‎Schwimmer, Rosika [Eleanor Roosevelt]‎

‎Tisza Tales.‎

‎Garden City NY: Doubleday Doran and Company Inc 1928. First edition of this enchanting work of Hungarian folklore. Octavo original publisher's cloth with gilt titles and detailing to the spine and front panel pictorial endpapers frontispiece with an additional illustrated title page illustrated with color plates and black and white plates by Willy Pogány. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the title page "To Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt for her White House Juvenile Library with admiration for her activities on behalf of children Rosika Schwimmer March 1933." The recipient Eleanor Roosevelt was a political figure diplomat and activist. She was the longest-serving first lady of the United States during her husband Franklin D. Roosevelt’s four terms as president from 1933 to 1945. Through her travels public engagement and advocacy she largely redefined the role. Widowed in 1945 she served as a United States Delegate to the United Nations General Assembly from 1945 to 1952 and took a leading role in designing the text and gaining international support for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 1948 she was given a standing ovation by the assembly upon their adoption of the declaration. President Harry S. Truman later called her the “First Lady of the World†in tribute to her human rights achievements. In very good condition with light rubbing. Rosika Schwimmer was a pioneering Hungarian feminist pacifist and suffragist who played a significant role in early 20th-century international peace movements. Born in 1877 she was an outspoken advocate for women's rights and world peace co-founding organizations such as the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. Schwimmer became the world's first female ambassador when she was appointed to represent Hungary in Switzerland in 1918. While she is best known for her activism The Tisza Tales demonstrates her literary contributions and her efforts to connect Hungarian traditions with broader audiences. Rooted in Hungarian folklore the tales reflect Schwimmer's interest in cultural preservation and her commitment to promoting social values through literature. This major history of the Royal Navy from earliest times to the close of the Victorian era was originally intended to be complete in five volumes then six volumes were envisaged and finally a seventh volume was produced in order to bring the study down to the death of Queen Victoria and to include recent naval actions during the South African War and the Boxer Rebellion in China. He gives full particulars of every officer on the Navy List in 1763 and of every officer to have reached Flag Rank thereafter. Appendices provide statistical details of every ship lost by the Royal Navy from 1660 and every enemy man-o'-war captured by the Royal Navy from 1714. ‎Smith, Bradley F ; [Kermit "Kim" Roosevelt Jr's copy]‎

‎SHADOW WARRIORS - O.S.S. and the Origins of the C.I.A.‎

‎New York: Basic Books. 1983. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. Autograph; 8vo; xvi 507 pages; Contents clean and secure in original black cloth binding in very good dustjacket with closed tear at top edge of front panel now in protective mylar cover; some minor rippling of last few leaves near inner bottom. Former owner's signature and address on ffep -- "Kermit Roosevelt . Nov. 7 1983" with a couple page numbers and notes in his writing including "a very opinionated pretentious and misleading 'history' !" He also comments on Smith's dismissal of effectiveness of covert ops what about Iran 1953. Roosevelt would have been intimately familiar with many of the operations and organizational developments described in this survey of the nation's first intelligence agency. Kermit "Kim" Roosevelt Jr. 1916 - 2000 was the grandson of President Theodore Roosevelt. He was a career intelligence officer who served in the Office of Strategic Services and was the mastermind of the Central Intelligence Agency's Operation Ajax which orchestrated the coup against Iran's democratically-elected Mohammed Mossadegh administration and returned Mohammad Reza Pahlavi the Shah of Iran to Iran's Peacock Throne in August 1953 for the purpose of returning Western control of Middle Eastern oil supplies. Assigned to Egypt Roosevelt impressed his colleagues with Project FF which encouraged the Free Officers Movement to carry out a coup d'état in 1952 and Roosevelt developed close CIA links to the new leader Gamal Abdel Nasser. In Egypt under Allen Dulles Kim Roosevelt supervised the CIA's operation to undermine the popular General Neguib and encourage the rise to power of Gamul Abdul Nasser. Even before his decisive victory Nasser was communicating through Roosevelt to make a settlement with Great Britain. These back channel negotiations eventually produced the treaty signed in October 1954. Hugh Wilford: "Roosevelt Jr. had this notion of America forming an alliance with the Arab countries as they emerged from under the sway of Britain and France. He was very concerned with backing Arab nationalists in the region. He saw that as the best way of keeping it within the American orbit as the Cold War was gathering momentum." The Eisenhower administration including Secretary of State John Foster Dulles was initially quite sympathetic towards the Arabist agenda of Roosevelt's and his colleagues and willing to oppose Middle Eastern regimes seen "as backing the Soviet Union rather than the U.S." In discussing Roosevelt's role Wilford describes him as being among "the most important intelligence officers of their generation in the Middle East." This is an account of the nation’s first intelligence agency the Office of Special Services O.S.S. — how it operated what it accomplished and how it laid the basis for the present Central Intelligence Agency — and how its charismatic founder “Wild Bill” Donovan established control over it recruited its staff and most importantly sold Roosevelt the armed services the Allies and the rest of the country on the agency’s varied — and often bizarre — shadow warfare missions during World War II. The O.S.S.’s special relationship with the British the key role of academics and its embarrassing connection with the Soviets’ N.K.V.D. are also addressed. Smith concludes that the creation of the C.I.A. after the war owed less to the accomplishments of the O.S.S. than to Donovan’s public relations skills and the precarious military situation the country found itself in at the time.“Mr. Smith. has done an exhaustive job of research on the O.S.S. and Donovan. the book offers an honest lively portrait of an important American and the contributions good and bad that he and the O.S.S. made to the American intelligence system. Much of this book can be read for the pleasure of observing a genuine American character in action. Mr. Smith who does not fawn on his subject captures Donovan’s kinetic energy and vision.” — Philip Taubman The New York Times“This may be as close to a definitive medium-length history of OSS as we are likely to get. It draws fully on the extensive original files now available both American and British and on the recent flood of secondary writing. The author has a sure grasp of the basic history of the war. His narrative chapters put OSS firmly into that wider context and his perspectives and judgments ring true. And there are excellent chapters on the usually neglected Research and Analysis section and on the relations between OSS and Soviet intelligence agencies. an important book.” — Foreign Affairs; Signed by Notable Personage Related . ‎Three volumes. pp. 167; 192; 183. Frontis and titles engraved by Bicknell. Large 8vo.Original vellum backed boards. Top edge gold. Limited to only 400 copies. Engraved Ex Libris of Truman H. Newberry. Fine English text edition issued by the Bibliophile Society The owner of this set Truman H. Newberry was a Secretary of the Navy under Theodore Roosevelt. He was elected to the Senate in 1918. On Mar ch 20, 1920, Newberry was convicted on charges of spending $3,750 to secure his Senate election (quite amazing, considering modern ideas about expenditures to secure political office). The U.S. Supreme Court overturned this decision (May 2, 1921) on the grounds that the U.S. Senate exceeded its powers in attempting to regulate primary elections. By a vote of 46 to 41 (January 12, 1922), the Senate declared Newberry to have been duly elected in 1918. On November 18, two days before the start of the 3rd session of the 67th Congress, Newberry resigned as certain members resumed their efforts to unseat him. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W118‎

"The purpose of The Roosevelt Pilgrimage is to perpetuate the ideals of Theodore Roosevelt by an annual visit to his grave with simple and appropriate ceremony. The idea first suggested itself to Mr. E. A. Van Valkenburg of the Philadelphia North American. In the autumn of 1920 in response to a letter sent to some of Colonel Roosevelt's old friends and supporters signed by Messrs. James R. Garfield Gifford Pinchot Herbert Knox Smith E.A. Van Valkenburg and Lawrence F. Abbott a small group went to Oyster Bay on the morning of January 6 1921 . The cheerful log-fire burning on the hearth was indicative of the spirit of the meeting -- a spirit of happiness and gratefulness that Roosevelt had lived had impressed his influence on his country and had admitted the members of the group to intimacy and friendship with him" Foreword. ‎Stratton, Arthur ; [Signed] ; [Kermit "Kim" Roosevelt, Jr]‎

‎ONE MAN'S INDIA Inscribed by author to Kermit "Kim" Roosevelt Jr. -- from one spy to another spy‎

‎New York: W. W. Norton. 1955. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good in Very Good- dust jacket. Autograph; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 282 pages; Inscribed on ffep from the author to Kermit Roosevelt -- For Kermit Roosevelt / from / Arthur Stratton / with a good deal / of pleasure in / the gift. / 1956" from one spy to another spy. Clean and tight in original binding in dustjacket with tears and chipping now in mylar cover. The author and the recipient were both key intelligence officers in the Office of Strategic Services precursor to the Central Intelligence Agency. In addition to being an interesting travel writer and novelist Arthur Stratton was also an intelligence agent with the OSS. In 1942 while serving as an ambulance driver with the Free French Forces in the Eighth Army commanded by Montgomery he was very severely wounded more than ten times while evacuating wounded soldiers at Bir Hakeim in the Libyan Desert. After recovering from these wounds he was recruited by the OSS and relocated to Turkey where he taught English in Istanbul. He later worked for the CIA for ten years often returning to Turkey where he likely encountered Ambassador George McGhee who played a role with Roosevelt in the coup against Mossadegh. This book was his first major publishing success.; Signed by Author . W. W. Norton hardcover‎
