The copy for President Rafael Molina was delivered to him on October 22 1937 with a note confirming delivery to Secretary Cordell Hull.

President Rafael Trujillo was the dictator who ruled the Dominican Republic from 1930 - 1961. During his time as president he was responsible for thousands of political deaths and assassinations. It was later learned that that CIA played a part in the assassination of Trujillo in 1961. Provenance: Book was acquired from a "senior executive" at the USGPO by New York bookseller Warren Berry.

Records from the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library indicate that "In all seventy-five copies were printed fifty copies in full pigskin with double box type slipcase and twenty-five copies half bound with marbled sides and conventional single slip cases." The library documents also note that "names and titles of the dignitaries who are to receive the book also require careful research" indicating that mistakes were made and certain copies were held back. Multiple requests were made of Roosevelt to produce more copies but all complete copies were distributed. United States Government Printing Office unknown books‎

‎Washington D.C.: United States Printing Office 1937. First edition one of 75 but probably one of only 7 in this binding. 97 3 pp. 4to. Bound in full light bown pigskin with metallic plaque of the Seal of the United States inset into the upper cover now with a fine patina pigskin doublures and silk endpapers. Fine. In quarter leather and marbled boards pull off slipcase. First edition one of 75 but probably one of only 7 in this binding. 97 3 pp. 4to. A sumptously produced White House Christmas book commemorating FDR's nearly month-long diplomatic mission to promote "hemispheric solidarity" with South America. The book was issued in an uncertain though undoubtedly strictly limited number with two issues--in full pigskin as seen here and half pigskin and marbled boards. The colophon calls for 75 copies with the more desirable full pigskin binding scheduled to run to 50 copies for distribution to South American dignitaries and the half-leather isssue of a planned 25 copies reserved for FDR's personal use and distribution at the holidays. Documents at the Library at Hyde Park suggest that the full edition of 75 copies was not achieved cf. ‎AUTOGRAPH AND TYPED LETTERS FROM FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT CONCERNING THE FOUNDING AND EARLY DEVELOPMENT OF WARM SPRINGS GEORGIA‎

‎Warm Springs Ga 1928. 8pp. in Roosevelt's hand 10pp. typed including 7pp. on Warm Springs letterhead. Letters have been hole-punched and bear marks from previous stapling. Half-inch tear to one of the typed pages and some chipping to 3 pages of memos. In a half red morocco slipcase. A small but exceptional collection of memos and drafts providing rare insight into how FDR ran the Georgia Warm Springs a Georgia resort that he took over and developed into a retreat for polio sufferers after founding the Warm Springs Foundation in 1927. The collection comprises five parts:

1 Autograph manuscript not signed in FDR's hand on Warm Springs letterhead. 5pp. "To all patients. The Foundation is conducting the treatment and the patients come here for a definite purpose. The greater part of each day is taken up with the treatment and while there is no wish to curtail personal liberty or recreation it is essential to prevent fatigue and to work for the highest degree of health for all concerned. That is why simple rules are necessary. Many patients or their families will perhaps consider that circumstances warrant special exceptions to the rules - but this would soon lead to confusion and discrimination. That is why all patients whether of full age or minors whether living in the colony hotel or in private cottages are asked to live up not only to the letter but to the spirit of the rules. We are concerned with the greatest good to the greatest number."

2 Autograph manuscript not signed in FDR's hand. 3pp. "Memo."

3 Typed manuscript dated January 1 1928. 8pp. four drafts. "Rules for Guests Living in the Colony."

4 Typed manuscript dated July 7 1927 on Georgia Warm Springs Foundation letterhead. 1p. "Subject: The Comfort & Happiness of Patients" signed in type: "E.T. Curtis Mgr." Reading in part: "A prime reason for the operation of Warm Springs by the Hon. Franklin D. Roosevelt and associates is the establishment of the Cure. The happiness of all patients whether in the Hotel in the Colony or in private cottages is of the first importance and will be so considered by all members of the staff."

5 Typewritten newsletter "The Daily Gossip" dated July 6 1927 on the verso of Georgia Warm Springs letterhead. Whimsical report of the disappearance and subsequent location of two of the resort's patients who happened to be young male and inebriated.

Roosevelt acted as general manager in charge of setting policy during first year of the foundation the period during which these letters were written. He would ultimately meet his end there two decades later and it was subsequently renamed the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation. This collection of documents outlines policies and reflects Roosevelt's enthusiasm for the resort's therapeutic capabilities from which he felt he had already benefited as well as his sense of great responsibility for visiting patients. Letters and documents including details of Roosevelt's time at Warm Springs are rare. unknown books‎

‎Looking Forward‎

‎John Day 1933. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. One of ten deluxe copies only prepared for presentation by the publisher and FDR. The publisher in addition to the first trade edition published a deluxe edition in a different format of 100 copies only all numbered. Copies 11 through 100 were for sale. Copies 1 through 10 were not for sale. This is copy 10 one of the first 10 copies explicitly according to the colophon page not for sale. Differs from the first trade edition in many ways including gold gilt on top edge and beveled boards. Also strangely the deluxe edition is a smaller format than the trade edition although it has all the same content. Housed in a custom-made collector slipcase. Needless to say deluxe one of ten copies of significant books by US Presidents are very uncommon. This is an early title by FDR articles and speeches before he became President and published just when he started his first term. Issued without a dust jacket. We have seen only one other copy of this presentation edition and it was inscribed by FDR. John Day hardcover books‎

‎President Franklin D. Roosevelt TLS: Proud of the Progress Made Against Child Labor by the New Deal's National Recovery Administration‎

‎32nd President typed letter signed on White House letterhead Washington January 4 1937 to Nevada Governor Richman Kirman. As the United States industrialized factory and mine owners hired children for a variety of tasks as they were especially useful in fixing machinery and navigating the small areas that fully grown adults could not. Children were often hired together with their parents and many families in mill and mining towns depended on their children's labor to make enough money for necessities. But conditions were deplorable and it was dangerous work that resulted in the maiming and death of many children.

In this letter President Roosevelt write to Kirman whom he addresses "My dear Governor" about child labor laws. "I am sure you will agree with me that one of the most encouraging developments of the past few years is the general agreement that has been reached that child labor should be permanently abolished. Outstanding gains were made under the N. R. A. codes which have been maintained in many establishments through the voluntary cooperation of employers."."However it is closely indicated that child labor especially in low paid unstandardized types of work is increasing. I am convinced that Nation-wide minimum standards are necessary and that a way should be found promptly to crystallize in legal safeguards public opinion in behalf of the elimination of child labor."."Do you not agree with me that ratification of the child labor amendment by the remaining 12 States whose action is necessary to place it in the Constitution is the obvious way to early achievement of our objective I hope that you will feel that this can be made one of the major items in the legislative program of your State this year." Working children were also deprived the opportunity to attend school. At the start of the 20th century organizations were formed that sought laws to regulate and even to prohibit child labor. unknown books‎
