Signed by the President and his editor First edition in the deluxe binding inscribed by the 32nd President on the front free endpaper of the first volume "For Samuel Falk from Franklin D. Roosevelt" and additionally inscribed by the editor "For my friend Sam Falk with regards from Samuel I. Rosenman". Falk whose bookplate is on the front free endpapers was a New York attorney and prominent lay figure at the Congregation Rodeph Sholom synagogue later serving as its president. The editor Rosenman 1896-1973 was a fellow lawyer and a leading spokesman for the New York Jewish community. He served as Roosevelt's speechwriter from 1928 to 1945 coining the term "New Deal" and helping Roosevelt to articulate and conceptualize his program. Roosevelt was closely involved in the publication of his papers and addresses contributing the introductions and notes. It is "one of the most interesting authoritative and historically valuable works of its kind ever published. Roosevelt's copious notes explain in many instances the purpose behind his words and the eventual objectives to be obtained followed by a very human analysis of what actually happened. These illuminating comments bind the material into an integrated whole that becomes in effect a running history of the Roosevelt administration by FDR himself" Halter p. 133. Since the set was issued over a period of 12 years by 3 different publishers the bindings present some slight variations as described below. Overall the set is illustrated with several photographs and facsimiles of letters and documents. It is internally bright and clean and complete.<br /> <br /> Random House issued the first 5 volumes in 2 similar but slightly different bindings. Ours is a mixed set with Volumes 1245 in blue cloth with gilt lettered spines and Roosevelt's blind embossed signature on the front cover. Vols. 3 has Roosevelt's signature in gilt and its spine lettering on a black label. Volumes 6 7 8 and 9 are similar to Vol. 3 but were published by Macmillan and are housed in the publisher's cardboard slipcase. Volumes 10 11 12 and 13 are also similar to Vol. 3 but without Roosevelt's signature on the front cover.
