Roosevelt, Franklin Delano; Winston S Churchill [Henry Wadsworth Longfellow]
Sail On O Ship of State! The Longfellow Verse in Mr. Roosevelt’s Message to Mr. Churchill.
Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd. 1941. Rare lithographic broadside signed by Franklin Delano Roosevelt as the thirty-second President of the United States and Winston S. Churchill as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom at the Atlantic Conference; one of only two known examples of this broadside specially printed at Churchill's direction and signed by both world leaders at their first wartime conference. One page the lithograph features the famed Henry Wadsworth Longfellow verse first used by FDR in a letter of support to Churchill before the United States entered the war and a galleon at sea. The letter sent the day before Roosevelt's third inauguration on January 20 1941 read in full "Dear Churchill Wendell Wilkie will give you this. He is truly helping to keep politics out over here. I think this verse applies to you people as it does to us: "Sail on Oh Ship of State! Sail on Oh Union strong and great. Humanity with all its fears With all the hope of future years Is hanging breathless on thy fate." As ever yours Franklin D. Roosevelt." "Roosevelt never made a more graceful or effective gesture than that" R. Sherwood Roosevelt and Hopkins 234. The letter and the verse were hand-carried by Wendell Wilkie to London and given by Hopkins to the Prime Minister. Churchill desperate for American support found the letter "an inspiration" had it framed and proudly displayed it at Chartwell for many years. In early August of 1941 Churchill had this decorative broadside printed and when he arrived in Newfoundland for the conference with the President he brought two copies to be signed "one for himself and one for the President" Warren F. Kimball Forged In War: Roosevelt Churchill and the Second World War 98. Signed by Roosevelt "Franklin D. Roosevelt" and Churchill "Winton S. Churchill." Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 22 inches by 20.5 inches. The last known example achieved $96000 in a 2008 auction. Scarce and desirable. The historic secret Atlantic Conference was held between August 9th and 12th 1941 on a warship anchored in Placentia Bay Newfoundland. At that momentous meeting the two leaders and their military aides agreed upon critical policies for the conduct of a joint war against Germany even though the U.S. was still officially neutral and would remain so until December 8. The meetings culminated in the Atlantic Charter a declaration of principles issued a few days after the conference. Often compared to Wilson's Fourteen Points the Charter also laid the foundation for the United Nations Declaration signed by 26 nations in January 1942. Raphael Tuck & Sons, Ltd. unknown

ROOSEVELT, Franklin D - SULLIVAN, William
Sea Life;
Boston: James B. Dow 1837. An advocate of American sailor's rights from FDR's library Only contemporary edition. Published three years before Dana's Two Years Before the Mast Sea Life exposes the abuses suffered by American sailors and proposes practical solutions. This copy with an excellent nautical provenance coming from the Hyde Park library of Franklin D. Roosevelt. A youthful admirer of A. T. Mahan FDR served as assistant secretary of the Navy 1913-20 and was "the most vigorous advocate of naval readiness ever to occupy the White House" Hull. Sullivan 1774-1839 who graduated from Harvard in 1792 and was admitted to the bar in 1795 dedicates this work to the Rev. Edward T. Taylor 1793-1871 "Father Taylor" the popular Boston Methodist minister whose experiences at sea well suited him to help guide the establishment and development of the Seamen's Bethel providing assistance advocacy and education for sailors and their families. As a lawyer Sullivan stresses that the laws already exist that would offer protection but that ignorance of their rights obstructs the seamen's access to just treatment "There is no business amnong men which is more exactly ordered by law than that which is done in ships and vessels. But there are a great number of those who follow the seas who know not what the law is nor where to look for it" p. 21. Sea Life was one of a number of books that Sullivan's wife's inheritance freed him to write perhaps the best known being his Moral and Political Class Books intended to offer a basis in "civics" for the higher classes in public schools. It seems from the inked note on the title page - "Mr. Dow owner of copyright" - that the rights may have passed to the publisher on Sullivan's death. Moderately well-represented institutionally - some 19 copies world-wide all but one Liverpool University in the United States - this is an uncommon book on the market with records showing just a couple of copies on dealer catalogues Goodspeed in 1906 and Eberstadt listing one "half morocco uncut" in 1965 at $100. The present copy has a superb provenance with the ownership inscription "Franklin D Roosevelt Hyde Park" to the front free endpaper annotated in his hand "Very fine copy" library ticket on the facing pastedown. FDR's love of "his Navy" is well-known as is the remarkable naval collection that forms part of his presidential library; the present little rarity in unrestored contemporary condition is a delightful encapsulation of that interest. Duodecimo. Engraved three-master vignette to the title page. Original dark greyish yellow paper-covered card wrappers unlettered. Lightly rubbed and soiled front joint cracking and starting at the tail but holding the occasional spot of foxing front and back light marginal toning but a very good copy. Sabin 93560. Michael D. Hull "FDR & His Mighty Navy" U.S. Naval Institute Naval History Magazine 33 1 February 2019. unknown

"Lodge was my closest friend personally politically and in every other way and occupied toward me a relationship that no other man has occupied or will occupy." -Theodore Roosevelt on Henry Cabot Lodge June 20 1900 Philadelphia

"Roosevelt's political alliance with Henry Cabot Lodge of Massachusetts began in 1884 when the two were delegates to the Republican National Convention in Chicago. In time both men would become leaders of the Republican Party. Their extensive mutual correspondence is an insightful record of shared interests and American idealism at the turn of the twentieth century. After serving in the United States House of Representatives for six years Lodge became a senator in 1893 and retained his seat for the rest of his life. Like Roosevelt Lodge was an advocate of civil service reform he recommended Roosevelt to be a commissioner in 1889 a strong navy the Panama Canal and pure food and drug legislation. A specialist in foreign affairs Lodge acted as one of Roosevelt's principal advisers during his presidency. Yet Lodge did not support many of Roosevelt's progressive reforms-women's suffrage for instance-and he refused to endorse his friend in the Bull Moose campaign of 1912." from National Prortrait Gallery. ROOSEVELT, ELEANOR; [STEVENSON, Adlai]; [MALIK, Hitindra]; [SPINGARN, Hope]; [SPINGARN, Joel Elias]; [SALINGER, Pierre]; [KENNED
SIGNED LETTER AND OTHER RELATED LETTERS AND EPHEMERA REGARDING INDIAN JOURNALIST HITINDRA MALIK
1944-1961. Original typed letter from Eleanor Roosevelt on headed notepaper dated March 8 1961 signed in blue ink to the foot to Adlai Stevenson regarding the visit of the Indian journalist Hitindra Malik to the USA. 18 x 15cm. WITH: A TLS from Pierre Salinger Press Secretary to President Kennedy to Malik on White House headed notepaper dated January 24 1961 regarding a meeting between the pair; two TLS from Sir George Cunningham Governor of North West Frontier Province India to Malik on headed notepaper providing a letter of recommendation; an Indian government permit to send messages from government telegraph offices in India to 'Newsweek' New York with charges paid by the recipient; and a newspaper clipping regarding Malik's marriage to an American woman - Hope Spingarn of Amenia NY - in Bombay in 1957. The Roosevelt letter with a horizontal mailing crease to the centre and a diagonal crease just below the signature is otherwise in very good order. The other items are similarly in very good condition. An interesting collection of items regarding the relationship of an Indian journalist Hitindra Malik with progressive politics in the USA including a signed letter from Eleanor Roosevelt to her close friend Adlai Stevenson attempting to arrange a meeting between the pair.

Hitindra Malik was born in Abbottabad North-West Frontier Province now Pakistan. The son of a prominent lawyer well-known for his work regarding civil-liberties Malik studied in Lahore before becoming the editor of the Indian newspaper the Near and Far East News. He certainly appears to have been a high-flyer as indicated by Governor Cunningham's letter of recommendation in the present collection "Intellectually he is very much above the average of the young men of this Province and if he fulfils the promise which he now shows he ought to do very well indeed".

In 1957 Malik married the American journalist and political activist Hope Spingarn in Bombay. Born in 1907 Spingarn had travelled extensively in her youth studying at Sweet Briar College the Sorbonne and the University of Grenoble subsequently working in Bombay as a public relations consultant to the Family Planning Association of India where she met Malik. A political progressive Spingarn was a supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt as well as being active within the civil rights movement. Indeed her father Joel Elias Spingarn the literary critic and professor at Columbia University had served as the second president of the NAACP and was one of its first Jewish leaders.

Two of the letters in the present group from Eleanor Roosevelt and Pierre Salinger press secretary to President John F. Kennedy dated 1961 relate to a visit by Malik to the U.S. with the apparent purpose of learning more about the new administration Salinger's letter is actually dated just four days after Kennedy took office. Likely through the influence of his wife Malik appears to have had close access to those at the top of progressive politics in the U.S. with the likes of Roosevelt Salinger and Adlai Stevenson - one of Roosevelt's most intimate friends and political allies now ambassador to the U.N. under Kennedy - warmly agreeing to host him and answer his questions.

As Roosevelt writes: "Dear Adlai: Mr. Hitindra Malik is married to an American and is here from India and doing an article on the philosophy of the new administration. He is leaving the U.S. on April 7th and is most anxious to see you sometime soon. I have no idea if you have the time to see Mr. Malik but if you have I know he would be deeply appreciative. With my good wishes Affectionately Eleanor Roosevelt".

A fascinating insight into the lives of a politically-active husband and wife - one from India the other from New York State - and their involvement in progressive politics and journalism.

Hope Spingarn's diaries are now held by the Beinecke Library Yale University. unknown
