ROOSEVELT, Franklin D
Addresses July 19 1940 to January 20 1941.
Washington DC: U.S. Government Printing Office 1941. Presented to a modernist poet soon to join Roosevelt's wartime administration First edition number 42 of 75 copies privately printed for presentation by Roosevelt signed by him on the limitation page and inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Archie MacLeish With a Happy Christmas from Franklin D. Roosevelt". The modernist poet Archibald MacLeish 1892-1982 had written speeches for Roosevelt and served him as Librarian of Congress from 1939 and in his war administration. "Politically during the thirties MacLeish was developing a liberal humanism that made him admire Franklin D. Roosevelt for whom he later wrote speeches. As librarian he applied his formidable administrative talents to reorganizing and modernizing the inertia-bound Library of Congress. He also directed an information/propaganda agency called the Office of Facts and Figures in 1941. The agency lasted less than a year and lacked the authority to accomplish much. MacLeish then became assistant director of the Office of War Information 1942-1943. He wrote little poetry during this period but in essays and speeches continued to argue for freedom and communal solidarity not just to overcome fascism but to promote and exercise the freedoms on which the United States was based. In 1944 MacLeish resigned from the library and prepared to return to private life. Roosevelt however appointed him assistant secretary of state for cultural and public affairs. In 1945 he resigned this position and led the US. delegation to the organizational meeting of UNESCO and in 1946 he served as assistant head of the US delegation to UNESCO. Only after that did he return to private life" ANB. Each Christmas from 1935 onwards Roosevelt produced a privately printed volume to give to friends and associates. Each contained his addresses or messages and were printed in large type on Worthy Hand and Arrows paper by the Government Printing Office at Roosevelt's expense. This compilation collects ten addresses from the 1940 election from his speech accepting the Democratic nomination to his third inaugural address. Loosely inserted is a typed envelope label addressed to Archibald MacLeish from "The President". Provenance: Donald Scott Carmichael 1912-2008 with his bookplate to the front pastedown. Carmichael was a leading Roosevelt and Churchill collector and author of Franklin Roosevelt and Me: Brief Encounters in the Thirties 1991. "A lifelong Democrat he was a member of President Johnson's Task Force on the War Against Poverty a delegate to the 1960 and 1964 Democratic conventions and served on the Ohio Civil Rights Commission. He served on the boards of the National Conference of Christians and Jews and the Cleveland United Negro College Fund and was president of Karamu House an interracial cultural settlement house in Cleveland" obituary in Finest Hour Winter 2008/9. Octavo. Original quarter vellum blue paper label to spine marbled sides top edge gilt other edges untrimmed; in original card slipcase. Housed in a custom blue quarter morocco slipcase and chemise. Pale foxing to japon else a fine copy. hardcover

Tiny scuff to the front board some very mild scuffing to the board edges else fine. Lacking the publisher's slipcase. Limited edition no. 28 of 75 copies. 8vo. McIntyre: "For Marvin / with a Happy Christmas/ from / Franklin D. Roosevelt."<br /> <br /> This concise collection of ten speeches presents selected highlights from Roosevelt's 1940 presidential campaign commencing with his July 19 radio address announcing his decision to run for an unprecedented third term - along with the reasoning behind it - and concluding with his inaugural address on January 20 1941.<br /> <br /> Marvin "Mac" McIntyre became friends with Roosevelt when both men worked at the Navy Department during World War I and shared day-to-day appointment and schedule responsibilities with Steven T. Early during FDR's unsuccessful 1920 Vice Presidential campaign. When Roosevelt decided to run for president in 1932 he called up his old friend "Mac" hired him as his Press Officer and then appointed him as his Appointments Secretary in the White House. Later in 1941 - just before this book was printed - McIntyre would be present when Roosevelt learned of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Roosevelt, Franklin Delano
Addresses of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill
Washington D.C.: The White House Government Printing Office 1942. First edition limited issue of 100 numbered and signed copies this is #29. A crisp clean copy very near fine in the publisher's marbled boards with white vellum spine and applied gilt-stamped morocco spine label. Some foxing to the bottom of the vellum a few abrasions with minor losses to rear board and some tiny nicks to the spine label with no loss. Lacking the glassine jacket but with the publisher's slipcase dampstained at one corner and with the boards bowed inward; still sound. Else a superb example very good overall. First edition limited issue of 100 numbered and signed copies this is #29. Probably the rarest and most sought-after of the Roosevelt "Christmas books" this is #29 of 100 limited copies personally signed and hand-numbered by Roosevelt and additionally inscribed by him on the first free endpaper to his long-time friend colleague and confidante: "For Marvin H. McIntyre / with the affectionate regards of his old friend / Franklin D. Roosevelt / Christmas 1942."<br /> <br /> This was one of the last of FDR's annual "Christmas books" and it contains some of the most affecting and significant speeches delivered by him and his British counterpart Winston Churchill all during the first month of America's engagement in World War II. Among these are FDR's "Day of Infamy" speech formally seeking a declaration of war against Japan from Congress; his January 6 1942 State of the Union message; and Churchill's December 26 1941 address to the United States Congress. After fulfilling so many of his earlier promises in bringing stability and hope to the middle class in the wake of the Depression Roosevelt used these eloquent addresses to help shepherd a weary nation into perhaps its most significant military sacrifice fighting the menace of fascism and developing a cold but nevertheless open and important relationship with the Soviet Union. A fold-out facsimile of the "Declaration by United Nations" pledging global cooperation in combating the members of the Tripartite Pact appears after the president's speech on the subject near the rear of the volume.<br /> <br /> Examples of this Christmas book are extremely rare in commerce; many are treasured by the descendants of those who had received them personally as gifts from Roosevelt and those that have sold at auction have attained very healthy results often surpassing the high estimate. This copy is especially significant because it is inscribed to McIntyre who first met and befriended Roosevelt when they both worked for the Secretary of the Navy during the First World War. He shared day-to-day scheduling responsibilities with Steven T. Early when Roosevelt ran for Vice President in 1920 and for his 1932 presidential campaign the candidate asked "Mac" to be his Press Officer. McIntyre served in several capacities in the administration and was as close to the President during his workday as Missy LeHand or Grace Tully Roosevelt's very well-known secretaries. FDR relied on his trusted friend to speak to the press organize his endless parade of meetings and manage the expectations of anyone who got close to him and "Mac" was present when Roosevelt learned of the attack on Pearl Harbor. McIntyre died a week before Christmas 1943 when Roosevelt was in the middle of his third term.<br /> <br /> A rare occasion to obtain one of the most prized of FDR volumes inscribed here to one of his most valued friends. Roosevelt, Franklin D
Addresses of the President of the United States on the Occasion of His Visit to South America November & December 1936
Washington D.C.: United States Printing Office 1937. First edition one of 75 but probably one of only 7 in this binding. 97 3 pp. 1 vols. 4to. Bound in full light bown pigskin with metallic plaque of the Seal of the United States inset into the upper cover now with a fine patina pigskin doublures and silk endpapers. Fine. In quarter leather and marbled boards pull off slipcase. First edition one of 75 but probably one of only 7 in this binding. 97 3 pp. 1 vols. 4to. A sumptously produced White House Christmas book commemorating FDR's nearly month-long diplomatic mission to promote "hemispheric solidarity" with South America. The book was issued in an uncertain though undoubtedly strictly limited number with two issues--in full pigskin as seen here and half pigskin and marbled boards. The colophon calls for 75 copies with the more desirable full pigskin binding scheduled to run to 50 copies for distribution to South American dignitaries and the half-leather isssue of a planned 25 copies reserved for FDR's personal use and distribution at the holidays. Documents at the Library at Hyde Park suggest that the full edition of 75 copies was not achieved cf. Horowitz "Carmichael Collection" and that as few as seven were ever bound in full pigskin. <br /> This copy one of the "foreign" issues was nonetheless INSCRIBED to FDR's Sectretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau on a specially printed leaf: "To the Honorable Henry Morgenthau Jr Secretary of the Treasury of the United States" printed and inscribed below in the President's hand "From his old friend/ Franklin D. Roosevelt, James & Shalett, Sidney
Affectionately F.D.R. A son's story of a lonely man
Inscribed on title page: For one of the finest people who tread this earth Hon. Thomas J. O'Brien M.C. from his appreciative friend James Roosevelt O'Brien was a Congressman from Illinois from 1933-1939 & 1943-1964.<br /><br />Clean text. Price unclipped $5.75. Protected by Brodart dust jacket cover. <br /><br />Beautiful green boards with gold print on backplate and metallic green insignia on front. Endpapers have wonderful pictures of Roosevelt Family. Book is in very good plus condition. The dust jacket is in good condition with some small folds and creases on top of front. Some chips along top of spine and shelf wear along bottom. Rear has some spotting on top half. <br /><br />Beautiful book from the President's oldest son who was involved in many personal and professional scandals throughout his life. For example his second wife blackmailed him for his numerous affairs while his third wife stabbed him eight times with his own Marine combat knife. Many other scandals involving "Jimmy" occurred before his death in 1985. <br /><p>From Politico.</p><p>More than President Roosevelt's oldest son and his physical support at public appearances Jimmy also served for a time as one of the president's closest advisers. Yet he could never shake the stigma of influence-peddling. In both his father's first and second terms he had to dodge rumors "of using political influence to make huge profits for his insurance agency." The secretary of the Treasury accused him of acting as bootlegging partner to Joseph Kennedy Sr.—and when Jimmy interceded on behalf of a tax-evading business associate even threatened to resign in protest. Toward the end of his tenure as his father's advisor Jimmy approached SEC Chairman William O. Douglas with a plan from the utility companies to rig financial regulations in return for kickbacks. Rather than endorsing the scheme Douglas brought word of it to the president along with his own letter of resignation—and was stunned when FDR wept with anger.<br /></p><p>Nor did word of these scandals stay confined to the White House. In 1938 the <i>Saturday Evening Post</i> published "Jimmy's Got It" an exposé alleging that the president's son brought in as much as $2 million annually through his insurance business. </p><p>From Wikipedia.</p><b>James Roosevelt II</b> December 23 1907 – August 13 1991 was an American businessman Marine activist and Democratic Party politician. Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt he served as an official Secretary to the President for his father and was later elected to the United States House of Representatives representing California serving 5 terms from 1955 to 1965. He received the Navy Cross while serving as a Marine Corps officer during World War II.<br /><p>He resigned from Congress in October 1965 10 months into his sixth term when President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed him a delegate to the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization UNESCO. Roosevelt resigned from UNESCO in December 1966 and retired to become an executive of the Investors Overseas Service IOS in Geneva Switzerland.2</p><p>Roosevelt joined the IOS despite the overseas firm's concurrent investigation by the SEC for numerous irregularities. In Geneva in May 1969 during the unraveling of IOS Roosevelt's third wife Irene Owens stabbed him "eight times" with his "own Marine combat knife" while he was preparing divorce proceedings. When fugitive financier Robert Vesco obtained control of IOS from Bernie Cornfeld and absconded with approximately $200 million Roosevelt initially stayed on under Vesco. Roosevelt later wrote that "As soon as I saw the situation for what it was in 1971 I resigned my position." However this episode resulted in federal charges being laid against Roosevelt and several others as well as a Swiss arrest warrant. The charges were later dropped and then he returned to California settling in Newport Beach. He became associated with the Nixon Administration in several capacities and remained friendly with Richard Nixon until his death.</p><p>Despite having been a liberal Democrat all of his life Roosevelt joined Democrats for Nixon and publicly supported President Nixon's 1972 re-election and also supported Ronald Reagan in 1980 and 1984.</p><p>In the 1980s a non-profit organization established by Roosevelt the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare and its associated political action committee were investigated by the House Ways and Means Committee for questionable money-raising practices and by the Post Office for mail fraud. By direct mail Roosevelt's group solicited contributions from elderly persons by claiming that Social Security and Medicare programs were in financial jeopardy. Roosevelt also urged contributors to order their Social Security statements of earnings from his group these are free from the government.<br /></p> Harcourt, Brace & Company hardcover

Roosevelt, James and Shalett, Sidney
Affectionately F.D.R.; A son's story of a lonely man
New York: Harcourt Brace & Company 1959. First Edition stated presumed first printing. Hardcover. Good/Fair. xii 394 2 pages. Illustrated endpapers. Illustrated with 16 pages of photographs. Foreword by Sidney Shalett. Acknowledgments and Bibliography. Index. DJ is in a plastic sleeve and is worn torn soiled and chipped. Inscription on the title page signed by James Roosevelt. James "Jimmy" Roosevelt II1 December 23 1907 - August 13 1991 was an American businessman Marine activist and Democratic Party politician. The oldest son of U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt he received the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism while serving as a Marine Corps officer during World War II. He served as an official Secretary to the President and in the United States House of Representatives. Sidney Shalett 1911-1965 was a writer who also worked for the Chattanooga Times and the New York Times and in 1947 became a Washington correspondent for American Magazine. He interviewed the Roosevelt family for a project on President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Derived from a Kirkus review: Subtitled A Son's Story of a Lonely Manthis is a warm generousreminiscence of F.D.R. the parent rather than the politician by his oldest son then a Congressman from California. To his children especially to James their father was three people: the vigorous lively companion before Campobello the remote man during his illness and the further removed public figure. The recollections span F.D.R.'s career from the N.Y. State Senate to his fourth term in the White House concentrating on family details: gatherings at Hyde Park; their mother's shyness which made social duties an ordeal; their grandmother's interference which James admits spoiled the Roosevelt children; their schooling which meant Groton and Harvard; later the unfavorable publicity the boys seemed to attract during the war and in their marriages. James raises the question of what drove his father what was really inside him but in this essentially loyal book he leaves the question unanswered. Harcourt, Brace & Company hardcover

E-339: Charles Scribner's Sons. Good with no dust jacket. 1910. Hardcover. Leather. 8vo. Published by Charles Scribner's Sons New York. 1910. Xxiv 583 pgs. Maps. Illustrated with 200 photos by Kermit Roosevelt. First Edition/First Printing with Conkey/Hammond seal present to the verso page. Previous owner's name present to the FFEP. Text is free of marks. Outside of the spine the binding is tight and solid. While he is best known for being the 26th President of the United States Theodore Roosevelt is also remembered for his immense love of nature animals and game hunting. "African Game Trails" is Roosevelt's memoirs about a hunting trip to Africa that he took with his son Kermit in 1908. In the text he vividly describes the country in exotic detail. In full detail he depicts the enthusiastic thrill of the hunt as well as the beauty of the animals he tracked. He also portrays his interactions with other famous game hunters such as Major Boyd Cunningham and Frederick Selous who is known as one of the last big game hunters in Africa. As a naturalist Roosevelt was immensely interested in the native flora and fauna of East Africa. He included descriptions of fascinating plants and animals that are only found on the continent introducing the natural landscape of Africa to readers who had never seen it. Roosevelt was a firm believer in portraying wildlife as naturally as possible; he even wrote a number of essays denouncing anthropomorphism in literature. He wanted his works to be as realistic and lifelike as possible so that "African Game Trails" is a true representation of the beauty and majesty that Roosevelt saw during his trip to East Africa. His adventures in the untamed jungles of the continent are as thrilling now as they were when the book was first published in the early twentieth century. EB; 2.5 x 9 x 6.1 Inches; 529 pages .
