The McKinley and Roosevelt Administrations 1897-1909.

Octavo bound in full morocco by Zaehnsdorf gilt titles and ruling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles marbled endpapers all edges gilt illustrated. In fine condition. The presidency of William McKinley began on March 4 1897 when McKinley was inaugurated and ended on September 14 1901 upon his assassination. A longtime Republican McKinley is best known for conducting the successful Spanish–American War 1898 freeing Cuba from Spain; taking ownership of the Republic of Hawaii; and purchasing the Philippines Guam and Puerto Rico. Theodore Roosevelt assumed the presidency at age 42 following McKinley's assassination and remains the youngest person to become president of the United States. As a leader of the progressive movement he championed his "Square Deal" domestic policies. It called for fairness for all citizens breaking of bad trusts regulation of railroads and pure food and drugs. Roosevelt prioritized conservation and established national parks forests and monuments to preserve the nation's natural resources. In foreign policy he focused on Central America where he began construction of the Panama Canal. Roosevelt expanded the Navy and sent the Great White Fleet on a world tour to project American naval power. His successful efforts to broker the end of the Russo-Japanese War won him the 1906 Nobel Peace Prize. Roosevelt was elected to a full term in 1904 and promoted policies more to the left despite growing opposition from Republican leaders. He groomed his close ally William Howard Taft to succeed him in the 1908 presidential election. The Macmillan Company unknown

Rice G. Garland, Editor; Preface By Theodore Roosevelt
Third Annual Report of the Municipal Court of Philadelphia: For the Year 1916 January 1 To December 31 Inclusive
Fair with no dust jacket. Hardcover. No publication data is included but we can assume that this was published by the Municipal Court in Philadelphia in 1917. The text is clean and the binding is holding but the covers are stained the corners are worn and the book has met with a bit of moisture which has caused some staining along the edges of the pages not affecting the text. The content however is fascinating. The courts involved are domestic family juvenile civil and criminal but criminal is given less weight here than the others. This is not just a record of court hearings trials and the like. It is primarily a collection of analyses of the social status of various sorts of offenders and charts showing an amazing array of statistics regarding matters brought before family court called domestic relations court at that time such as the reasons for divorcing or for bringing domestic abuse charges alcoholism leads by a mile or for cases involving the legitimacy of children or child abandonment. Juvenile court is likewise dissected. You will learn a great deal about the social structure of Philadelphia from this book homely though it is. Theodore Roosevelt's preface was reprinted from the May 1917 issue of Metropolitan Magazine. . hardcover

Ritzenthaler, Pat ; [Kermit "Kim" Roosevelt, Jr.'s copy]
THE FON OF BAFUT
New York: Thomas Y. Crowell. Very Good. 1966. Paperback. xii 221 pages; Former owner's name boldly signed on half-title - "Kim Roosevelt" otherwise clean and tight in original pictorial wrappers. Includes a glossary and an index customary life pattern of an African culture in Cameroon. Written by an archaeology couple describing the chief monarch Fon of Bafut first introduced by Geral Durrell's "the Bafut Beagles." The Fon an impressive complex figure represents a significant link between the old Africa and the new. Kermit "Kim" Roosevelt Jr. 1916 - 2000 was the grandson of President Theodore Roosevelt. He was a career intelligence officer who served in the Office of Strategic Services and operated throughout the Near and Middle East for the CIA in the 1950s and 1960s. In Egypt under Allen Dulles Kim Roosevelt supervised the CIA's operation to undermine the popular General Neguib and encourage the rise to power of Gamul Abdul Nasser. Even before his decisive victory Nasser was communicating through Roosevelt to make a settlement with Great Britain. These back-channel negotiations eventually produced the treaty signed in October 1954. Nasser ascended and for the next decade Egypt's relations with the West moved along a sometimes rocky road. By 1965 relations had significantly deteriorated and Nasser was quite worried the CIA was plotting to assassinate him. After the Odell-Amin case broke the CIA began to look for "more West friendly" Egyptian elements. Their attention landed on the Muslim Brotherhood which according to Talcott Seelye "We thought of Islam as a counterweight to communism. We saw it as a moderate force and a positive one." In fact the CIA was spending millions of dollars on anti-Nasser operations including an extensive propaganda campaign. Roosevelt was also the mastermind of the Central Intelligence Agency's Operation Ajax which orchestrated the coup against Iran's democratically-elected Mohammed Mossadegh administration and returned Mohammad Reza Pahlavi the Shah of Iran to Iran's Peacock Throne in August 1953 for the purpose of returning Western control of Middle Eastern oil supplies. In the 1961 Kermit Roosevelt Jr. took his two older sons Kermit and Jonathan on a month long safari to Africa. Having studied AFRICAN GAME TRAILS T.R.'s famous account of that earlier safari in 1910 he and his sons set out to retrace its tracks. Aided by Life magazine these Roosevelts roughed it in safari camps much as Theodore Roosevelt and his son Kermit had fifty years earlier. ; Signed by Notable Personage Unrelated . Thomas Y. Crowell paperback
