed 262 of the animals. Tons of salted animals and their skins were shipped to Washington; the quantity was so large that it took years to mount them all and the Smithsonian was able to share many duplicate animals with other museums.
