An exceptionally lovely example from this small edition of 100 copies poignantly inscribed by FDR on the first free endpaper to the widow of his close friend and colleague Marvin H. McIntyre who had died earlier that year: "For Dodie McIntyre - / This was on the list for good old Mac and I want you to have it in his memory. / Franklin D. Roosevelt."<br /> <br /> A collection of Roosevelt's first three inaugural addesses among the most significant in American history and an enduring reminder of both the dire national economic straits in which his presidency began in 1933 and the grave threat to democracy that the world was facing in 1941 at the start of his unprecedented third term. At the time it was published he had not yet announced his campaign for a yet another fourth term but his continuing dedication to an Allied victory in World War II coupled with his work on creating a lasting post-war peace through new international organizations among them the United Nations compelled him to throw his hat into the ring once more seven months later in July 1944.<br /> <br /> This penultimate "Christmas book" continued a tradition of book-giving that FDR had begun in 1935 see Halter pp. 193-4. In this case it was presented to Dodie McIntyre whose husband Marvin - nicknamed "Mac" - had served in the Roosevelt administration since its inception and also been a close friend of FDR's since they served together in the Navy Department during World War I.<br /> <br /> Rare in commerce this volume has performed well at auction in its few recent appearances. Washington DC: Government Printing Office 1943. First edition first printing of the three addresses commissioned by the President himself and attractively printed. Each Christmas from 1935 onwards Roosevelt produced a privately printed volume to give to friends and associates. Each contained his addresses or messages and were printed in large type on Worthy Hand and Arrows paper by the Government Printing Office at Roosevelt's expense. For this work approximately 100 unnumbered copies were produced for Roosevelt to inscribe to associates at Christmas 1943. Those copies are found bound in quarter vellum with a limitation page and a calligraphic title. This copy does not have the limitation leaf and is bound in quarter morocco - it perhaps presents remaining sheets bound at a later date. Octavo. Original blue quarter morocco spine lettered in gilt gilt presidential seal to front cover. Housed in original grey card slipcase. A few pencil editorial corrections to contents possibly by the printer. A fine copy. Ernest J. Limited edition number 169 of 250 copies signed by Eleanor Roosevelt on the limitation page. Hardcover binding in excellent condition with minimal fading to the spine which is uniform except for a 3mm strip at the bottom edge. Top edge of closed pages is gilt-covered remaining bright and clean. The other page edges are deckled uncut and several pages of text and/or endpapers are uncut and unopened. The original unrestored dustjacket has a few small chips a perforation and non-linear tears in correlation with the placement of the slipcase half-circle finger-pull several small tears and creases to the edges a two square inch chip on the rear flap which was reattached from the rear using archival tape a tiny square of archival tape repair to the front of the rear panel minor to moderate soiling and considerable sunning to the spine; protected in archival Mylar. The inner flaps of the dustjacket are blank which indicates that this is the correct issue dustjacket for this edition. The original unrestored slipcase is lightly to moderately browned sunned with minimal cracking to seams with minor scuffing and has a few tiny areas of blue paper loss to the extremities due to shelfwear. The longest serving First Lady's 2nd book published concurrent with her husband's first inauguration. In 1932 she edited "Hunting Big Game in the Eighties: The Letters of Elliott Roosevelt Sportsman" and wrote "When You Grow Up to Vote." The First Edition limited to 250 hand-numbered copies signed by Eleanor Roosevelt is also known as the Autograph Edition and is also known as the Deluxe Edition. Frederick A. Stokes Company Hardcover

RARE surviving copy of a quickly published contemporary ephemeral version of a work of enduring value. Format is approximately 4.875 inches by 7.25 inches. 2 31 1 pages. Frontispiece portrait of Theodore Roosevelt with facsimile signature with flimsy. Cover worn soiled with some edge chips. Theodore Roosevelt delivered the speech entitled “Citizenship in a Republic†at the Sorbonne in Paris on April 23 1910. The speech is popularly known as “The Man in the Arena.†His statements at the Sorbonne were part of a larger trip to Europe. Librairie Hachette was founded in 1826 by Louis Hachette as Brédif a bookshop and publishing company. It became L. Hachette et Compagnie on 1 January 1846. Louis Christophe François Hachette 5 May 1800 – 31 July 1864 was a French publisher who established a Paris publishing house. Publications were initially focused on the classics and subsequently expanded to include books and magazines of all types. Hachette lent the weight of his influence towards a just settlement of issues relating to international literary copyright. One reference to a 2013 auction sale was found through an extensive Internet search. Over the course of his time in the public eye Theodore Roosevelt gave a number of moving influential highly quotable public addresses—but none of them has the legacy of the speech he delivered in Paris on April 23 1910 which would become one of the most widely quoted orations of his career. The former president—who left office in 1909 embarked on a tour of Northern Africa and Europe in 1910 attending events and giving speeches in places like Cairo Berlin Naples and Oxford. He stopped in Paris on April 23 and made his way to the Sorbonne where “fully 25000 persons packed the streets†in the words of the newspapers. At 3 p.m. before a crowd that included “ministers in court dress army and navy officers in full uniform nine hundred students and an audience of two thousand ticket holders Roosevelt delivered a speech called “Citizenship in a Republic†which would come to be known as “The Man in the Arena.†“Citizenship in a Republic†made headlines around the world. It ran in the Journal des Debats as a Sunday supplement got sent to the teachers of France by Le Temps was printed by Librairie Hachette on Japanese vellum was turned into a pocket book that sold 5000 copies in five days and was translated across Europe. The speech was a wild success. “Several times the applause lasted two minutes and was probably the greatest demonstration ever given a foreign lecturer†one newspaper noted. “So eager was every one outside to get a glimpse of Roosevelt that frequent clashes with the police occurred.â€.
