Eleanor Roosevelt
It's Up to the Women

New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company 1933. First edition. Hardcover. This is a first edition of Eleanor Roosevelts first book Its Up to the Women. Eleanor published this book in 1933 concurrent with the first inauguration of her husband Franklin D. Roosevelt in part as a declaration of her intended transformative approach to the role of First Lady.

This example is a strikingly bright and clean fine example in a very good minus dust jacket. The light teal cloth binding printed in dark teal and black is beautifully clean square and tight with sharp corners and no appreciable wear. The contents are likewise remarkably clean free of spotting or previous ownership marks. The deckled fore and bottom edges are likewise immaculate. The top edge shows only a trivial hint of shelf dust. The dust jacket is unclipped retaining the original $1.25 front flap price and substantially complete with only fractional loss to the joint and flap fold extremities. The jacket is also notably clean. There is a 1.5 inch 3.81 cm closed tear with attendant wrinkling to the lower right of the front face and light overall wear to the extremities and joints. The spine is evenly toned but the blue title and author print a notably unliberated Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt remains clearly legible. The dust jacket is protected beneath a clear removable archival cover.

Called First Lady of the World by President Truman for her humanitarian work Eleanor Roosevelt 1884-1962 was the first US Representative to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights a prolific writer including dozens of books hundreds of articles and editorials and a daily newspaper column from 1936-1962 and the longest-serving first lady of the United States.

When her husband Franklin Delano Roosevelt was running for president in the fall of 1932 as the likely election winner Eleanor had already independently made for herself a name in Democratic politics as a spokesperson for the newly enfranchised woman voter labor advocate in the midst of the Great Depression a vocal promoter of civil rights and the head of the Womens Division of the Democratic National Committee since 1928. She feared her impending role as First Lady a heretofore purely social and apolitical role would necessitate a quieting of her convictions and force her to step down from her political positions; she even told friends that she would divorce FDR should he win rather than lose her independence.

After FDRs unprecedented victory securing 42 of 48 states Eleanor made the decision to transform her new position rather than yield to it. In January she announced that she would write and publish a book before the March inauguration. The result was Its Up to the Women which was as The Hartford Courant called it a book of general counsel and advice on pretty well everything from dish-washing to high diplomacy. Topics ranged from recipes for hot stuffed eggs to advice for women in negotiating salaries equal to their male counterparts to counsel for women seeking public office. Critically Eleanor tied her husbands promise of a New Deal to the civic engagement of the American woman. She wrote If women are really going to awake to their civic duties then we may indeed be seeing the realization of a really new deal for the people. p.201
Frederick A. Stokes Company hardcover

Progressive Era Politics and Art Eleanor Roosevelt Provenance Stettheimer Catalog 1946 Linking Feminism and Cultural Patronage
1946. McBride Henry. Florine Stettheimer Exhibition Catalog 1946 documents the critical reception of a modern American artist whose work intersected with progressive political and cultural circles closely associated with Eleanor Roosevelt. Stettheimer's paintings including Cathedrals of Wall Street 1939 engaged themes of social life economic power and public identity often incorporating figures aligned with reformist politics. Eleanor Roosevelt's documented association with Stettheimer's work situates the catalog within a network of mid-twentieth-century cultural production shaped by advocacy for women's rights racial equality and social welfare. The volume supports research into American modernist art political patronage and the intersection of cultural and reform movements in the New Deal and postwar periods.

McBride Henry. Florine Stettheimer Exhibition Catalog. New York: Simon and Schuster 1946. First edition. Quarto volume measuring approximately 7.75" x 10.25" 56 pages illustrated with 36 black and white plates and 4 color plates. Retains original pink dust jacket. Copy from the personal library of Eleanor Roosevelt bearing her bookplate and an estate label reading "Estate of Eleanor Roosevelt No. 2943 Hyde Park NY." Signed by her son John A. Roosevelt. The catalog includes reproductions of Stettheimer's works including Cathedrals of Wall Street which features a representation of Roosevelt underscoring the connection between artist and subject.

Published shortly after Stettheimer's death the catalog reflects a moment when American modernist artists were increasingly recognized within institutional and public contexts while also preserving the social networks that linked artists patrons and political figures. Stettheimer's engagement with themes of gender class and urban life paralleled Roosevelt's public advocacy situating the volume within a broader cultural milieu that bridged art and progressive reform. Provenance linking the book to Roosevelt's personal library strengthens its relevance for studies of collecting practices cultural influence and the role of political figures in shaping artistic reception. Dust jacket chipped with tear at spine; light sunning; minor wear to binding; bookplate detached but present; pages clean; overall in very good condition. unknown

On April 25 1945 as Allied victory drew close representatives of the member states met in San Francisco to write a treaty for a postwar UN that could arbitrate international disputes without conflict and prevent another world cataclysm. President Truman said to the opening of the conference “The world has experienced a revival of an old faith in the everlasting moral force of justice. At no time in history has there been a more important Conference or a more necessary meeting than this one in San Francisco which you are opening today. On behalf of the American people I extend to you a most hearty welcome.†Americans followed news of the proceedings in San Francisco with intense interest.

""On June 26 50 nations signed the new United Nations Charter the founding document of the largest international organization in world history. In a preamble and 19 chapters the Charter lays out the rules and structure of the UN and describes how the body works for global peace security and human rights. President Truman closed the United Nations Conference on that day with hope for the promise and possibility of the new international organization: “Upon all of us in all our countries is now laid the duty of transforming into action these words which you have written. Upon our decisive action rests the hope of those who have fallen those now living those yet unborn — the hope for a world of free countries — with decent standards of living — which will work and cooperate in a friendly civilized community of nations. This new structure of peace is rising upon strong foundations. Let us not fail to grasp this supreme chance to establish a world-wide rule of reason — to create an enduring peace under the guidance of God.â€

""On July 2 President Truman brought a copy of the Charter into the Senate and gave a plainspoken yet heartfelt address urging ratification. Truman – once a senator himself – reminded Congress that the people of the world were watching them. “For they look to this body of elected representatives of the people of the United States to take the lead in approving the Charter…and pointing the way for the rest of the world.†The stakes were high Truman noted. Twice in the past 30 years the world’s leaders had failed to avoid bloodshed. “This Charter points down the only road to enduring peace†Truman proclaimed. “There is no other.†On August 8 after the Senate ratified the United Nations Charter President Truman signed it and the United States becomes the first nation to complete the ratification process and join the new international organization. Other nations followed suit and the Charter went into effect on October 24 1945.

""Although the United Nations was founded in 1945 it took several years to select a site and build its headquarters in New York. In fact the first meetings of the Security Council took place at Church House in Westminster London. Following that the Security Council met in New York but not on the current site of UNHQ or even in the temporary headquarters at Lake Success on Long Island New York. For five months from March 25 to August 15 1946 Hunter College in the Bronx currently Lehman College was its home.""

<img class=""alignnone wp-image-32508 size-post-window"" src=""https://cdn.raabcollection.com/wp-content/uploads/20241104183613/United-Nations-March-25-1946-1-2-1600x1175.jpg"" alt="""" width=""1600"" height=""1175"" />

The Iran crisis of 1946 was one of the first crises of the Cold War sparked by the refusal of Joseph Stalin's Soviet Union to relinquish occupied Iranian territory despite repeated assurances. The end of World War II should have resulted in the end of the Allied joint occupation of Iran. Instead pro-Soviet Iranians proclaimed the separatist Azerbaijan People's Government and the Kurdish separatist Republic of Mahabad. The United Nations was slightly more than one year old and the location of the permanent Headquarters had yet to be decided. In the interim the Organization needed a large space to accommodate the hundreds of attendees to the General Assembly. New York City offered the use of its former World’s Fair building in Queens. The 1939 New York World's Fair saw more than 45 million visitors many of whom entered this building to see the exhibits on the functions of the city. When it was over the building was converted into a recreation centre with skating rinks until being offered to the United Nations in April 1946. The first General Assembly in New York had “One World†as its theme. To emphasize this fact a large map of the world in blue and gold was installed behind the President of the General Assembly’s rostrum.

Outside the flags of the then 51 Member States were put on the longest poles which could be procured and placed in a large circle. Eleanor Roosevelt
This I Remember signed by James Roosevelt eldest son of the author and President Franklin D. Roosevelt

New York: Harper & Brothers 1949. First edition. Hardcover. This first edition of Eleanor Roosevelts 1884-1962 memoir spanning her husbands governorship of New York to his death in 1945 at the beginning of his fourth presidential term is signed James Roosevelt by her son on the front free endpaper recto.

The binding is medium blue cloth with a dark blue spine label printed in gilt and bracketed by triple gilt rules and with Eleanor Roosevelts facsimile signature in black on the lower front cover. The contents feature deckled fore edges. An illustrated dust jacket in red gold white and black features a portrait of Eleanor by Yousuf Karsh on the front face.

Condition is very good in a very good dust jacket. The blue cloth binding is square and tight with sharp corners. The chief defects are light overall mottling of the cloth and minor shelf wear to extremities. The contents remain respectably bright with no spotting and no previous ownership marks other than the authors sons signature. Lest there be any doubt FIRST EDITION is helpfully printed on the copyright page. Differential toning of the endpapers and pastedowns corresponding to the dust jacket flaps confirms that this copy has spent life jacketed. The dust jacket is unclipped retaining the original $4.50 front flap price and substantially complete with only fractional chipping to the joint and flap fold extremities. The jacket shows light overall scuffing mild spine toning and modest edge wear and is newly fitted with a clear removable archival cover.

James Roosevelt 1907-1991 was the eldest son of Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt. James made a substantial fortune in the insurance industry before serving as an aid to his father. During the Second World War James served in secret diplomatic missions before requesting reassignment to combat duty where he became a decorated U.S. Marine. James later served five terms as a U.S. Congressman from California 1955-1965 after which he became United States representative to the United Nations Economic and Social Council and subsequently an executive with the Investors Overseas Services before it collapsed after embezzlement. During his long life four marriages and sometimes scandal-plagued career James tried his hand at a number of professions including both Hollywood producer and author.

This I Remember picks up where Eleanors earlier memoir This Is My Story left off. What differentiates Eleanors biographies from those of many other prominent figures is that each word was actually composed by her. A favorable New York Times review said it is shockingly delightful to read a book which could have been written by absolutely no one else in the world than the great and important figure whose name is signed to it which is flavorful characteristic and moving. Prior to its publication through McCalls Eleanor offered the manuscript to Ladies Home Journal which profitably serialized This Is My Story. However the editors were dissatisfied with the writing in the manuscript and suggested that she take on a collaborator to write it. She declined and McCalls published it instead to commercial success.

When her husband Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected in 1932 Eleanor had already made a name for herself in Democratic politics. Eleanor decided to transform the hitherto mostly social and apolitical role of First Lady. And after her husbands death Eleanor did not withdraw into widowhood. It was her husbands successor President Harry S. Truman who called Eleanor First Lady of the World for her humanitarian work. Eleanor became the first US Representative to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights and remained a prolific writer including dozens of books hundreds of articles and editorials and a daily newspaper column from 1936-1962. Transcending her role as mere first lady Eleanor became a fearless international champion of progressive causes and perhaps the most influential American woman of the twentieth century. Eleanor Roosevelt
This I Remember

"First Lady of the World" is how President Harry Truman referred to Eleanor Roosevelt. At roughly the same time J. Edgar Hoover thought Eleanor might be a Communist. But as author and intellectual Garry Wills wrote "there was nothing radical about her either in temperament or principle. She would not join in civil rights activities if they included civil disobedience."

Eleanor Roosevelt beautifully signed card with The White House Washington engraved in top right corner see picture. Card is very neatly mounted on half title page. Book is very good condition generally toned throughout and price clipped. Dust jacket also very good with tears on top of binding and smaller chips on bottom of binding. Front and back of dust jacket are in very good condition see pictures. Protected by Brodart book jacket cover.

"This I Remember" is Eleanor Roosevelt's recollections of the years preceding FDR's first term as Governor Of NYS to the day of his death during his 4th term as President of the United States. She is considered by many to be America's most inspiring and influential first lady. She stated "When you cease to make a contribution you begin to die."

The arrival of Eleanor Roosevelt as First Lady transformed the post into its current energetic activist incarnation. Despite leaving The White House more than 75 years ago Eleanor Roosevelt is still ranked first among all other women who have served as America's First Ladies.

Another of her most famous quotes was a remark she made to VP Harry Truman. Truman had been Vice President for 82 days when President Roosevelt died on April 12 1945. Truman presiding over the Senate as usual had just adjourned the session for the day and was preparing to have a drink in House Speaker Sam Rayburn's office when he received an urgent message to go immediately to the White House where Eleanor Roosevelt told him that her husband had died after a massive cerebral hemorrhage. Truman asked her if there was anything he could do for her; she replied "Is there anything we can do for you For you are the one in trouble now!"

Mrs. Roosevelt took up many different social and cultural causes during her travels across the nation holding press conferences hosting radio programs and writing newspaper columns along the way.

Harper & Brothers hardcover

Eleanor Roosevelt
This Is My Story signed by Eleanor Roosevelt
New York: Harper & Brothers 1937. First edition second printing. Hardcover. This is a signed first edition presumed second printing of the first of Eleanor Roosevelts biographical writings followed by 1949s This I Remember and 1958s On My Own. On the half title page below the printed title she signed Eleanor Roosevelt in black ink. The copyright page neither explicitly states First Edition nor makes mention of further printings. Since we have observed that the third printing was so-stated on the copyright page we speculate that this is a second printing of the first edition.

Condition is good plus in a good plus dust jacket. The light blue cloth binding is square tight and unfaded though slightly mottled with shelf wear including a few dents to the bottom edges and a hint of sunning to the edges where sun snuck past the dust jacket. The publishers name HARPER is ghosted onto the spine from the dust jacket. The contents are clean with no previous ownership marks and light spotting confined to the endpapers. Differential toning of the endpapers corresponding to the dust jacket flaps confirms that this copy has spent life jacketed. The dust jacket front flap is neatly price-clipped but the jacket is otherwise substantially complete and respectably bright with only the slight color shift between the gold and blue fields on the spine and front face. The jacket shows edge wear and moderate overall scuffing most notably a roughly 1.25 x 1 inch 3.18 x 2.54 cm abrasion to the upper left of the front face not affecting any text or images. The dust jacket is protected beneath a clear removable archival cover.

This first of Eleanor Roosevelts memoirs covers her early years and family up until the 1924 Democratic Convention and was originally serialized in Ladies Home Journal. The book was written in 1936 and published in 1937. Herein Eleanor simply and frankly discloses her personal narrative and gives cause and context to the liberal influence which anchored her life and politics.

She did so and in so doing
she became a fearless international champion of progressive causes and perhaps the most influential American woman of the twentieth century. ANB.

Eleanors famous partnership with Franklin D. Roosevelt ended with FDRs death in April 1945 at the start of his fourth presidential term. Of that partnership Eleanor wrote in This I Remember He might have been happier with a wife who had been completely uncritical
Nonetheless I think that I sometimes acted as a spur even though the spurring was not always wanted
She could as easily be speaking of her relationship with the world which she loved as earnestly as she goaded undaunted by its challenges and disappointments.

Harper & Brothers hardcover
