Foran, W Robert ; [Signed] ; [Kermit "Kim" Roosevelt, Jr]
A BREATH OF THE WILDS
London: Robert Hale. 1958. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good in Very Good- dust jacket. Autograph; 8vo; Contents clean and secure in original green cloth binding with gilt lettering at spine and in very good dustjacket with two large chips at bottom edges and chipping at head of spine. Inscribed and Signed on ffep by the author to Kim Roosevelt dated June 25th 1960. The author Major Robert Foran 1881-1968 was one of the first four European police officers in Kenya an extensive traveller and big game hunter in Africa India Burma Ceylon US Canada and Mexico; and a journalist special correspondent and editor. For the first five years in the wild he hunted with a rifle but subsequently his hunting was done with a camera. This book gives a record of his personal observations of wild animals in Africa. Foran had a long and wonderful adventurous life. His passion was big game hunting and bagged numerous trophies from around the world. He was one of the first officials in charge of the Kenya Police and after years of wanderings as a journalist he finally settled down in Nanyuki Kenya about 145 miles north of Nairobi. Author of several books including ELEPHANT HUNTERS OF LADO KILL OR BE KILLEDKENYA POLICE A CUCKOO IN KENYA and many others In this volume he recalls his experiences as a big game hunter in Africa and his bagging the Big-5 Elephant Lion Buffalo Leopard and Rhino in addition to many other large mammals and crocodiles. PROVENANCE: Kermit "Kim" Roosevelt Jr. 1916 - 2000 was the grandson of President Theodore Roosevelt. He was a career intelligence officer who served in the Office of Strategic Services and operated throughout the Near and Middle East for the CIA in the 1950s and 1960s. Kim Roosevelt visited Burma after the Japanese had been expelled. In Egypt under Allen Dulles Kim Roosevelt supervised the CIA's operation to undermine the popular General Neguib and encourage the rise to power of Gamul Abdul Nasser. Even before his decisive victory Nasser was communicating through Roosevelt to make a settlement with Great Britain. These back-channel negotiations eventually produced the treaty signed in October 1954. Nasser ascended and for the next decade Egypt's relations with the West moved along a sometimes rocky road. By 1965 relations had significantly deteriorated and Nasser was quite worried the CIA was plotting to assassinate him. After the Odell-Amin case broke the CIA began to look for "more West friendly" Egyptian elements. Their attention landed on the Muslim Brotherhood which according to Talcott Seelye "We thought of Islam as a counterweight to communism. We saw it as a moderate force and a positive one." In fact the CIA was spending millions of dollars on anti-Nasser operations including an extensive propaganda campaign. Roosevelt was also the mastermind of the Central Intelligence Agency's Operation Ajax which orchestrated the coup against Iran's democratically-elected Mohammed Mossadegh administration which installed General Fazlollah Zahedi in power and and returned Mohammad Reza Pahlavi the Shah of Iran to Iran's Peacock Throne in August 1953 for the purpose of returning Western control of Middle Eastern oil supplies. In 1961 Kermit Roosevelt Jr. took his two older sons Kermit and Jonathan on a month long safari to Africa. Having studied AFRICAN GAME TRAILS T.R.'s famous account of that earlier safari in 1910 he and his sons set out to retrace its tracks. Aided by Life magazine these Roosevelts roughed it in safari camps much as Theodore Roosevelt and his son Kermit had fifty years earlier. Like his namesake Roosevelt was a great supporter of African wildlife conservation.; Signed by Author . Robert Hale hardcover

Franklin Delano Roosevelt
A 6 November 1928 telegram from future president Franklin D. Roosevelt to his essential aide confidante and de facto chief of staff Marguerite "Missy" LeHand on the night of the exceptionally close election that made him Governor of New York
New York 1928. Telegram. This striking piece of ephemera captures a pivotal moment of twentieth century political history and the singular working relationship between the man who would become Americas longest-serving president and the woman who would serve as his de facto chief of staff.

This is a 6 November 1928 telegram from Franklin Delano Roosevelt 1882-1945 to Marguerite Alice Missy Lehand 1894-1944. Print in six lines reads: DZ NEW YORK N Y 1011 PM NOV 6TH L829 MMISS sic M A LEHAND WARM SPRINGS GA. GOVE SMITH AND I BOTH RUNNING VERY CLOSE IN THE STATE FRANKLIN D ROOSEVELT. 9- 17 PM. The telegram is printed on 8 x 6.5 inch 20.3 x 16.5 cm WESTERN UNION TELEGRAM stationery. The dark purple type remains distinct if slightly variable in ink. The paper is inevitably toned but nearly complete with fractional closed tears along the left edge a tiny stain along the lower right edge a single horizontal crease and a single vertical crease. The telegram is protected within a clear removable archival sleeve.

On the night of 6 November 1928 when FDR sent this telegram the providential arc that made him Americas longest-serving president teetered on an electoral edge.

In 1921 FDRs promising political career was abruptly derailed by an illness that resulted in lifelong paralysis of his legs. When New York Governor Al Smith became the Democratic Partys presidential nominee in June 1928 Democrats had to choose a new candidate for governor of New York. It was not FDR. Death ill health and failure to attract broad support sidelined various candidates. A month before the November 1928 election the Democrats still lacked a candidate and that candidate was critical since Smith needed a strong gubernatorial contender to help him win the states electoral votes in the presidential race. Recruited by Smith a hesitant FDR agreed to run only just before he was formally nominated.

FDR and his campaign team spent the evening of 6 November at their Biltmore Hotel campaign headquarters. Lehand convalescing from an illness was at FDRs retreat in Warm Springs Georgia. Contrary to this upbeat telegram Smith was already losing and Roosevelt went home at about midnight without optimism. Only at about 4:00 AM on 7 December did it become clear FDR had won albeit with less than 50% of the votes cast and little over half a percent more than his opponent. Four eventful years later domestic economic crisis brought Roosevelt to the White House.

Lehand had already been with FDR for nearly a decade when she received this telegram. Missy so-called because one of the Roosevelt children had trouble pronouncing Miss was engaged by FDR at Eleanor Roosevelts suggestion initially handling his 1920 campaign schedule. Thereafter she spent all but her final impaired years as his essential aide and confidante calling him EffDee. A statistic speaks to how swiftly Lehand became essential to FDR. From 1925 to 1928 Roosevelt spent 116 of 208 weeks away from home trying to regain full use of his limbs. Eleanor was with him for four of those weeks
Missy LeHand for 110. Black Roosevelt p.158

FDRs as-yet unwarranted optimism in this telegram to Lehand makes sense in context. The illness that kept her in Warm Springs has been described by some as a nervous breakdown attributed by some to her concern that FDRs run for governor would interrupt his physical therapy and impede his recovery.

Though officially titled Personal Secretary LeHand was arguably the most influential figure during FDRs long presidency and as many have asserted his de facto Chief of Staff. She had her own bedroom in the executive mansion in Albany and in the White House serving FDR until she was incapacitated by a stroke in June 1941. When she died in July 1944 allegedly from further strokes precipitated by seeing FDRs haggard appearance in a cinema newsreel FDR publicly praised her for devoted service and being utterly selfless in her devotion to duty.

unknown

economic issues shall be kept to the forefront in the coming campaign."
A 29 June 1931 typed letter on gubernatorial stationery signed and marked "Personal" by then-New York State Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt to a future Democratic Congressman offering a snapshot of the diligent political work that helped FDR secure the Democratic nomination for president almost exactly one year after he signed this letter
Albany New York 1931. Letter. This 29 June 1931 typed letter is signed and marked Personal by then New York State Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt to a future Democratic congressman on his gubernatorial stationery. The letter offers a snapshot of the diligent work behind the seemingly providential arc that propelled FDR to the White House and eventually saw him become Americas longest-serving president.

The letter is addressed to a Mr. William Thom of Canton Ohio above whose name and address FDR wrote and underlined Personal. FDR thanks Thom for enclosing the clipping in regard to the vote of the Jackson Club of Canton. FDR tells Thom It is gratifying to learn that I have so many staunch friends in your Club and I appreciate the expression of confidence in which they voted recently. I am also delighted to see that the Club is determined that economic issues shall be kept to the forefront in the coming campaign. If we do not allow ourselves to be diverted and press home the fact that the present industrial depression is directly the result of the policies of the present administration I feel that victory will be assured. After the valediction FDR signed Franklin D. Roosevelt. Writing and emphasizing Personal was just the sort of deft touch that built a sense of camaraderie and loyalty. The exhortation economic issues shall be kept to the forefront in the coming campaign was just the sort of message discipline that winning candidates for office needed to command.

Condition of the letter is very good clean and complete though age-toned to the perimeter and with three horizontal folds ostensibly from original posting. The letter is housed in a clear removable archival mylar sleeve housed within a rigid crimson cloth folder.

The recipient William Richard Thom 1885-1960 was an Ohio lawyer and Democratic politician who would serve three non-consecutive stints in Congress. The same election that brought Roosevelt to the White House brought Thom to Congress where he was sworn in the same day FDR took the presidential oath of office. Thom served from 4 March 1933 3 January 1939. Thom lost his 1938 re-election bid returned to Congress for his final term in the same 1944 election that won FDR an unprecedented fourth term. Unlike FDR Thom lived out his final term serving 3 January 1945 to 3 January 1947.

A month before the November 1928 election the Democrats still lacked a candidate. Recruited by Smith a hesitant FDR agreed to run only just before he was formally nominated. He barely won with less than 50% of the votes cast and little over half a percent more than his opponent.

Yet four eventful years later national economic crisis brought FDR to the White House. FDRs governorship coincided with the onset of the Great Depression. More quickly than most other political leaders he concluded that the economy would not recover on its own and that there is a duty on the part of government to do something about this.

Roosevelt and his political team labored to accumulate pledges from Democratic Party delegates throughout the country. FDR secured the Democratic presidential nomination in Chicago almost exactly a year after he signed this letter. He appeared in person to accept the nomination the first Democratic candidate ever to do so. In his speech to the delegates he pledged a new deal for the American people. After they were both sworn in on 4 March 1933 FDR to the presidency Thom to the House of Representatives both men were in a position to support and implement New Deal policies.

Sources: ANB

unknown

Franklin D, And Buhite, Russell D (Volume Editor), And Levy, David W (Volume Editor) Roosevelt
FDR's Fireside Chats Oklahoma Western Biographies; 4
Looks like this book has never been read; pages are perfect; retired library book with the usual markings and light shelf wear on dust cover.

On thirty-one occasions during his presidency Franklin Delano Roosevelt went on the radio to talk things over with the people of the United States. Those fireside chats characterized by a disarming frankness and an informal and conversational tone represent an unprecedented presidential attempt to achieve intimacy with the nation. The American people listened gathered around their radios in living rooms and kitchens across the country as President Roosevelt discussed virtually every major problem facing the United States at home and abroad―including both the gravest domestic struggle since the Civil War and perhaps the most serious foreign crisis in the nation's history. In the fireside chats the president touched upon all of the issues surrounding the depression and the New Deal and upon the events fears and hopes that were part of the American experience of World War II.

Editors Russell D. Buhite and David W. Levy have gather the fireside chats tighter for the first time in a single volume and by careful attention to recordings and stenographic reports present the speeches exactly as Roosevelt spoke them. A general introduction discusses the importance of Roosevelt in American political history the rise of the radio as a political tool and the way Roosevelt aided by speech writers and advisers prepared and delivered the chat. Issues of the day are explored in two additional introductory essays―one describing the domestic situation Roosevelt confronted as he entered the White House in March 1933; the other surveying the international scene during the late 1930s when Hitler Mussolini and Japanese militarists propelled the world toward a catastrophic war.

To read the fireside chats a half century after they were delivered is to reenter a world of economic disaster social reform and international danger. It is also to hear once again the voice of one of the most skilled speakers and trusted leaders in American history.
University Of Oklahoma Press hardcover
