From the library of Roosevelt confidant Otto Bremer. Folio a-z aa-oo 2-384pp 2pp ads. Full mottled brown steerhide gilt-lettered title on cover. Silk endpapers gilt top edge. Occasional toning to leaves bookplate removed from front free endpaper. Presidential newspaper articles affixed to the rear endpapers. Multiple color advertisements throughout. At the 1932 Democratic National Convention Bremer with James Farley brought Franklin D. Roosevelt's nomination to the floor helping secure Roosevelt's first presidential nomination and later his presidency. This book was published by the Democratic National Committee to raise funds for the party. It was sold for $250 which marked the first time a sitting president had actively helped raise funds for a political party. It created a minor scandal at the time with Republicans attempting to exploit it to their political advantage during the 1936 election. Halter T-119 According to Halter it was likely printed in 1937 and mailed to supporters who contributed. Democratic National Committee unknown

ROOSEVELT, Franklin Delano - POLK, James K
The Diary of James K. Polk during his Presidency 1845-1849.
Chicago: A. C. McClurg & Co. 1910. A president's diary from a president's library First edition from the library of FDR with his ownership inscription to the front free endpaper of the first volume "Franklin Delano Roosevelt Hyde Park" beneath the presentation inscription from his favourite uncle Frederic Adrian Delano Roosevelt: "Frederic A. Delano acquired at Chicago in 1910 - Taken to Algonac in 1918 - given to The President July 27 / 41". Frederic - his Algonac bookplate is to the front pastedown facing the inscriptions - was an opinionated Harvard-educated ex-railroad strike-breaker and manager turned public servant. Franklin formed a close friendship with his uncle as a boy and later as president appointed him chairman of the National Resources Planning Board a position he held for ten years. The diary of the 11th US president James K. Polk was the first presidential diary to be published and contains extensive details of Polk's stewardship of the nation in the Mexican-American War. In his first annual message to Congress James Polk reiterated the Monroe Doctrine against European interference on the North American continent. During the dispute with Mexico following the annexation of Texas he took decisive action advancing US forces into discordant territory. When Mexican troops struck back the Jacksonian Democrat used that incident as justification for asking Congress to declare war over the opposition of his Whig opponents. When Roosevelt received his book in the summer of 1941 a few months before Pearl Harbour the nation was similarly divided over committing to war and Roosevelt was perhaps looking to his predecessors for guidance. The book was also surely of personal interest: Roosevelt was very close to Frank Polk a relation of James K. Polk. Frank was undersecretary of State when Roosevelt was assistant secretary of the Navy and the Polks and the Roosevelts socialized often. From the collection of distinguished Roosevelt collector Donald Scott Carmichael with his bookplate to the inner chemises. 4 vols octavo. Original brown quarter cloth printed paper spine labels blue paper-covered sides. Housed in grey chemises within black quarter morocco slipcase. Pencilled annotations in the preface in an uncertain hand. Spines uniformly darkened with one label creased peripheral rubbing; a very good set. hardcover

Roosevelt, Theodore
The Foes of Our Own Household.
New York: George H. Doran Company 1917. First edition third issue of Roosevelt's call to arms rallying the United States to engage in World War I. Octavo original publisher's cloth. Association copy inscribed by Theodore Roosevelt on the front free endpaper to his younger sister in the year of publication "To darling Corinne from her brother Sept 19th 1917." Theodore Roosevelt Jr. was the second of four children born to socialite Martha Stewart Bulloch and businessman and philanthropist Theodore Roosevelt Sr. He had an older sister Anna a younger brother Elliott and a younger sister Corinne. Corinne began writing at an early age through the encouragement of her friends in particular Edith Wharton who helped critique her poetry. In 1911 Robinson published her first poem "The Call of Brotherhood" in Scribner's Magazine. Her first book of poems of the same title was published in 1912. Corinne was also a member of the executive committee of the Republican National Committee and the New York State Republican Committee.29 During the election of 1920 Robinson became the first woman ever called upon to second the nomination of a national party convention candidate; speaking before a crowd of 14000 she endorsed General Leonard Wood as the 1920 Republican candidate for president. Despite being a prominent Republican Corinne voted for her fifth cousin and nephew-in-law Franklin when he ran for Governor of New York in 1928 and in 1932 when he was elected President of the United States. Very good in the rare original dust jacket which is in very good condition. "A compact presentation of some of the evils in our national life for whose eradication the best thoughts and energies of our people will be necessary. The earliest chapters voice an impassioned appeal to all Americans men women and children to take up each his or her own share of the burden of the war and do whatever work is possible with zeal and efficiency. He lashes with indignation all those 'whether Senators Congressman editors or professed humanitarians' who continue to champion Germany's cause and tells them they are moral if not legal traitors and have no right longer to be treated as American citizens" "Col. Roosevelt on Foes of Our Own Household" The New York Times Book Review Sunday October 7 1917 p. 48. George H. Doran Company hardcover
