‎(ROOSEVELT, Theodore) RIIS, Jacob A‎

‎THEODORE ROOSEVELT THE CITIZEN‎

‎New York: The Outlook Company 1904. First Edition. Hardcover. Hinges cracked and neatly repaired. Still Near Fine. Second Printing in publisher's original decorated cloth. Illustrated with plates. This copy virtually unique as it is INSCRIBED and SIGNED by both the author and the subject as President. Riis's inscription is dated 5 August 1908. Roosevelt writes: "with the best wishes of/Theodore Roosevelt/The White House/Jan. 18th 1909." The addition of "The White House" by Roosevelt is notable as prior to his administration the residence was known as the "President's Palace" the "President's House" and the "Executive Mansion." It was Roosevelt who officially named it "The White House" in 1901. Of the many books signed by Roosevelt we have both handled and seen we have never before encountered one in which he has noted his official residence along with his signature.

Jacob Riis among the most dedicated advocates for America's oppressed and downtrodden arrived in New York from his native Denmark at the age of 21 in 1870. A pioneer in photojournalism Riis photographed and wrote about the slums and tenements of a New York in the dawn of a new century. Riis came to Roosevelt's attention through his 1890 book HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES. As Commissioner of the New York City Police Department Roosevelt accompanied Riis on his evening travels through the slums and witnessed firsthand the inhumane conditions endured by many of New York's inhabitants. In his 1901 book MAKING OF AN AMERICAN Riis wrote of Roosevelt: "It could not have been long after I wrote HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES that he came to the Evening Sun office one day looking for me. I was out and he left his card merely writing on the back of it that he had read my book and had 'come to help.' That was all and it tells the whole story of the man. I loved him from the day I first saw him; nor ever in all the years that have passed has he failed of the promise made then. No one ever helped as he did. For two years we were brothers on Mulberry Street." Roosevelt in turn wrote of Riis after his death: "It is difficult for me to write of Jacob Riis only from the public standpoint. He was one of my truest and closest friends. I have ever prized the fact that once in speaking of me he said 'since I met him he has been my brother.' I have not only admired and respected him beyond measure but I have loved him dearly . and I mourn him as if he were one of my own family." The Outlook Company hardcover‎

Fine copy in custom blue cloth clamshell box. Illustrated from photographs by R.B. Thompson. 75 pp. 1 vols. 4to. The very scarce printed memorial printed on board the ship of FDR’s Third Presidential Cruise on the USS Houston from the July 14 to August 9 1938 on his way to the Galapagos Islands FDR was the first U.S. President to visit them. In the introduction to the booklet one of the editors records that “Shortly after the cruise commenced certain members of the Houston personnel conceived the idea of publishing a book which would relate graphically all of the interesting incidents happening on board our ship … We trust that the following pages will keep alive fond memories of a happy cruise with as grand a shipmate it has ever been our privilege to meet.†There are numerous photos of Roosevelt with the crew and the Presidential party shots of the Galapagos and its strange fauna and a good deal of wit and raillery in the text and photos directed toward the “pollywogs†on the part of the “shellbacks†in anticipation of the approaching traditional ceremony of “crossing the line.†The ship called at Cocos Island and the log records successful sport fishing for sailfish in those waters. The U.S.S. Houston was sunk during the war. A wonderfully light-hearted and very scarce piece for the FDR collector at a time when the clouds of a world war were gathering on the horizon. ‎(Theodore Roosevelt) ???, Arthur‎

‎An Autographed Letter Signed‎

‎White River Colorado 1901. Very good. Four pages on plain lined writing paper measuring apprx. 8†x 10â€. The letter is written to the his mother. We know the following; he is a school teacher or as he states it “a pedagogue†he is a hunter he had a cousin a Major Hersey that served as a “Rough Rider†in Cuba; A fascinating letter the writer is on a hunting trip and through pure chance encounters Theodore Roosevelt who is also in the Meeker Colorado area hunting Mountain Lions with his guide as identified in the letter as John Goff. He relates meeting TR. Arthur gets TR to let him take his "Snap-shot". When Arthur tells TR he is a teacher and his cousin was Maj. Hersey of the Rough Riders. TR "wanted to shake hands with me and so forth. He is as pleasant a man as I ever met." He further relates that TR has a lion on the back of the guide's saddle and describes his dress. Later details are of the writer's success in hunting deer and information on his teaching experience and plans. On this date TR is the Vice President-elect but by the following September he will be the President following the death of McKinley in Buffalo NY. From the New York Times / COL. ROOSEVELT COMING EAST. Killed Twelve Mountain Lions Among Them One Weighing 227 Pounds. MEEKER Col. Feb 16.--Vice President-elect Roosevelt and John Goff rode into Meeker from the Keystone Ranch last night having concluded their hunt for big game in the mountains. When asked for interviews Col. Roosevelt referred the correspondent to Mr. Goff. Mr. Goff said seventeen lions were killed during the hunt and that the Colonel himself killed twelve four with his knife and eight with his rifle. Mr. Goff further stated that Col. Roosevelt killed the largest lion that has been killed in this section weighing 227 pounds and measuring 81/2 feet in the flesh. Mr. Goff states that Col. Roosevelt killed it with his knife. One of the most exciting experiences of the hunt occurred when Col. roosevelt killed his second largest lion. In order to get a shot the Colonel leaned the larger portion of his weighty body over a cliff forty feet high. Goff held him by the leg. The Colonel brought down his game with the first shot. Col. Roosevelt expressed himself as having the most enjoyable time of his life. He will leave Meeker to-day in a special conveyance. He will take the train to-night at Rifle when he probably will go home. unknown‎
